Things that inexplicably taste better when you change their shape

Cheddar cheese just tastes better to me if you grate it first and then eat it in little squished up balls of grated cheese 🤣

What else tastes better when you change its shape but don’t do anything else to it?

Butter cannot be melted when eaten in baked potato skins.
same ⬆️ goes for butter on toast (& the triangle theme applies here too!) with marmite.
Slices of fresh apple are tastier than if the apple is bitten into.
Egg yolk is much tastier when runny than when hard boiled.
Carrots need to be sliced lengthwise & used to eat maximum dips from Houmus!

Carrots much better in sticks than circles …. Can only
eat a few of the latter

When I was a small child my favourite vegetable was Belos (pronounced Beelows). They were orange, and disc shaped, and really tasty. They were in no way similar to carrots, which were sticks, and fucking minging.

A few years into my enjoyment of Belos, my parents went away for a weekend and Grandma came to look after us. "What veggies do you want with dinner?" she asked. "Belos!" I said. "What the hell are Belos?" my Grandma responded.

And that was how I learnt that mothers lie.

I still prefer Belos to carrots though.

With the cheese I think it is something to do with the increased surface area.

Bucking the trend, my children only liked "penny carrots" and turned up their noses at "stick carrots". And my stepdaughter turned it up a notch by declaring that she would only eat "smooth carrots" (peeled with a peeler before slicing) and not "rough carrots" (scraped with a knife).

I'm with your stepdaughter - I hate the texture of carrot skin.

I also hate green beans, unless they're in a curry or a bean salad. They have a smell and a stringiness that makes me gag if they're not served with something zingy or spicy. Mange tout makes me gag, as well.

Grated carrot
grated cheese
apple slices
toast triangles
roast potatoes (in fact most veg)

Absolute no to grated carrot. Ruins it. Other forms of raw carrot very nice, especially batons.

MrsMoastyToasty · Today 17:04

Swede us best mashed, not cubed.
Carrot is best raw not cooked.
Bar chocolate is better than the same brand as an Easter egg
Boiled eggs taste better with the end of the shell bashed off, nit sliced off.

MrsAvocet · Today 17:28

I definitely agree about drinks and their containers. I won't drink tea out of a mug witha dark interior, it has to be white or at least a pale colour. And diet coke is best drunk direct from the can or a glass bottle. Its not the same in a plastic bottle.
And pasta is very shape dependent. Penne or fusilli taste much better than spaghetti.
Oh and I don't like Cadbury's dairy milk bars but I love chocolate buttons anf Freddos.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Today 17:31

Pasta. Shapes are manky. It's got to be spaghetti. At an absolute push tagliatelle, but even then I'll probably not eat it.

MyCottageGarden · Today 17:42

Chocolate when it’s thin

RiskyBiz · Today 17:43

I can eat cheese grated or extremely thinly sliced. Thick sliced cheese? No. Even though I'll add several pieces of thinly sliced cheese into my baguette I do not want one thick piece.
Easter eggs used to be delicious compared to bars but now most chocolate is just gross no matter what shape it is (looking at you Cadburys and Nestle).
Jacket potatoes - you need to take the middle out and mash the butter in, melting it over the top is absolutely not right or the same taste.

Mydahliasareshit · Today 18:05

Chicken breasts or chops battened out until they're thin escalopes. Much nicer to eat and quicker to cook.

IDontHaveTimeForFoolishness · Today 18:06

Peaches to Flat peaches x

When a friend told me she liked some shapes of pasta but not others, my first thought was that this was ridiculous. Then I thought about it, and realised that although I'll eat any shape of pasta I've got a definite preference for curly pasta and long flat pasta over straight tubes and butterflies, and judge novelty pasta shapes according to how pretty I think they look.

(Tinned pasta in slime is a completely different category. I'll eat that only if politeness requires it.)

Ethelspagetti · Today 18:07

Chocolate buttons taste better than any chocolate bar. But chocolate tastes best when melted! Yum 😋

Love a plain boiled potato. It needs to be a nice creamy variety, though. Perfect for mashing up with the food your eating and not turning into a gloopy mess.

Pasta is an obvious one I've not seen mentioned. Macaroni bolognaise would be bloody weird and fusilli cheese just plain claggy. Penne and rigatoni are more of a halfway house. Surface area, again.

And tea tastes different in different coloured cups. Even ones the same shape.

Agree about pasta! I don't really like pasta but I can take spaghetti. No other shapes are palatable - and I don't know why! It's all the same stuff!

Currents taste horrible in coleslaw

water tastes horrible drank out of cups or mugs.,

thenewaveragebear1983 · Today 18:16

Apples cut with the apple corer
mango hedgehogs
water must be in a pint glass or it does quench any thirst at all for me

Homebirdy · Today 18:21

cured meats taste significantly better when rolled up into tubes, or balls of prosciutto.

cheese strings taste better when they are stringed/pulled apart.

tomatoes taste better in wedges

baby potatoes taste better halved than whole.

Simonjt · Today 18:25

I once decided to be a nice parent and cut roti into little hearts, apparently they taste disgusting as whole roti now. Being a nice parent is overrated.

FaintlyMacabre · Today 18:25

I agree with a lot of these- particularly carrot batons, sliced apples and tea from a china mug with a white inside.
But I’m sure most of us on here have told a toddler to stop complaining about the wrong cup, or toast cut the wrong way, or pasta in a new shape. We adults are just as bad!

Agree-electricity doesn’t go well with coleslaw!

Agree! I also think that plain ham sandwiches (on white bread!) tastes better if you squash them first 🤣

Wrong!!!

you add the crisps and then squash them 🤣
