I think he will @dapsnotplimsolls and I'm sure he will get thrashed. With any luck.

And if he doesn't get enough backers, that will be humiliating for him too. Win win!

Good point!

Are they suggesting reform voters voted tactically for AB @PickAChew ? I can't imagine that happening!

At the top of the BBC feed, @Zonder - them being poor losers is going to be quite the sideshow.

TemperanceWest · 19/06/2026 07:37

Richard Tice says he was told by supporters in Makerfield: "I'm so determined to get Starmer out, I'm going to vote Burnham to ensure that result."

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:40

That's just so funny! As if!

cardibach · 19/06/2026 07:43

I can’t see Burnham as any sort of solution. I hoped for some radical policies at least in year 2 of government because of the large majority and it hasn’t happened. What has happened has been steady work on delivering the manifesto. Burnham has no ideas that aren’t already on operation and his more radical views have been publicly disavowed during the campaign (not that he was ever radical or particularly left wing). It’s all about ego I’m afraid. He’s done none of the work to get into government - he turned his back after the big defeats - and now thinks he can ride on on a white charger. I’m afraid he’s nobody’s knight in shining armour. I despair. Might be the push I need to join Plaid though.

TheABC · 19/06/2026 07:44

Good morning everyone.

We really don't need a leadership election right now (but it looks like we are getting one). Aside from the infighting, corruption and outright incompetence, one of the things that killed the Conservatives was the revolving ministry door. There was no point in the civil servants carrying out long term orders when they knew the minister would change again in 18 months and they would have to start again. If I were going to work at one of the departments this morning, I would be questioning the shelf life of my current projects.

We need stability.

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:48

I totally agree TheABC

BIossomtoes · 19/06/2026 07:51

"Reform supporters voted 'tactically' to 'get Starmer out', says Richard Tice"

Yes and there are fairies at the bottom of our garden.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2026 07:54

Presumably Tice will complain about family voting next? Or women voting against misogyny?

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2026 08:00

How is it closer to what people voted for? Starmer made the party electable and led on the manifesto, which is being delivered. Thats what people voted for.

In these days of soundbite politics you need charisma and a media personality to get the successes out there. I don't agree with it, but I can see it's necessary. If Burnham can do that it will help more people see that Labour are the party for them. Starmer is a thoroughly decent man, ironically perhaps a little too decent for today,'s flavour of politics, but as Labour leader his public persona has been too easily manipulated into seeming arrogant and put of touch. I also think Reeves is a terrible Chancellor and Phillipson a dreadful Ed Sec.
My ideal Labour leader would always be Yvette Cooper but she doesn't want it now and I don't blame her.

Persephonia1966 · 19/06/2026 08:06

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:08

@Notonthestairs the press would have a field day if there was no contest. He would forever be labelled as having no mandate.

Once again I blame the MSM for this whole mess. I like AB and think he would make a good PM but if the MSM weren't so right wing there wouldn't have been such a huge negative spin on absolutely everything KS and this government have done. Total blind spot about any of the positives leave KS looking ineffective.

It's not just the MSM
I can remember hearing very early on after Labour were elected a journalist expressing suprise that a Labour party member said something along the lines of not trying to form a narrative because the public want substance not style/want politicians to get on and so the job ... That's probably true but being able to make a cohesive narrative really matters as well and Labour were bad at coms straight out of the gate. Even when they tried to turn it around every "good" thing they might want to announce got overshadowed by drama, often whipped up by their opponents. Not helped by media hostility but also they just weren't very good. I am sure you could list 5 good things Labour dlhas done because you are very involved. But I bet the average person on the street can't.

Substance matters. But you need to be able to communicate as well. So either Starmer needs to turn it around or someone else does. I like Starmer I don't think he is as bad as some say but he did really struggle with the communicating. I also have no idea why he or anyone else would want to be PM.

TemperanceWest · 19/06/2026 08:13

The Mumsnet anti-Labour lot are spinning the Tice line now. It is very funny.

It's better than blaming family voting

But I am so so happy that he got more than Reform and Restore together. It means they can't use the "split vote" excuse. There is no "silent majority" in their favour. At least not one that votes. And it was a seat made for Reform to steal and they didn't.

cardibach · 19/06/2026 08:20

I just despair of the whole thing. 5 things @Persephonia1966? I’d struggle to pick 5 out of a massive list. There are loads but they aren’t reported at all, or if they are it’s with a negative spin. I do t see that any comms team could stop that. I agree there needs to be a stronger ‘story’ attached to appeal but even that wouldn’t counteract the most vicious and negative press I can ever recall. And the same will happen to Burnham.
The media and its rich owners are going to get what they want and we are all screwed. Wish I was young enough to leave really. So depressing.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2026 08:21

Very very amused to see Telegraph have framed this as Reform beating Restore.
They have to cling to something and thats the only good story to tell.

Yes, but via a Reform win I suppose.

The Telegraph and the DM have been running stories against Restore for the last week to boost the Reform vote.

Pleased that Count Binface polled well enough not to ve listed as "others" even if he did lose his depisit 😁

I know. Nothing to do with turnout being 20% higher than in the locals. Apparently it’s all Reform voters lending Burnham their vote to get rid of Starmer. Utterly delusional.

Llttledrummergirls · 19/06/2026 08:33

I don't believe the Tice statement for a minute, but, assuming it's true, isn't it a damning indication for them that they are picking up dissatisfied voters who are not wedded to them or their ethos and have been using them as a protest vote.

Other than the few hardcover "patriots" they have no actual support.

I don't want a leadership battle or a change of leader. One of my reasons for voting labour was stability, and they are fucking that up. I won't be voting for them next time with a change of leader unless something extraordinary happens. I certainly don't want Burnham or Streeting in charge, both are self serving and want the top job for the wrong reasons, just like the last load of tories.

Labour need to get their shit together and show some loyalty to country, before their own self ambitions. Division is bad for the country and they fell for it. I don't want someone that stupid in the top job.
