I'm not sure modern homes are built for hot weather, they are so very well insulated. Our draughty Victorian house has hardly any insulation so it's expensive to heat in winter, but is usually cool in summer if you keep on top of window/curtain opening throughout the the day.

Having admitted defeat on the pillow washing front due to conserving (my) energy I have decided to kill some moths! We had an outbreak last year and it was quite a saga. I threw loads of woolies out and others were washed, frozen, heated in the oven, you name it. I thought they'd gone but have spotted a few recently. One fluttered off when I picked up a favourite shawl and I was quite despairing. SO everything vulnerable is going into black bin bags and into the back of our estate car during the heatwave. Take that, moths!

Your right. My house is the same. 1930s home, north facing. Cool-ish in the summer and freezing in the winter. DD room is attic room so it's hell without air con.

Sorry about the moths. I had a battle a couple of years ago but in the utility room. Seen a couple the last few weeks.

I feel your pain. Last summer I had flying ants coming through the skirting boards of the dining room. I also have slugs coming into the living room but can't figure out where they are coming from. It's a constant battle.

MewithME · 21/06/2026 10:42

Progress update....have slaved after DS and he's had a minor meltdown over being asked to help.

In short....still a miserable bugger.

Operation cheer the up still in progress. Sigh.

Oh and gobshite neighbours are playing loud music and shouting at their kids who are shouting back so I will have to be in earbuds.

@MewithME Hope you can have a chilled day and yay 🎉 to no poop!

@Tiredandwired2 hope you can manage the local festival with DD and some rest time too.

@martha79 that sounds like a fabulous morning, so pleased you managed the pool, rest up now.

@TeaAndStrumpets sounds like DGD is having a blast on her holiday. Bet you can’t wait to see the pics. Oh I hear you, moths are such a pain! We had them one summer years ago and they were so hard to get rid of. They even got in the piano according to the piano tuner! We did eventually get rid and havent had a problem since but it took a while.

Talking of slugs, that reminds me a few days ago my dog got very giddy on her last wee of the night and wouldn't come back in Turned out to be 2 snails slowly moving up the side of the house, She kept running up to them to investigate, but then jumping back in fright when they moved 😂 it was rather a funny sight to watch!

Older house here too which isn't too bad really apart from the south facing rooms at the front and of course my bedroom is at the front. The back of the house is fairly cool though. My MILs modern house is insulated within an inch of its life and she always tells me how low her bills are compared to ours but it’s always too hot in there for me 🥵

TodayIsatrickyone · 21/06/2026 10:51

Oh heck @MewithME that does not sound like a chilled start to the day! Some days it’s okay to be a miserable bugger though!

Argg slugs how horrid! Do you have metal grilles/ airbricks? When we had mice in the attic DH realised part of the decorative airbrick cover had rusted away, allowing the mice in, then they were climbing up inside the cavity. He covered the rusty covers with perforated zinc and the problem was solved.
The little buggers had also got into a cupboard and chewed my Ecco fur lined boots so I had to throw them out. I was very upset mostly because they'd been an absolute BARGAIN at TK Maxx. They were actually a bit snug on me. I'm 4.5 and they only had size 4 so I'd crammed myself into them like an Ugly Sister....but they were a BARGAIN 😃

We have the odd woodlouse in the porch and some silverfish live under the bath in our downstairs bathroom...they panic when I put the light on at night! I reckon they were here before we were so I'm not too fussed.

bedfrog · 21/06/2026 11:19

Morning all. Beautiful day here. I wanted to have breakfast outside but someone down the road has workmen in their garden using a mini digger and a circular saw so it's noisy as all hell and also stinks of petrol. I would complain to the council (not allowed to make noise on a Sunday here) but I don't know what house number it is and THANKFULLY I am actually out this afternoon.

Had a good, medicated sleep last night as prep for today.

Hope everyone is well and has a nice day.

TeaAndStrumpets · 21/06/2026 11:27

@TodayIsatrickyone loved the slug story!

Yes we found moths under the piano when it was moved! Seemed OK inside. I doubt many people move their piano to hoover (guilty here) so it's a likely spot.

TeaAndStrumpets · 21/06/2026 11:30

@bedfrog another diy victim! There seems to be a lot of it about. I don't know how people manage to be so busy in this heat.

As soon as the sun is out here everyone starts mowing their lawns and making noise. I don't understand why they don't just want to chill out when it's hot!!
Maybe I've had ME for too long but it feels like other healthy people are accustomed to so much noise and activity. I'm convinced it can't be good for them Grin

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/06/2026 11:54

@martha79 I'm in sympathy with you. Stood on something which had blended in on dgd blanket, went down like a sack of spuds. Couldn't stop shaking for about an hour. Poor ds had to help me up. Think I've sprained my knee. Ruddy agony. Back on zimmer frame & moving so so slow.

