Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

Fair Trade decaf tea bags from the CoOp - nicest I’ve found

KnittyKnotty · 07/06/2026 16:07

Kraft Cheesy Pasta 😋, none of that made from scratch mac&cheese stuff.

ManyShapesOfPasta · 07/06/2026 16:08

Sausage casserole doesn't taste right unless it's made with a packet sauce.

Delphiniumandlupins · 07/06/2026 16:09

Aldi fruit and nut chocolate. Lidl caramelised onion chutney. Tesco digestive biscuits.

Nottogetapenny · 07/06/2026 16:12

Tinned tuna in brine, Instead of fresh tuna.

GameOfJones · 07/06/2026 16:15

Lidl peanut M&Ms are far superior to the branded version!

ThreeStripeQueen · 07/06/2026 16:22

I’ve had to dig deep for this, clearly I have expensive tastes but fishcakes made with tinned salmon taste best.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 07/06/2026 16:01

Nah that sounds like too much like good quality 🤣

True!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/06/2026 16:32

Lidls red label tea bags are perfectly drinkable (I started a thread on tea bags here).

pinkpanther84 · 07/06/2026 16:35

Richmond sausages. I actually really don’t like good quality sausages with high meat content 🙈

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 07/06/2026 16:40

Crisps. Give me a Wotsit or a Frazzle over your sea salt and balsamic vinegar hand-cut organic potato crisp any day!

Fried bread has to be the cheap white sliced for me. Nothing else has that golden crispiness.

I have not had fried bread in years, you don't even get it on cafe breakfasts anymore, i might make some with an egg for lunch during the week.

Paxo stuffing. I don’t like posh or fresh stuffings - paxo is the only one for me, its nostalgic as I was brought up on it as part of our Sunday dinner every week.

Try the Co-Op own brand one. I'm a convert to that now.

Hands down the best gravy is Aldi's own! I used to always buy Bisto until I tried Aldi!

Yes! It's the only one my DC will eat.

For me, sliced white bread for toast and Marmite. I know it's UPF crap. But it's delicious!

I used to work at DEFRA in the Meat Hygiene inspectorate. The reality of what mechanically recovered meat is would shock most people I think.

Imagine all the collagen in it though 💅

citybroker1234 · 07/06/2026 16:47

Butterscotch Angel Delight…..full of rubbish, but one of the best things ever.

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/06/2026 16:54

Tinned hot dogs in cheap white rolls. They are the only thing I eat ketchup with!

😂😂😂😂😂

JumpingPumpkin · 07/06/2026 16:59

Choc ices, love cheapest own-brand ones.

Tortoisel · 07/06/2026 17:00

Wow yes! With you on the Kievs too.

I can have a normal Kiev but it’s a different vibe. The soft shitty ones are perfect for a midweek easily digestible meal.

Another one for me is sausages. I find some meals much better suit a shite Richmond sausage. A full English being one of them. It is not right with a proper sausage.

ItsmeMargo · 07/06/2026 17:02

Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie in a tin. I love that crispy top, and that sloppy bit between the top and the meat. I like it with peas. Wish I had one right now.

Brightbluesomething · 07/06/2026 17:03

Since tinned potatoes (food of my childhood camping holidays) and angel delight have already been mentioned I’d say the cheapest possible cheese slices are amazing on burgers. Nothing hits quite like the artificial taste, and I love actual cheeses any other time. But not on a burger.
Oh and most own brand sauces. They’re tastier, cheaper and lower in salt, sugar and calories.

Gravy granules

Ooooo yes

ItWasntMyFault · 07/06/2026 17:06

Jam - give me the extra cheep economy stuff any day - I can’t stand the posh ones with lumps of fruit in.

Travsmam · 07/06/2026 17:06

I’m shocking…..I love the cheap pots of mash you add water too, little bit of butter and pour gravy granules over. Bloody delicious 🤤
