So sad rip

OP posts:
HappySheldon · Today 19:32

I fancied him dreadfully in Buffy.

In no small part he was a reason why I left my home coutnry to try my fortunes in the UK (and eventually married my own handsome blonde genteel Englishman).

WiddlinDiddlin · Today 19:34

Absolutely fucking gutted, particularly for Daisy and Emily. Awful news. I did know he wasn't handling losing Sarah all that well but I hadn't realised he was so unwell :(

He was, well they both were, extremely kind to me as they were to many many people. A loss for the world.

EverythingGolden · Today 19:36

Oh no that’s sad to hear. Dd has been watching Buffy this week and I’ve always enjoyed watching him in whatever he was in. The poor daughters.

MaggieBsBoat · Today 19:36

Oh he has a most beautiful voice. Rest in peace beloved Anthony, forever our Nescafé man.

xsquared · Today 19:40

Ah, Tony Head.

While he's arguably better known for being Giles in Buffy, I associate him with the 80s Gold Blend adverts. I don't think I've ever heard him sing, but I know he played Dr Frankfurter in The Rocky Horror Show, as a girl from my year thought he was the sexiest man alive having seen the theatre show multiple times.

RIP.

DS and I are gutted about this news - we love Giles and Herc and Mr Gently Benevolent! 😭I never met him (though our friend who lives in Bath said he'd bump into him a fair bit and that he was lovely) and really wish I had, even if just at the top of an autograph queue at a con. Such a gorgeous voice and calm-seeming demeanour. And his poor, poor family.

I think we're watching Buffy this evening.

Rupert Giles was a great character. Also enjoyed Anthony Head’s work in Merlin. And he made a great alien headteacher in Doctor Who.

He was brilliant as King Uther in Merlin.

I also thought he was great as the baronet in Persuasion.

What a shame - far too young to die.

RIP Herc (Cabin Pressure). The most beautiful syrupy voice.

Omg I forgot he was in cabin pressure.
I'll have to relisten to every episode in his honour
Whilst fitting in rewatching buffy

Remember the coffee advert 🥰

My mam was mad about him in those ads all those years ago.. I'm surprised she didn't become a coffee drinker!

Sad sad news, and only 72. I loved him in Rocky Horror Show in London

That must have been brilliant! What an experience it must have been for you

Threetoedsloth · Today 19:49

Too sad.

To all accounts he seems to have been a delightful chap. Loved all his work. His poor girls, having just lost their mum too.

ComfyKnickers · Today 19:49

I saw him in Rocky Horror many years ago. It was at the same time that he was in those Gold Blend coffee adverts. Someone from the audience shouted 'I thought you were in New York!'

😆😆😆

ilovesushi · Today 19:49

Gutted. Loved him as Giles in Buffy. Loved his coffee ads before that. Remember him being interviewed by Graham Norton in the early 2000s and he was so normal and likeable and funny. RIP you were an wonderful actor and human being.

Tonissister · Today 19:50

He was a wonderful actor. RIP.

NameChangeMay2026 · Today 20:02

Oh no! He was so good in Ted Lasso. Didn't realise he was the Gold Blend man.

Died of pneumonia at 72? How do people who aren't ultra-old and frail die of pneumonia in this day and age? Is like something out of Dickens. Surely it should have been preventable?

PeachMelbaRose · Today 20:06

I can’t remember the last time a celebrity death made me feel this sad. Probably Alan Rickman.

Herc was the best.

I’d forgotten mr Gently Benevolent!! Have that on audible so will be having a listen in tribute.

Mm.. he'd lost his life partner only 6 months ago and that loss was really quite a shock they had very very little warning that she was unwell and she was gone before anyone fully processed it. I don't think he had recovered at all from that, particularly when they both expected she'd outlive him.

Ferro · Today 20:12

... richer smoother flavour?

EeyoresLostTail · Today 20:17

Vey Sad R.I.P He was a brilliant Actor xx

Tortielady · Today 20:21

What an awful loss. I loved Giles, he was absolutely the heart and moral compass of BtVS. And as others have said, 72 isn't very old. He'll be much missed.

scalt · Today 20:23

Is this the same Anthony Head who was the prime minister in Little Britain, or are we not allowed to mention that?

”Sebastian, would you like to show the ex-chancellor out now?”

People die of pneumonia all the time! But mostly when something else - age and frailty, other diseases including cancer and neuro- degenerative disease has undermined the body to such an extent that it can’t overcome it. 72 is not young. And grief can genuinely kill too. A man of his age will often go one of two ways - decide to start again and be quite full on doing so or just pine away and greater or lesser speed. A friend of ours did the latter. Albeit slowly. When one of his kids tried to encourage him along he said ‘ you don’t understand, I’ve lost my wife. That’s it’ OTH another friend was on online dating in 4 months. They both loved their wives deeply and sincerely. Men are a lot less resilient than women.

I have been a fan for years and am absolutely gutted at the news! He was a true talent and always seemed like such a lovely man.

BellsoftheCarols · Today 20:34

Very sad to read this.

He was always popping up in a huge range of shows, especially fantasy and sci fi, more recently various comedy series. Merlin, Dr Who, Ted Lasso, Motherland, Little Britain off the top of my head, and so many more besides. Always a highlight wherever he appeared. What a career he's had, and clearly a very beloved performer from the outpouring of love today. RIP.
