I do love petunias, @dontcallmelen even if the sap does smell of fish!

Raven08 · 18/06/2026 21:10

Lovely Petunias!
My roses have gone mad...
So many blooms, they are gorgeous

Even if AB wins the by election, he may find it's not quite what he expected (a crowning as a PM in waiting.. )
It seems like the right wing vote will be split, which may well give him the victory, but he will not have much support locally and many labour voters (like me) are pretty pissed at him planning to challenge KS and cosplaying being a "regular guy".
I'd also feel fairly annoyed if I'd voted for him as mayor.
Nothing like a bit of blind ambition, eh?

This is where he might find out that he should have heeded the advice to ‘be careful what you wish for’.

Raven08 · 18/06/2026 22:36

@LizzieW1969
Absolutely

LittleBowSheep · 19/06/2026 03:12

The results are in: Burnham has won Makerfield. I have very mixed feelings about it. I'm obviously very happy that Reform failed again, but I'm really not impressed with what Burnham has done and what he is about to do.

Andy Burnham wins Makerfield by-election, paving way for him to challenge Keir Starmer as Labour leader

The Greater Manchester mayor has previously said he would seek to enter a Labour leadership contest, if one was triggered.

Raven08 · 19/06/2026 03:12

AB wins
Restore didn't do very well
He has a majority, but a depressing number voted deform

Raven08 · 19/06/2026 03:13

@LittleBowSheep
Look at his smug fecking face 😡

TemperanceWest · 19/06/2026 04:02

The Reform and Restore vote together was a good bit less than Burnham's, which is a hopeful sign. But agree with you @LittleBowSheep

@Raven08 the look of a man who thinks he going to be PM soon. He probably is, but still. I wonder if he is ready for the shit that will be thrown at him?

Piggywaspushed · 19/06/2026 05:22

Is it not just possible that Burnham loves the Labour party and wants to save it from doom? Starmer is leading it to the iceberg. 9000 is a far bigger majority than was predicted.

I like Burnham and I think the public generally do and will. I know we all got bored with 'charisma' politics with Boris but I am afraid Starmer has shown that politicians do need to be able to sell. I hope Burnham also doesn't now lurch to the right. This by election ahs shown he may not need to.

Interesting times ahead.

I am an 'anyone but Streeting' person.

placemats · 19/06/2026 05:35

That's a fantastic result for Andy Burnham, proving every poll wrong. It's good on many levels, not least that neither Reform or Restore came close.

It's expected that Starmer will hand over the reins with little disruption.

I agree. AB will need a fantastic Cabinet and a Campbell-level PR machine, but it’s a step closer to the Labour people actually voted for in the GE. My Labour MP works incredibly hard for every part of her constituency (not just the wealthy rural bits like her Conservative predecessor) and those like her deserve a leadership that backs that up and celebrates it.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2026 06:56

Agree with Piggy.

Controversially I don’t think there should be a leadership contest. A handover and get on with it.

Unfortunately after the Tories umpteen leadership contests I’m sick of them - they turn parties inwards. All I remember from Truss/Sunak & Cleverly/Jenrick/Badenoch was a lot of backslapping and navel gazing. Very little action.

I recognise this is harsh on Labour - essentially the Tories wrecked it for everyone else (as per).

Bet Vorderman’s enjoying her morning coffee.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2026 07:00

Realise I’d forgotten the May/Leadsom & Johnson/Hunt leadership elections somewhere along the line.

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:08

@Notonthestairs the press would have a field day if there was no contest. He would forever be labelled as having no mandate.

Once again I blame the MSM for this whole mess. I like AB and think he would make a good PM but if the MSM weren't so right wing there wouldn't have been such a huge negative spin on absolutely everything KS and this government have done. Total blind spot about any of the positives leave KS looking ineffective.

TemperanceWest · 19/06/2026 07:12

@Notonthestairs yes, I bet Vorderman is enjoying her coffee!

I hope Burnham can turn things around, but I will never like what he did.

I wonder if Streeting was secretly hoping Reform would win? I hope Burnham doesn't give him a job.

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:14

Streeting is a snake. I hope he fades away into obscurity.

BIossomtoes · 19/06/2026 07:20

I agree with Piggy too. I’m delighted that Reform were trounced so spectacularly and Burnham’s victory was so decisive. A leadership contest is essential, whoever succeeds Starmer has no authority without one.

dapsnotplimsolls · 19/06/2026 07:26

Do we think Streeting will stand?

Mixed feelings here, too.

"Reform supporters voted 'tactically' to 'get Starmer out', says Richard Tice"

Yeah, yeah. You keep telling yourself that, love.

I'm sure Kemi will declare the election result a resounding success for the Tories.

I don’t like a Burnham. He was not great in government as a cabinet minister. He’s been a good mayor, but I don’t think he’s suited to national politics in the same way - and certainly he doesn’t have what it takes to be PM. He’s changed his stance on loads of issues during this campaign and there is nothing in his ‘plan’ which isn’t already happening. He’s very easy for the media to attack and he’s too touchy to handle it I reckon.
he voted for the Iraq war. Starmer campaigned against it. Not all I need to know, but very telling all the same.

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:28

I think he will @dapsnotplimsolls and I'm sure he will get thrashed. With any luck.

How is it closer to what people voted for? Starmer made the party electable and led on the manifesto, which is being delivered. Thats what people voted for.

He will if he has enough backers, I reckon. He is deluded enough.

Eta: agree on daps.

Zonder · 19/06/2026 07:29

Are they suggesting reform voters voted tactically for AB @PickAChew ? I can't imagine that happening!
