How is Ariana Grande allowed to keep going?

She looks like she’s at death’s door with anorexia and yet she’s just kicked off a world tour.

I thought we were living in more enlightened times now and that celebrities’ ill health wouldn’t be enabled like this. If she went to any hospital she’d get admitted for malnutrition.

It’s another Karen Carpenter situation (except Karen was significantly more talented).

Bit unnecessary, given the nature of this thread.

Also, Arianna has a lovely singing voice, even if her kind of music isn't to your taste.

Anorexia is such a horrid disease - it really is a nightmare for people living with it and supporting those with it. The bit that is more concerning to me is the ‘high’
that some anorexics seem to get from the attention and the intense exercise she’ll be doing. Realistically she’s going to be at risk of losing weight during a tour unless she’s eating a lot (which she won’t). Now I suspect she probably is eating something otherwise she’d struggle with the dancing but it won’t be sustaining or anything that will build resilience. The problem she’ll have is that if she gets ill or injured, she’s just not got the reserves to recover easily.

One of my relatives managed to last into her late 60s by some miracle after a lifetime of anorexia- don’t think she ever weighed more than 6 stone. She always thought she could control it to avoid the worst outcomes- would start eating a bit more if her weight was in the territory of admission etc. that was fine until she took things a bit too far and her body just had enough and she died from an infection. The worst thing is she knew as she was dying she’d done it to herself and regretted it. The whole thing was just very sad

I don't want to discuss people who are overweight, I am pointing out the double standards and not being ok with online trolling bullying someone because they don't agree on the way she looks.

She’s a really bad role model for young girls.
so we can say that, but we can't say someone overweight is a really bad role model?

Literally nobody is nipping down to Sainsbury's and buying extra jam doughnuts to try to achieve the same body as their obese pop idol. That's the difference. People know that if they want to look like AG, or another very underweight celebrity, they have to restrict their calorie intake to extreme levels.

I know 4 women who are 5 ft 8 and 5 ft 9, and they are 10 stone 10 - to 12 stone 2. They look great. They are healthy and fit and look great in their clothes. (They are around size 10 to 12.) If they were 9 stone, they would look like they needed to be in hospital. I don't care what 'the official weight charts' say, being 9 stone at 5 ft 8 to 5 ft 9 is not a healthy weight. It's too low.

.

Edited

5'8" and 9 stone is a BMI of 19.2 - a perfectly healthy weight.
I am evidence of that, and while certainly slim, it absolutely is not too low and if I presented myself at hospital as such I'd be laughed out of the room.

A fat celebrity is a bad example too.

OK, that's true. But that's not the case here. We are talking about a different situation

sunshinestar1986 · Yesterday 23:23

JollyGreenWatermelon · Yesterday 19:36

how rude.
It's fine for people to be very overweight though?

I agree that if there are concerns about her weight, someone should help her.
Until we can equally stop people who look too overweight to do thing, it's not ok to pass judgements on people who are "too slim".

Double standards are ridiculous.

I always find this kind of response defensive and strange.
A person who's severely underweight and has anorexia is at high and immediate risk of dying.
Being overweight is hardly gunna kill you.
Now severe and morbid obesity together with many health conditions can increase the risk of dying immediately.
This level of obesity is probably at least 25 or 30 stones and above and by this point most will probably have type 2 diabetes, joint issues, maybe high blood pressure, maybe even heart issues
Not many people ever get to that point.

The average size in the UK is a size 16 and that is considered overweight for most people, yet at size 16 most people are completely healthy .
I use to climb mountains at that size which was a bmi 30 for me and I had zero health problems 😉

Lougle · Yesterday 23:28

HoraceCope · Yesterday 21:10

i have to disagree
she looks slim but not anorexic imo

Are you serious? I am 'slim'. 5'8" with a BMI of 19.4. I could technically lose another 3kg and still scrape into the healthy weight range, but I think I would look thin then. Ariana Grande looks thinner than my DD who was hospitalised at 164cm and 37kg. On that basis, I'd be amazed if Ariana weighs more than 30kg.

Tickingcrocodile · Yesterday 23:31

These pictures are so sad to see. My DD has been a huge Ariana Grande fan for years. She has tickets to see her tour in London this summer. She is also in recovery from an eating disorder and I don't know if it's a good idea for her to go and see her "idol" like this.