Sounds like I've started a trend with the cooling units! Hope you find them useful.

MewithME · 21/06/2026 11:59

Oh @CoffeeBeansGalore so sorry. It's bound to shake you up. Be kind to yourself today. Xx

I'm hungry. Contemplating a healthy bit early lunch. DS out with his Dad for father's Day so I can eat something without having to do two meals for a change.

Might just have olives, bread and cheese.

In fact, I may just live on bread and cheese this week! Shame DS needs feeding too. God knows what he'll eat in the heat. Autism and restricted food combined with not wanting to put the over or grill on is always tricky.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/06/2026 12:24

@MewithME Thank you. Intend doing very little. Ds is home today so will be roped in to do a few basic necessities.

JewelleryCat · 21/06/2026 12:42

Just rest as much as you can @CoffeeBeansGalore. It’s either hot or cold which is good for sprains and I can’t remember which. Do you have a knee brace which could help?

I do have a metal air vent but it all looks fine and they are coming from the other side of the room. Don't see any in the winter. Only the summer. I will keep investigating.

😂 about the boots and the things we do for a bargain! Mice must have been a nightmare

martha79 · 21/06/2026 13:33

Ouch @CoffeeBeansGalore I hope it eases off soon. I'm just a bit bruised and scraped I think - ice packs are coming in handy for this as well as general cooling-down.

I've just had the deepest sleep for about two hours. Woke up hungry so glad I brought some snacks upstairs. I'm also planning not to cook for the next week if I can avoid it.

I think this house is Victorian but with modern doors and double glazing, and it's quite hard to get a breeze through. The living room stays fairly cool but the kitchen gets the sun lats afternoon/ evening and it's unbearable sometimes. Upstairs gets really stuffy too. The only thing putting me off the water air coolers is that the humidity is already pretty high in here. The piano (currently moth free, I think) doesn't like it and I'm not a big fan either!

danglethedingle · 21/06/2026 14:10

Its lovely here, sunny with a slight breeze. I've got washing on the line, and we just had a really nice pork chop traybake thing. I feel a bit more human for achieving something and having a proper dinner. Not quite a roast, but near enough.

Wishing everyone a happy Sunday.

BlackeyedSusan · 21/06/2026 14:37

Signing back in. I'm too bloody tired to come here often!

Dreading next week. I'm one of those with a condition that is more at risk in the heat. Plus redhead and pale. Flat gets very hot. (SW facing) Won't get below 28c for a week or so.

Sorry about the critters. It's grim. Been there, done that, still got a few. Physically unable to do much about it right now.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 21/06/2026 14:47

Thank you ladies. The support is appreciated 😘.

@JewelleryCat yes currently wearing a knee support. Can't use cold compress as my knees collapse if they get cold. Honestly I'm useless.
Will do as little as possible for the next few days. Ds & Dh will just have to get on with it. Dh does most of the cooking anyway. I usually do the coffees (bean to cup machine so freshly ground each time - love my coffee 😊). Again, Dh will have to do them for a few days. We currently use Grumpy Mule beans. Quite apt for him atm 😁. i've succumbed to cocodamol. I rarely use pain relief so they knock me for 6 when I do take them. I'll be much better by the end of the week.

Tiredandwired2 · 21/06/2026 14:52

Well I managed the festival. DS spent his time on his phone with headphones on which is normal for him.

DD got anxious as soon as we got there and was drained straight away. I sat there is silence people watching for a bit and wishing I was home.

Queued up for brownies for the kids. Ordered two. Lady asked if I wanted same or separate bags. I said separate. Walked off with one bag, having forgot the other 🙈 Oh and the brownies were happy hippo brownies and DD informed me I asked for hungry hippos 😂

Then seen someone I knew on the way out and struggled to put a sentence together. I am done now.

Sorry for the self centered moan.

@BlackeyedSusan nice to see you! I hope you have fans to keep you cool next week

Oh how miserable! Last year I went full length tripping over a phone charger wire and bruised face, wrists and knee. I was in shock for a while, and quite tearful because the house was empty and I panicked. It's a horrible feeling. Managed to get myself up after a while but felt so wobbly...the knee definitely hurt the most.
Is it worth getting some arnica cream?

One thing it did do was make me do a risk assessment on my environment. So I've tidied up cables etc, and got some better slippers. The ones I was wearing were mule style so the cable sort of lassooed them. I was then accident free until I spilled hot soup on my feet 😊

Hope you feel better soon.
