Where were the demonstrations when the rich, privately educated killer of Yousef Makki walked away scot free?

There have been demonstrations/ protests about injustices done to Black people/ people of colour- most recently the BLM marches.
The riots in London began as protest over police killing of Mark Duggan.
And of course the regular pro Palestinian marches .
So it’s not true to say that demonstrations only occur when it’s an injustice to white people.

Everyone I know is shocked and disgusted by what happened last night but we will not attack our neighbours and hold our communities to ransom or shut down businesses to retaliate

And again, your evidence for them all being racists are???

Yeah I guess so…. But you’re always on these threads defending these criminals anyways…. So I take what you say with a pinch of salt

Am I? News to me.

Oh, so one of 50,000 knife attacks per year and we are meant to be super duper concerned about this one attack?

Do you mean because he had his eyes gouged out and nearly beheaded what’s the fuss?

PinkandPerky · Yesterday 16:32

Radio 4 played a recording of the attack at 1pm complete with stabbing noises.

I did not want to hear that and I am really upset. There was no warning.

Generally I don't think that.
But Elon Musk is relevant to this thread since it's his post on X that is the start of the thread. I also think only focussing on the racial aspects of a case and trying to make sure everyone else does as well makes it much harder to fix wider problems in eg police response to sexual violence, mental health care provision. As does leaping to conclusions before all the facts of the case are out and insisting that anyone who doesn't is trying to cover something up.

And the initial premise of the thread, that the story isn't being reported, is factually and probably wrong. As is the idea it's only men like Musk publicising it.

It wasn’t being reported on for the severity of what it was until social media (including Facebook) blew up.

As I said further up in the thread, this is becoming more and more prevalent with many crimes where it seems to be ignored or understated unless social media pressure is being applied. So when that happens, it does look like a control of narrative or cover up.

X is awful. Its been reported on BBC. People - unfortunately - get stabbed everyday. Why so much interest in this?

Have you read what happened?

I hope this post is a joke otherwise you win the prize for the most unpleasant poster on MN, and having been here 20+ years I’ve seen a few.

That post has to be some kind of twisted satire? Surely? I can’t let myself believe she’d mean it!

I am 100% serious. Like Norm Macdonald once said:

"What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims?"

I share Norm's terror.

Ok - I was a bit slow!

Has anyone thought about the poor Sudanese man? Forced into violence by evil northern Irish racists… I’m sure that Hannah Spencer individual would concur, her having excused the Manchester Arena bomber and all…

Twiglets1 · Yesterday 16:35

YourGoldSquid · Yesterday 16:26

They shouldn't have even reported on this.

Let alone report that the victim was stabbed, was being beheaded, and had his eyes gouged out.

But here we are. Simply by reporting this attack, the BBC will have blood on their hands.

Shouldn't report the truth? Too bad if it doesn't suit what you want to read about but you don't get to dictate what the BBC "should" & "shouldn't" report.

ZoeCM · Yesterday 16:35

I saw almost zero reporting about a racially aggravated rape of a Sikh woman.

I saw quite a bit of reporting on that disgusting case. The BBC (rightly) covered it fairly extensively.

The riots in London over Duggan began as a small protest but were not really about him by the time they turned into riots. They were about people looting white goods and socks, burning down small businesses and expressing anger at being left behind in the most unhelpful way possible. Usually by attacking those who had slightly more (a lot of very small local businesses were targeted). They were stupid and anyone trying to agitate for them to happen was a POS. Likewise anyone trying to agitated for riots now is. Even if there is genuine grievance buried deep down it's shitty to use someone else's tragedy as an excuse to be violent. And Elon Musk is a POS.

Ikr.
Has Zack Polanski complained about the attacker being hit with a Hurley yet?

Stop it. It is really poor taste.

It has been reported that the man is an asylum seeker. He’d better not be seeking it any longer.

The paramilitaries are going to be out on the streets tonight and they are a lot nastier than the wheelie bin throwing thugs. I predict a long and uncomfortable summer for the politicians and police.

Well that’s something to celebrate isn’t it? Because they’re all nice lads that we’d all be thrilled to have living next door.

He’s not an asylum seeker. The Home Office has confirmed he has leave to remain.

Agree. And now others are doing the same. Really not helpful.

I am sure it is all very hilarious for the people of Belfast who had this happen on their streets and are now going to likely endure a night of violence.

placemats · Yesterday 16:40

I’m a long time journalist. We’ve never reported that degree of detail on mainstream news sites because children may be watching or listening and not everybody wants the stomach churning detail - especially as someone is in custody and may be charged. Perhaps the court case will record some of it.
Elon Musk is not a good actor in this.
And all of you quoting the same “open your eyes” line should think about what you’re actually saying in this context and stop. But you’re not actually thinking, are you? Just repeating right-wing rhetoric.

When I was just a wee girl living in Northern Ireland where I was born, the Northern Ireland news led with a bomb attack and one of the victims who survived lost both her legs at the scene - she had been in Belfast getting her wedding dress. The news came straight after watching the Magic Roundabout.

I was bereft and highly traumatised and it took my mummy ages to settle me.

She and other parents, I wasn't alone in seeing it, started a campaign to not let horrific news be the lead and shown straight after children's programmes.

Eta I agree with your post.