To be honest, even when DD was at her most unwell she still didn't look quite as emaciated as Ariana does, but she wasn't allowed to do a single thing until she had gained weight. She was on bed and sofa rest for three months. A global tour must use a huge amount of energy and take such a physical toll. Her body really doesn't look like it can cope with that.

Poodledoodley · Yesterday 23:37

It’s so sad. She was beautiful before.

this is a typical mumsnet response when it
cones to weight. This can be an unhealthy place shen it comes to weight.
Ive seen threads where women have said they’re 7 stones and 5ft 4 and feel chubby, with replies agreeing that you can be chubby at this height/weight. Appalling.

As someone who's recovered from anorexia I agree.
There is so much pro ana on MN.
Any time someone shows a very thin model , posters are queuing up to say they look just like that and are naturally a size 4 and very healthy...

CheerfulYank · Yesterday 19:22

Given that only a few years ago she looked like this, it is shocking. But I don’t know what can actually be done about it unless they involuntarily commit her, and that’s unlikely due to the amount of money being thrown around.

This is how I remember her. The current photos shock me. She needs to be helped or she will die, the poor woman. Against her will if necessary. Soon, no one will be able to make money out of her.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · Yesterday 23:43

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 18:31

Who should forbit her to go on?

Her manager.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · Yesterday 23:44

fartotheleftside · Yesterday 18:43

Family. Management. Record company. Her doctors. Friends. Even the bloody insurance company for this tour should have a vested interest in making sure she’s healthy.

basically anyone with a personal connection to her or who is currently making money off her.

she looks like she’s at the level of needing an involuntary hold for anorexia to me.

Totally agree op.

JLou08 · Yesterday 23:45

Taking away someone's control over their own life is very risky with Anorexia. Her being forced out of performing could do her more harm than good.

ItstoolateformeDaveyourselves · Yesterday 23:46

Greenwitchart · Yesterday 20:24

I am with you OP.

It is staggering that her family and management are not getting together to encourage her to tale a break and get the help she obviously needs.

Her health is more important than making more money.

The stress of doing a tour will be too much on her body and mind.

The photos are stark. She clearly needs a break and some recovery.

Not me, but I have known anorexia and it's impact.

I hope someone is looking after her.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 23:46

Genuinely, how do people this thin still appear like they have enough energy to go on tours, run marathons, do a full days work etc? When I miss a meal or two, or three, I get a faint feeling and feel like a wobbly jelly.

Charlize43 · Yesterday 23:48

I could go on... I could go on and do her world tour for her.

I sing a little or at least can carry a tune...

If this is what everyone wants, I'll do it!

Snippit · Yesterday 23:53

Glowingup · Yesterday 18:46

Really sad. Like Karen Carpenter and Nikki Grahame.

Do you remember Lena Zaveroni from years back, she was anorexic bless her, so sad. At one stage she weighed just 4 stones, she also had PTSD, she died at the age of 35. Too much is expected of child stars as they grow up.

Cleaningismycardio · Today 00:15

I took my daughter to Madame Tussauds a couple of years ago and she was so excited to get her photo with the Arianna Grande waxwork. My child was 10, healthy, sporty, pre-pubescent...and was bigger than the waxwork. Presumably, Arianna Grande is smaller now than she was when that waxwork was created - extremely scary and I think she must be so ill to be so small. Jannette McCurdy (her Sam and Cat co-star) has a really interesting memoir detailing her own experiences of being controlled and managed to look a certain way to succeed in the industry. A previous poster mentioned Judy Garland and the experiences of both these women show how little has changed since the so-called 'golden age' of Hollywood.

Bonjovispjs · Today 00:23

I don't really know her music much, but she looks so healthy in the Popular Song video with Mika, she was 19 then I think. Even though she was younger, It doesn't even look remotely like the same person, so sad 😞

MJFEB2026 · Today 00:38

She looks terribly thin 😔

Okiedokie123 · Today 00:57

TeaForTwoPlusDog · Yesterday 22:09

Oh for goodness sake, we don’t know her, we are not directly addressing her and people know who we mean if we call her Kate Middleton.

I don’t know you either CoffeeforThreeplusCat.
I can’t help but find it odd that the media and quite a lot of people refer to her as that whilst eg Diana is always referred to as Princess Diana, Princess Di, Lady Di. Only ever Diana Spencer if in the context of her pre marriage.
Just seems weird to me. 🤷‍♀️

Whoops75 · Today 01:41

I wouldn’t bring my daughter to see her.
