"I read somewhere once that there can be anti Northern bias in people's thoughts. They still find it harder to imagine Northerners in seats of power than those form the south. Essentially because Northerners by southerners are always perceived as working class and less well educated."

You said exactly what I was thinking. You still see a distaste for" flat Northern vowels" that you would have expected to die with the 70's.

This is so true. I left the north 40 years ago and have lived in a couple of other countries and then in the south for decades. I cling to my northern vowels for dear life as a mini act of rebellion against the attitudes of southerners to them.

Another one agreeing with @DuncinToffee about labour and AB.

Raven08 · 20/06/2026 09:06

It'll be "interesting"* to see how this plays out

  • like it was watching the tory party eat it own tail

The right wing msm will have a field day, which will help deform/restore.

AB will discover its harder having the main job than heckling from the sidelines.

I can only hope he banishes WS and DL to the back benches where they will no doubt start plotting their own coronation

I have very little respect for AB after these shenanigans. I suspect many will feel the same.

No doubt there will be the obligatory jogging pap over the weekend 🙄

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2026 09:14

As long as he ditches those running shorts 😬

As I said, I agree on the shenanigans.

I was talking to some Labour party members last night. They were all firmly behind Burnham.

Indeed. Does he imagine the press will give him an easy ride?

placemats · 20/06/2026 09:27

Since when has Burnham been given an easy ride by the press?

He's not Badenoch or Farage.

I didn't say he has had an easy ride from the press. But he also hasn't faced the intense, insane press scrutiny that comes with being in No.10. Starmer wasn't given an easy ride before he became PM, but it became much worse once he became PM.

Efacsen · 20/06/2026 10:02

Think I saw that he already has new longer shorts @DuncinToffee

TemperanceWest · 20/06/2026 10:14

The shorts thing passed me by so I googled. 😳Very glad to hear he has bought longer ones!

Piggywaspushed · 20/06/2026 10:24

I think when one ahs read the parliamentary report into bullying in the labour party and the treatment of Diane Abbott , one realises that Keir Starmer is just as capable of 'tactics' and positioning and conniving as the rest of them.

I think seeing Burnham as a backstabber and Keir as some kind of wounded pure soul is probably naive.

I'm the rare find on MN of a Corbynite - Starmer did an awful lot of politicking to remove him (many people say rightly so : notwithstanding , tactics were deployed). Perhaps no one cares much about that because 'But Corbyn'.

Have I missed something about David Lammy?

Agree 💯

Starmer is using the words 'chaos' and 'divisive' to try and stop Burnham launching a leadership challenge. And this is one of the failures of Starmer - a negative response isn't the defence of a strong and capable leader. (That also applies to Badenoch, Farage and Davey.)

Raven08 · 20/06/2026 10:56

Call me a cynic 😃
But maybe the feeling that AB has had an "easy ride" in the msm is because they want to cause maximum disruption in the govt/party?
Or maybe I'm overthinking it!

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2026 10:57

The media does like a bit of drama, I don't think you are overthinking it.

Burnham was the shadow Home Secretary for a year when Corbyn was leader of the opposition. He resigned to focus on the Mayoral election in Greater Manchester and not because of any differences with Corbyn.

I voted Burnham for leader. Still campaigned for Labour under Corbyn, despite him being a lightweight.

I think he and his supporters have convinced themselves the press have only reported on Starmer, not driven opinion. They think Starmer is genuinely unlikeable and unable to lead, against all evidence to the contrary. They’re about to find out how wrong that view is. As I’ve said before, Burnham presents a much bigger target. The press will start the second he wins any leadership battle. And he’s not great at handling criticism.

I supported Corbyn too. Of course Starmer has used tactics and politics - that’s the job. But the point is he’s done nothing to deserve the rather visceral hatred the press has whipped up. And Burnham is about to experience the same treatment.

BIWI · 20/06/2026 11:24

He's made a few missteps, and mistakes along the way - but I totally agree with you on this point. And you only have to read The Other Thread to see how entrenched is the hatred for him amongst 'ordinary' folk.

There is a world in which "easy ride" means actually getting shit done.

I mean what have Farage and Co actually done to earn their coverage ? Reduced waiting lists. Improved buses. Tackled child poverty ? I know they are very keen on dealing with the terrible numbers of cases of VAWG - but only by increasing them.

And I am not sure what it says about the state of UK political coverage, but right here, right now, as a result of (obviously carefully targeted) YouClips I know far more about Mayor Mamdani's successes in NYC than all the UK Labour Government successes.

Llttledrummergirls · 20/06/2026 11:28

The other threads reminds me of the reform ones- a few loud voices being listened to by the media who amplify it, whilst the many quiet voices go unheard.

That translated in the more important elections (arguing over potholes is preferable to having them arguing over defence) and I suspect the same is true of Starmer.

You are the reincarnation of Richard Nixon, and I claim my five pounds.

Yes, almost certainly. I think he might handle it better. But time will tell.
