How can I deal with my adult daughter refusing to wear a seatbelt?

IdaSpare · Yesterday 18:21

Please help, I'm at the end of my tether, my 21 year old daughter who will not wear a seatbelt either driving or as a passenger. She was always brought up to wear it and everyone else in the family always wears one. I think it's a sensory thing as she has always been very difficult about changing clothes or dealing with zips and labels etc but if she is going to drive a car, she has to wear it. It's quite unusual for me to be in a car with her anymore but every time recently I have been, I've had to tell her to put it on. I know she goes straight back to not wearing one when I'm not there. I've resorted to threatening to call the police on her myself but short of taking her keys off her I don't know what to do. I'm hoping I can show her this and she can realise how reckless and stupid she's being. Please, if any of you have any pearls of wisdom to share about dealing with a stubborn, know it all daughter, I'd be so grateful.

Yes people are fucking stupid, some of them don’t even read the OPs posts on MN threads.

People are stupid.... saying stupid things like "she's only a danger to herself" or "there snore dangerous things to worry about '

If she can't wear a seatbelt she isn't a safe driver. She shouldn't travel in a car, ever. This is true of a significant number of people it's insane how "essential" driving is treated as being.

So, how’s she going to be stopped? What legislation?

Absolutely, and to be fair, the first thing I say in my car is put it on and she does, it's when I'm not in the car, which is most of the time.

I worked with someone who lost her similar age son in a crash. He was the only one in the car who died and he was the only one not wearing a seat belt. And the Diana cash - the only survivor was the only one wearing a seatbelt.

Harsh as it sounds I'd get the police to talk to her. Or at least threaten it. But you can't watch her all the time. How scary though.

God, I definitely wouldn't call the cops down on her. She would never trust you again, ever. Never. Or forgive you. And after all, she's the one most likely to suffer if there's an accident. On the other hand, she would be thrown around the car and maybe land on other passengers confined by their seatbelts and injure them. That fact might just help persuade her. But if it doesn't, well, that's life. I would NEVER grass on my child unless they were a murderer or rapist or something. And, she's young. Barely out of childhood ? Ten to one she'll grow up and grow out of it.

She won't be stopped she will continue pleasing her arrogant and narcissistic self and if she ends up causing a death (the seatbelt thing won't be the only deficit - she will definitely be a drive texter for a start) she will boohoo at her trauma and not give a fuck for her victim.

Most people who kill someone when driving don't go to prison after conviction.

So... The OPs daughter still remains a danger to others

You literally said she's only endangering her own life.... Which isn't true.

CurdinHenry · Yesterday 20:50

Honestly I think her being killed by her own stupidity is the best case scenario.

Why do people not understand things like the OPs daughter is a danger to others?

FML82 · Yesterday 20:51

My cousin died because he crashed his car not wearing a seatbelt, ruined his mums life.
Report her to the police, better she gets a sharp shock now than the worse case scenario.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 20:52

If you call he police and report this, they are not going to be using ANPR etc to look for her, and pull her over.

There are fates worse than death…. She needs to consider that!

“Intelligence” oh please give over!!

Mummy’s called to say her adult daughter doesn’t wear her seatbelt and the police deal with this as “intelligence”.

I don’t think you realise the police are very stretched!

What would you call it when people tell the police information about something occurring? It’s recorded as intelligence and it takes an officer or PCSO moments to record. I’m not saying that it’s the crime of the century but it is one of the fatal four traffic offences related to road deaths. I’ve seen too many traffic collision files relating to young people in particular who have not survived due to the lack of a seat belt.

👏

Some PP think they’re going to put a national marker on her car!

Absolutely. I was just thinking in terms of something that keeps her from maiming innocent strangers. I don't wish quadraplegia on anyone but better her than someone I care about.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · Yesterday 20:55

I’m quite short and find the seatbelt can rub my neck. So I have seatbelt covers on my belts so it feels softer

HaymitchAbernathy · Yesterday 20:55

Baskingintheheat · Yesterday 18:24

You don't drive a car with her in it until she puts the seatbelt on.

This^ You are breaking the law if you don't wear a seatbelt and if your passenger does not wear one. You are not insured. Do not drive.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · Yesterday 20:56

Search on Amazon etc

CupcakeFunny · Yesterday 20:57

I was like this and was thrown 40 feet out my side window and landed on my face. Took off about 1/4 of my face. I was 22 weeks pregnant and my son was born unalive three days later. I have never not worn my belt since. Hard lesson for me to learn

Toddlerteaplease · Yesterday 20:57

Absolutely do not drive with her as a passenger, you will get prosecuted.

This isn’t true! The passenger over the age of 14 is responsible for themself.

I agree you can refuse to drive them, but the driver is not legally responsible for them.

Inform the insurance company
She might wise up when her insurance goes up

Wouldn’t it invalidate her insurance?

8TinyToeBeans · Yesterday 21:00

She needs to see the impact - no pun intended - of not wearing a seatbelt. I witnessed a fatal car crash not long after I passed my test. Idiot young lads driving too fast on country roads, hit a stone wall, flipped the car. I was volunteering in a cats protection place where they crashed and we saw it happen. The passenger survived but I can still hear his screams. But as they say, it’s the silent victims you worry about and that was the driver who had not been wearing his seatbelt. He was ejected from the vehicle, over a stone wall and landed a good 5 metres from the vehicle. He did not survive. I always wore a seatbelt anyway, but anytime it frustrates me, I think back to that dead body on the grass.

LoremIpsumCici · Yesterday 21:02

Seatbelts were a new fangled thing to the generations before me so I’ve been around adults who refused to wear one. I never got into a car where someone refused to put their seatbelt on. Even taxi drivers. That’s all you can do. She is an adult, if she doesn’t want a seatbelt on when she’s not around you that is her decision. It’s no different from going cycling with no cycle helmet. I wouldn’t call the police or anything. You need to accept you can’t control her. It isn’t a sensory thing as she can do it when you are with her. And if you just let it go, she may start wearing it without feeling like she is giving in to your demands.
