Which cheap and nasty food item do you choose over more expensive and better quality alternatives?

For me it’s chicken kievs. I love the crispy outside and the mushy chicken inside. I know they’re not the best, I actually work in a chicken factory so I know exactly what goes into it! But it still doesn’t put me off 🤣 Clearly my standards are on the floor…

What’s your cheap and nasty favourite?

Paxo stuffing. I don’t like posh or fresh stuffings - paxo is the only one for me, its nostalgic as I was brought up on it as part of our Sunday dinner every week.

I raise you.. supermarket own sage and onion stuffing is my go to!

Lidl Belgian beer in the little stubby bottles. Absolutely mint on a hot summer evening and just enough in a bottle that I can have two and not feel fuzzy headed (unlike cans where one isn't quite enough and two is too much)

Choc ices, love cheapest own-brand ones.

Also agree with this, farm foods own brand ones are pure nostalgia

Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie in a tin. I love that crispy top, and that sloppy bit between the top and the meat. I like it with peas. Wish I had one right now.

I love them too. I’ve got one in the cupboard, possibly out of date. They seem to have regained popularity recently.

comoatoupeira · 07/06/2026 17:12

I like the white chocolate chip cookies from sainsburies bakery

Mumof2wifeof1crazytimes · 07/06/2026 17:14

Grim but sausages. Give me Tesco’s own brand instead of the finest range any day.

Butterscotch angel delight
Artic roll with custard

Heinz ravioli in a tin😋. I do also like fancy fresh ravioli with walnuts and dolcelatte in my defence….

Dr Oetaker pizza here too, I don’t think they are particularly cheap any more. All food seems expensive at the moment.

Morrisons online had them at 1.75 a few months ago. Sadly I could only fit 3 in the freezer.

Last night, DP and I couldn’t think what to have for tea for ages until I suggested chips and egg (McCains oven chips of course) and OMG it was the best.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 07/06/2026 17:26

Not me but my (French) husband prefers the soft pain au chocolats that come individually wrapped to actual ones from the boulangerie- he’s mad in my opinion!

orangegato · 07/06/2026 17:27

59p own brand white chocolate.

Hands down the best gravy is Aldi's own! I used to always buy Bisto until I tried Aldi!

Ooh thanks for this! Next gravy I buy will be from Aldi!

tichbrew · 07/06/2026 17:30

I'm probably quite picky about food but I do sometimes indulge in some awful for you, cheap, from a packet spicy noodles which I enjoy with a slice of cheap white buttered bread.

We went our monthly Tesco shop today, it was up £40 and we were missing a few things and I had no alcohol! It is scary how much food has gone up,

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/06/2026 17:31

I like an artisan seeded loaf as much as the next person but - cheap white bread for the win, for fried bread, bread pudding, bread sauce and bacon butties.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 07/06/2026 17:35

I love garlic sausage. I know it's rubbish processed meat and probably cancerous, but I can't resist. Luckily, it's quite hard to find, so I have it very rarely.

ladymalfoy · 07/06/2026 17:35

Bernard Matthews Mini Kiev's

Ophy83 · 07/06/2026 17:35

Aldi Fiesta ice lollies... their version of a Feast, but so much better

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 07/06/2026 17:36

Oh, and along the same lines, that super plasticky Bavarian Smoked Cheese. Something about the rubbery texture is sensory heaven for me.

Well, there’s no innards, they’re sent off with the waste like heads, feathers etc. Once the birds are dead, they’re hung on shackles and travel around the factory to have everything removed. In my department they have their wings removed, then the body is sliced off leaving only the legs on the shackles which are then removed and packed.

The bodies travel along a conveyor belt and are put onto cones, where they have the breast meat sliced off. The empty carcass then carries on along a different belt where they go into a big mincer and are ground up into cheap pie/nugget/hotdog filling.

So there’s very little actual meat. It’s mostly bone!

This is really interesting, thanks for sharing. I’m undecided whether it’s enough to put me off, currently fascinated rather than disgusted but time will tell..

EnoughRain · 07/06/2026 17:39

Agree re chicken Kievs. I buy them from m&s and I only like the ones that are preformed chicken mush inside.

Also, I only eat bread about once a year if that, in the form of toast with marmite. I want that toast to be made of lovely white plastic bread.

And to my husband’s chagrin, I much prefer M&S cheese coleslaw to his homemade version.
