Belfast attack

Greenwitchart · 09/06/2026 17:51

I can see that the previous thread on the topic is full so I am starting a new one to continue the discussion.

The points I wanted to say as someone who immigrated to the UK over 30 years ago:

  • This is a horrific attack and everyone's thoughts should be with the victim and his loved one.
  • However, I do think that we have an issue with some people getting into the country whether legally or illegally who simply don't have the same values as the majority of the population and are not able to follow its laws and customs.
  • The asylum and immigration system needs a serious overall and to do more to stop men who are a potential danger to society because of their beliefs/culture/failure to integrate getting through the system and ending up committing violent acts. Some people destroy their documents and checks can only go so far when it is hard to verify claims and the chaotic countries they come from does not have reliable records that can be accessed . There are many peaceful and genuine asylum seekers who just want a safe place to live in peace but we seem to be getting in too many angry, violent men who abuse the system and that has to stop.
  • I don't want to share the streets with people who have no respect for women and girls, are religious fanatics to the point of extremism or show hate towards gay people and bring violence in general.
  • Having people from different cultures coming in is fine as long as they integrate well and take on the values of the country they live in. It does not work if they just live parallel lives and fail to follow the law of the land.

Which recent tragedies?

If it includes Henry Nowak, it sort of destroys the argument given that Digwa is a British citizen.

Actually, that's an interesting point. Both Nowak and Digwa were from immigrant families.
One integrated, the other didn't. I think that is one of the issues that many posters have brought up on this thread. The lack of desire to integrate, ever.

CaesarAugusta · 09/06/2026 23:10

This is an absolutely genuine question, because I haven't read many reports on this case and may have missed something. But do we know whether the attacker in this case is deemed sane? If he did not have capacity to form the required intent, then he can't be guilty of murder.

I actually think anyone moving to another country should learn the language of that country. Absolutely. That includes Brits in Spain, Dubai or anywhere else. I never suggested otherwise.

...and not speak English in public ..with their family and friends?

Sunglade · 09/06/2026 23:11

Laughable when people bring up the empire. Yes it was such a hardship all these countries having laws, roads and medicine thrust upon them.

Maybe one had a hostile environment applied to them and the other didn't? One had visible difference, the other didn't?

Quick kick all those expats out of Spain and Dubai then

And I agree. Every person moving to live in another country should learn the language of that country. But you clearly think otherwise?

The “fallout” is violence by a bunch of thugs who have been spoiling for an excuse to go on the rampage. It defies belief that a police officer should align himself with them. Let’s hope he’s in a tiny minority in PSNI.

He empathises with the source of their anger. Not their actions.

Stop trying to villainise people who are angry about a man who was beheaded in the middle of the street.

You think the Church of England was wrong when they detailed the need for reparations?

The problem, of course, lies in knowing who is "more of the same". Statistically it is much more likely that people coming in as refugees are just normal people who are escaping something awful, and who want to get their heads down and work to support themselves and/or their family. If we never allow any immigrants in, how do we know whether we are shutting out potential murderers or potential doctors who will save many lives?

We have over a million NEETS. Maybe we could start making use of those people to do the work. Maybe we could train, and employ, our own doctors. That way we wouldn't have to run the risk of importing rapists and murderers.

Yes but “with family and friends” implies in the privacy of their own home.

And it is. If you’re having a private conversation with family, then obviously fine. If you’re in a restaurant ordering a meal, or in a bank getting assistance, but need interpreters to get you through a conversation, then that’s not okay….

Decacaffeinatednow · 09/06/2026 23:19

6 days ago Stephen McCullough was sentenced to 31 years in prison for the murder of his partner Natasha McNally who was 15 weeks pregnant. He stabbed her to death. Why were people not on the streets protesting about that?

Cakeymauve · 09/06/2026 23:19

placemats · 09/06/2026 23:07

Just fecking give over will you.

Why would you use a horrific attack on a person who is in hospital to foment prejudice and and riots?

What possible use is your post other than to spread fear and intimidation.

Too fucking late Einstein. Fear and intimidation was already here when this country allowed these “men” here.

Anyahyacinth · 09/06/2026 23:19

But it doesn’t. Ultimately it’s down to the regimes and leaders of those under developed countries. At the head of any struggling third world country are leaders with fat wallets and living in luxury. If they don’t care about their own people, there’s nothing we can do to help. The money is there but being stockpiled by their leaders.

It is the combination of corrupt country leaders and Western extractives companies / trade policies that work together to make money for themselves and not their people.

The thing is, UK companies like BP, Shell, Anglo American, Tullow Oil etc have grabbed and ruined land and rivers and national parks because they're greedy. And the UK population benefits from their greed.

I don’t think he’s sane. My first reaction was that this is Nottingham all over again.

Yes, of course they were wrong. Totally out of touch with reality.

Well very sorry for you but the UK has changed since the 1950s. We are now a culture with many different origins and we are stringer for it...and we are British and going nowhere. As I often suggest to people like you. Next time you need medical attention make it very clear no one brown or black should be involved in your care. Let's see how you get on then

Why are you equating people who work in the NHS with men who arrive illegally from dangerous countries -countries that are dangerous because of these very men? Why are you drawing equivalence? They have nothing in common unless for some reason you think being non white makes them one homogenous group?

Someone can be livid about the number of men from dangerous countries committing atrocities and violence and at the same time grateful for the people that work in the NHS including the people that are not white.

Seems pretty racist to me to lump these people together.
