He won't want Lowe to 'win' though.

DM has started the drip drip stories with an 'innocent' question about Burnham's wife.

Why ? Did she accept £5,000,000 from an ex-pat to stand for parliament ?

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2026 14:48

Is it because she was on Blind Date??

Anyone else feel it's a bit unfair of Starmer and Burnham to be allowed to get away with this blatant stitch up to hide all of this serious politicking in midst of the World Cup and then be forgotten by the end of the Silly Season ?

If they had run the country as effectively as they ran this coronation, then there would be no need for Starmer to go.

(I'll leave that post there for balance, in case we are plopped upon).

You can add me to that list! I don't like what he's done one bit and think he has put his ego first as @LittleBowSheep says.

And me I’m extremely pissed off but I am left of Corbyn.

She's Dutch and was on Blind Date according to the DM Grin

There's other stuff from ages ago about various conflicts of interest wrt the Manchester CAZ and some building developments published elsewhere

I'd love Burnham to reply to that saying that, actually, he's done just fine on those two issues but thank you for your kind concern.

MaybeNotBob · 21/06/2026 15:54

I saw a rumour earlier that Farage is stepping down as an MP tomorrow.

I didn't realise he'd ever actually stepped up as an MP...

Of course, Burnham would come to office with the first 2 years of Labours work under the belt. The bits that the press kindly kept secret.

There is a world in which Burnham takes power just as those measures start to deliver.

I think in time, with a bit of distance, some of the hate for Starmer will die down and he'll probably be regarded as a flawed but reasonably decent person. He isn't Liz Truss or Boris Johnson. But he did (among the good things Labour kept hidden for some reason) mess up in some key areas.
If the good things Labour did start to bear fruit then that's a good thing. I don't see it as Burnham unfairly "winning" something that he doesn't deserve of that happens. More than if it's good for the UK it good for the UK.

It would be so good if he did. I know he won't/can't but it would be hilarious if he just let rip.

Bottom line is while Starmer was the best Labour could offer, he wasn't PM material. Neither were Truss, Sunak, May or Johnson.

Painful as it is to say, my view is the last "PM" we had was Cameron. Right upo until he wasn't when he cravenly capitulated to "the Bastards" in the same way that John Major (how we miss him !!!) didn't.

Before that I never felt Gordon Brown was PM material.

And sickeningly Blair was. Again right up until he wasn't.

Was Callaghan PM material compared to Wilson ?

I can't really speak any further back ... but I recall DPs were not massive Heath fans.

Is my personal view.

Piggywaspushed · 21/06/2026 16:42

As Thatcher would say, looks like Farage is 'frit'.

TemperanceWest · 21/06/2026 17:48

I saw this comment and agree:

Neil Coyle posted: “My members are livid about the prospect of an utter stitch-up & the media circus being rewarded.

“When the next leader cannot change Trump, Iran, Ukraine, Putin, Musk, broadcast editorial & algorithm bias overnight they’ll bay for his blood too. Better keep that guillotine sharp.”

(Eta: I had to Google Coyle as I could not remember anything about him. He is an arse, but I still agree with him!)

Edited

Which is perfectly correct.

However I really can't see a way out for Starmer. He did rather leave the gun cabinet unlocked (so to speak) by appointing Mandelson. It's hardly like the whole country wasn't warning him anyway. And all of that eventually landed on top of all the other tread-on-rake moments that will sadly define 2024-2026.

Isn't there a saying "Damn the torpedoes" ?

There really weren’t many errors. Fewer policy u turns than most governments. And the whole country wasn’t warning him. Many - including the leaders of other parties - thought it was a good appointment due to his connections to Trump’s circle.
For me, his failure is not being radical enough.

Zonder · 21/06/2026 21:43

"Bottom line is while Starmer was the best Labour could offer, he wasn't PM material."

I can't agree with this. I agree with @cardibach that his failure was not being radical enough and worrying more about reform than anyone else. He is more of a statesman than we have seen in charge for a long time. Just made some dumb not very labour decisions.
