Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

Richmond sausages instead of Finest or equivalent.
If I have breakfast out I love cheap sausages

Cheap own brand crisps are often a lot more flavoursome then brand names

And they put more in the packet then walkers do

Marrowfat tinned peas if I buy chip shop chips

Ooooh! Definitely need an AMA on working in a chicken factory!
Super Noodles! We’ve actually stopped buying them as I imagine the packaging has more nutrition! But I loves them!

Lidl Fin Carre Fruit and Nut can not be beaten.

True, walkers have managed to have a bigger bag with fewer crisps in. It's 80% air these days.

Heinz macaroni cheese. Reminds me of childhood.

JackJarvisEsq · 07/06/2026 18:11

I love cheap, vinegary ketchup

springyla · 07/06/2026 18:13

Tesco own brand white sliced bread
angel delight
primula cheese spread with ham
any cheap crisps, preferably from a Spa or Costcutter - onion rings, fake chipsticks, anything with the word ‘puff’ in it, all delicious 😋

SpottyAlpaca · 07/06/2026 18:16

Supermarket sandwiches. I much prefer the basic ham, cheese, tuna, prawn etc triangles to the more fancy / expensive / trendy ones which are generally an overpriced disappointment.

I have not had fried bread in years, you don't even get it on cafe breakfasts anymore, i might make some with an egg for lunch during the week.

Even better if fried in bacon fat. 😋

Yes, tried to make gravy and it was no ce, but oh the faff.

vis

Add some of the meat juices to your usual shop gravy, extra depth and taste, no extra faff

Luckydog7 · 07/06/2026 18:29

Absolutely addicted to Macdonald's breakfast wraps. I get a sneaky two on the way back from the school run sometimes. Brown sauce and a hot chocolate. The crappy hashbrowns are the best.

Also partial to a white toasted fish finger sandwich.

Also toasted peanut butter and chocolate spread sandwich (for pudding).

Chips and beans.

Never understood buying branded beans when whatever own brand is basically indistinguishable when it's covered in ketchup/brown sauce and a fraction of the cost.

DH and DC are weird. They like cheap sausages with less meat content. They say that high quality sausages with high meat content are too chewy.

my kids love a Richmond sausage

CollieH9g · 07/06/2026 18:31

Agree with PP the Dr Oetker mushroom pizza is incredible...I throw on some salad at the side to make it a bit healthier 😋

Tarkan · 07/06/2026 18:34

DH is only just home from the shop and I’m so tempted to ask him to go out again to buy chicken kievs as I really want one now. I doubt he would go out again today though LOL.

I think the thing with the cheap mushy kievs is that they seem to keep the filling inside better than the more expensive ones do. I love cutting them open and having that gush of garlic butter coming out. Whenever I splurge on nicer ones the filling always seems to leak in the oven or they’re so posh it’s a more solid filling instead of the basic garlic butter.

I think toad in the hole is better made with Richmond skinless sausages than with posh meaty ones. And yes to just supermarket gravy granules. We use Lidl and they dissolve so much better than Bisto IMO.

Farmfoods do their own version of crispy pancakes and I love the cheese ones done in the air fryer. They also do a lot of pastries that are similar to the Greggs bakes and I prefer them to going to Greggs.

Last night, DP and I couldn’t think what to have for tea for ages until I suggested chips and egg (McCains oven chips of course) and OMG it was the best.

Just had egg and chips for my tea Mcains Gastro👌

No no no, you need to commit. Curly fries and garlic mayo for the full filthy experience.

bittertwisted · 07/06/2026 18:36

Cheap chocolate, sure everyone pretends to like the fancy stuff
beef and tomato pot noodles- not too much water. So the gravy is nice and thick
aldi marmite, it’s much runnier for extra piling on toast

lavendervibes · 07/06/2026 18:37

Tuc crackers with the fake cheese in. They are like crack!

hattie43 · 07/06/2026 18:38

None I don’t do cheap and nasty

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 07/06/2026 18:38
