A very rough pub in the Welsh valleys

Dungeness. Famous for being the UK's only officially classified desert, it features a stark shingle landscape dotted with abandoned fishing boats, distinctive wooden houses, two lighthouses, and the imposing Dungeness nuclear power stations. I felt really depressed when I went there.

I was at Dungeness only yesterday , I love it , granted it looks desolate but it’s lovely and quiet and the beach is incredibly clean and there is free parking , a pub I’ve not been in but it looked quite busy and the cafe at the rail station ( mini steam railway) has very nice toilets .
For worst places I will say Chatham , it’s really grim , particularly the town centre .

Fort William. Depressing, bleak, creepy people who followed me, aggressive supermarket staff, plus someone shoved a dual carriageway between the town and loch so it’s a bit ugly

Definitely agree there. Fantastic places nearby and a useful base for exploring, but the town itself isn't nice at all.

Whitby, whole place stank of fish and chips all day long.
Full of dogs and their shit.
Exacerbated by staying in an hotel that made Fawlty Towers look good.

😂

Glenrothes; Kirkcaldy

30 minutes in the bus station almost drove me to suicide, but it was actually a turning point in my life because I realised that no matter what I did from that point forward, I was unlikely to ever be as down and depressed as folk who live there permanently must be. I'm not joking about this.

I really like Oban. It's a lot nicer than Fort William.

I was trying to decide wether the nice views redeemed Fort William enough for me to not give it a mention. It’s such a bleak, miserable little place but the. You look up and everything around it is gorgeous

Mine are Peterhead and a niche choice but Holytown

I hated Wimbledon Common, went about 15 yrs ago. Maybe it was associating it with Rachel Nickell .. I had to cut the visit short , just felt an awful foreboding.
Slough is just awful and always has been since I first went in the 70s as a kid. Hatfield
town centre the same.
Luton and Dunstable aren't pleasant but I go regularly for cheaper shopping as I live near so I don't hate them.
Always wanted to go to Bradford, finally went and hated it although seeing a man pull down his trousers and do a huge dump facing the traffic didn't help!

🤣 I’ve been to both of those and can’t say I noticed anything too bad. How do we feel about Ashbourne or Ripley?

It would be outing. It probably is ok if you don't stay where I stayed.

Oh god yes. Spent an afternoon there after missing the ferry, what an awful place. It was 40 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday 😐

The walk from Stranraer train station to the town centre is unnerving even in the middle of the day

Fraserburgh or Wick, with Middlesbrough in 3rd place.

I've been to Norilsk (look it up), and that wasn't as grim and foreboding as either Fraserburgh or Wick. Driving through Middlesbrough is like a combo of being on Safari and driving through a 3rd World warzone.

Oooh I’m fascinated with nickel mined freezing Norilsk can’t get over you have been there ! I’ve watched YouTube films about it

I grew up in rhyl. I now live near morecambe and just think it’s an english rhyl

I’m from Rhyl too! I have a soft spot for it, even though I recognise its many faults. I’ve not been to Morecambe.

Grimsby is probably my worst UK place.

oldmanandtheangel · Yesterday 23:26

Actually Chatham is probably the worst.
But I love Dungeness, one of my favourite places on earth, even tried to live there once but way too expensive

XDownwiththissortofthingX · Yesterday 23:26

In2mindsss · Yesterday 23:22

Why?!

The town centre itself is completely run down, almost to the point it looks abandoned, and it's also surrounded by horrible 60s flats and typical council houses that also look like they were thrown up then totally forgotten about.

The fishing harbour is quaint, and the outskirts are fine, the cliffs at Auchmithie are gorgeous, it's just the actual centre of town, such as it is, is a god-awful depressing dump.

CollieH9g · Yesterday 23:27

Birmingham. Rubbish everywhere, rats, a lot of security in the main shopping centre and disorderly behaviour.

TransportNerd · Yesterday 23:27

Happyhappyzoozoo · Yesterday 23:25

The walk from Stranraer train station to the town centre is unnerving even in the middle of the day

The problem there is that the station was built to serve the now long gone ferry terminal, so it's in a terrible location. There's talk of building a new station in a more convenient location, but it'll cost millions.

KnickerlessParsons · Yesterday 23:28

lowestoft.

The weird period in the early-mid 90s, pre Putin, pre massive criminal cartels, where Russia genuinely was accessible and you could do pretty much anything. I took the train across most of central Europe and the former Eastern Bloc, and thought screw it, why not continue all across Siberia.

Waitingfordoggo · Yesterday 23:28

In2mindsss · Yesterday 23:21

What! I thought it had undergone a massive makeover since the 2010s

I went to Sheffield recently and thought it was very nice! (The town centre at any rate, I didn’t explore the suburbs).
