I would like to know what people who post their "worst" places think the "best" places are. I have been to Salcombe, for example, its pretty but I also found it unpleasant because of the type of people and the overall upper middle class vibe. I would never say its bad but its not my kind of place at all. I love London, I love Northern cities in general - love the grittiness and the "real" vibe. Cutesy flowery village Cornwall type thing is not for me at all.

Totally. Give me Swanage over Lyme Regis anyday. But I grew up in a grittier town - I equate Lyme Regis to Chipping Camden, and my town to Swanage. Far more character and fewer poncy types. My MIL on the other hand would sooner die than set foot in a "real"place.

Bedford where I was dragged up and more recently wigan.
Absolute dumps.

I was born and grew up in Bedford, but that was in the 50s/60s,it was a lovely place then but its gone rapidly down hill in the last 30years..

Gillingham

ReallyReilly · Today 14:40

North Devon, bordering Cornwall. I found it depressing with a slightly menacing edge.

For me it was Hull. 😳
I could see the Humber Bridge but the one-way system stopped me getting to it for an hour. I lost count of the number of times I went around a statue of a man on a horse !
Never again !

You didn't think to stop and ask King Billy for directions? 😂

Kings Lynn.

I visited King's Lynn recently and found it quite charming. It's the home of Seahenge - who wouldn't be impressed? Minster also beautiful. Amazing history and some lovely historic buildings.

What's so bad about it to you that makes it the worst place in the UK?

It's not 'an absolute dump', though.

I think all the places on my list have probably already been mentioned!

Glenrothes
Blackpool
Great Yarmouth (although it was a long time ago I went)
Croydon
Portmeirion was disappointing and a bit creepy
Hastings

I think some of the worst places are the trendy, gentrified places - in London Peckham is the worst, it has always had a bad vibe and is dirty, but is now also expensive. Brixton and Shoreditch are nearly as bad.

On the coast, Margate is trendy with the Turner, the old town and Dreamland. Away from that bit, it's dirty and badly run-down. Cliftonville supposedly has trendy bars and cafes but you are more likely to see run down mini marts and cash only takeaway. It is the second most deprived area in the south, after Jaywick. Ramsgate is similar. A lot of the nicer bars and cafes on the coast are closed out of peak season.

My grandparents were in Pavenham back in the day when normal people could afford to live there from 1940 to 1960s and it was lovely but the grim concrete blocks had started to go up already in Bedford and even in the 80s it was reasonably ok but after that I left. The river was always nice.

Hastings old town is gorgeous though. I am aware that the outskirts are apparently rather shit with lots of deprivation, although I've never been. But the bit most visitors go to for a sunny day out is lovely. Very quirky, lots of lovely old buildings, loads of history, loads of atmosphere and some fantastic independent shops and restaurants.

Bradford

This. Went for a show recently and although The Alhambra is absolutely beautiful Bradford is an utter shit hole with a vibe that something awful is going to happen at any second.

javaprogrammer · Today 15:02

Glasgow, Middleborough, Bradford, Sheffield, Luton, Swindon, etc

cookbookjunkie · Today 15:02

I agree about Kings Lynn. It should be nice, it certainly has some lovely old architecture and is loaded with history but there is something foreboding and depressing about it and the people are rough. But I find that whole area where Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire converge is a bit weird in general.

Why is blackpool any worse than any other of the derelict seaside towns we have on these fair islands?
I mean we are awash with these kinds of places, I would have thought that at least Blackpool has some kind of personality or vibe that the ghost towns dont. Am surprised to see so many voices against it!

It’s a dump. Think shoddy B&Bs, tatty rooms, pubs with sticky carpets and so on.

DungareesTrombonesDinos · Today 15:07

Loch Ness! Gave me ginormous heebiejeebies I couldn't wait to leave. Its too big (I am aware how stupid I sound) and deep and creepy.

Menaced is how I felt in Plymouth bus station!

The Lido in Plymouth is lovely though

Yes, I got strongly recommended to visit Salcombe and couldn’t bear it. It’s such a shame. But that’s a cultural mismatch, isn’t it, rather than thinking somewhere is objectively bad, it’s just that it’s not a good fit.
I mean, it’s pretty and you can get decent food etc and I’m sure it’s doing well financially.

This is so true. I live in London, in a nice area, but the high street nearest me has really declined in past few years w vape shops, kebabs, barbers - the usual shite. There are some very wealthy residents so where do they shop - probably the more salubrious nearby areas - but even they are now declining a bit.

Edited

I think town/city centres in many places have suffered in recent years. Some very odd planning decisions, lack of funds & maintenance, and loss of high street shops etc.

Snazzy73 · Today 15:20

Manchester, Dundee, Glasgow, Liverpool, Margate, Grimsby, Hull and Middlesbrough. Also Harrogate I never got the appeal
