NC’d to say I’m his sister-in-law and I’m reading through your lovely posts. We are all devastated. He was every bit the wonderful person you have all said he was. He and my sister were together for over 40 years and I have never heard anyone say a bad word about him in all that time.

I’m so sorry for your loss! He was clearly much loved in the UK, one of those rare actors that leaps off the screen in our consciousness.

May his memory be a blessing.

Sunshinemoonlightboogie · 06/06/2026 07:49

@AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw I have been a huge fan of AH since I was a child and have just introduced my children to Buffy, they are now obsessed. They’d already watched Merlin and Ted Lasso, so were new fans of your bro-in-law. They were so sad at the news. He crossed the generations. Personally, I can’t tell you how much happiness his performances brought me. That is SUCH a gift. But reading about the work he and your sister did in relation to Battersea was incredible this morning. I felt utterly vindicated in my fandom. Sending love and condolences to you all.

shhblackbag · 06/06/2026 07:55

@AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw Many condolences to you and the rest of the family, for the loss of your sister as well. I'm so sorry.

Badgeroffate · 06/06/2026 08:01

I was so sorry to hear this and condolences to his family.

Many years ago he was filming Merlin at Raglan castle. I was visiting the castle for the day with my then 1yo DD who’d just learned to walk and was getting faster by the minute. She ran away from me down the hill and I saw her fall onto some armoured legs which belonged to Anthony Head! He picked her up, swung her in the air so she giggled and handed her back to me saying what a beautiful and clever child she was (obviously!!).

Such a kind man and a brilliant actor.

His mother was a beautiful, talented actress called Helen Shingler. She was such a lovely woman and lived to be 100.

Amazing, thank you for sharing. Much love to you all x

@AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw he has left an amazing legacy that has touched so many people's lives. I am so sorry for your loss, please pass on my condolences.

He was very attractive when he was young and in the coffee advert and I think he was more attractive when he was older.
Is it all right if it isn't actually Gold Blend at tomorrow's elevenses, just ordinary Nescafe?
He was wickedly attractive in Vanity Fair.

Edited

Didn't know he was in a Vanity Fair adaptation. Wlil look out for that one!

So sorry for your family's loss. I hope it brings some comfort to know how much he was loved by people who had never even met him. His humanity and intelligence shone through in all his roles. I didn't know until yesterday about his animal rescue work, but it all tallies with the amazing human being he clearly was.

I recall getting home one night and Mum telling me: "Your Uncle Charlie says that the kiss is going to be shown during Coronation Street tonight!"

Yes, we tuned in for the advert.

I love that! I remember the thrill every time a new one popped up. Guess back then we couldn't fast forward through them or pick our phones up to scroll through during the ads so we became invested.

I've just read the tribute from Sharon Maughan (the Gold Blend lady) and by the sounds of it they had a lovely friendship off screen too.

banivani · 06/06/2026 10:11

Was very sorry to see this this morning, and very sorry for his daughters and their loss. Also a old Buffy fan - that show was really elevated by his acting. Had hoped to see him in a lot more for a long time.

His mother was a beautiful, talented actress called Helen Shingler. She was such a lovely woman and lived to be 100.

Helen Shingler was Madame Maigret in the classic BBC adaptation with Rupert Davies. Frequently repeated on the Talking Pictures channel. She did a great job with very few scenes, lines and storylines. How lovely to learn of this connection to Anthony Head, and Murray Head, who starred in Sunday, Bloody Sunday with Glenda Jackson and Peter Finch. A great favourite of mine. My deepest @AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw.

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/06/2026 17:09

On every MN thread about celebrity encounters (and there are many), only ASH and Michael Palin are universally loved, I've never read a bad word about either of them, and the more we are learning about ASH, the more there is to admire.

@AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw my sincere condolences to you and your family Flowers. Thank you for coming on to this thread.

I've discovered that the full series of Merlin is available on BBC iPlayer, so I'll be rewatching that. I never watched Buffy, but intend to remedy that! Full series is free on ITV player.

He sounds like a lovely man who has gone far, far, too early. ❤️‍🩹

Loved Giles in Buffy. Here he is wigging out the scoobies singing in Season Four:

That's lovely 🥲😢

Buffy isn't my thing, so I hadn't seen that.

thank you 🤗

I hadn't realised that, or that Murray was his brother. What an incredibly talented family 😍

I knew I'd read something about his mother yesterday but couldn't remember what. Madame Maigret. Yes, I'm old enough to remember although they repeat on Talking Pictures. Thank you.

Ronathediva13 · 06/06/2026 17:59

Such sad news. It was only on reading an obituary that I remembered how much he has been in that I love. My first thought was Giles but of course he did so much more. Wonderful human being as well, I’ve heard so many good stories about him.

Having the most awful day with big stuff going on (DH very ill) and knowing we've lost ASH (he will always be Anthony Stewart Head to a certain generation) really has undone me more than anyone since Bowie.

Yeah we don't know them (I know people who met him and said he was lovely) but you watch enough Buffy...

Hope things will improve for you and your DH xx

SaySomethingMan · 06/06/2026 18:40

What a brilliant actor. RIP Uther Pendragon.

Fernticket · 06/06/2026 18:44

So so sorry to hear that ASH has passed. He was in so many different programmes and was a joy to watch in all of them. Like many of us I have fond memories of the Gold Blend adverts.
@AnthonyHeadsSisterInLaw , my sincere condolences to you and your nieces on the loss of both your sister and Anthony.

Thank you for this. Buffy wasn't on my radar when it was first broadcast so I think it's time to start watching!

The last thing I saw ASH in was Ted Lasso, so seeing him play a goodie will be a nice palate cleanser 🙂

Meyerslyd · 06/06/2026 19:15

Met him a few times and one of his daughters’ in Wales, he was doing work in Dr. Who.
A thoroughly lovely gentleman.
I feel so sad for his daughters.
