Things that inexplicably taste better when you change their shape

Cheddar cheese just tastes better to me if you grate it first and then eat it in little squished up balls of grated cheese 🤣

What else tastes better when you change its shape but don’t do anything else to it?

Easter egg chocolate just tastes better even if it’s the same chocolate.

Roast potatoes cut so there is a long piece to crisp up rather than just round.

Chocolate transformed into Easter eggs.

Some of these are for genuine reasons though.

e.g. grated carrot is sweeter and stronger flavoured than batons, which in turn are sweeter and stronger tasting than rounds. This is because the surface area in each case is larger in relation to the mass of carrot consumed. The freshly cut surface releases sugar and aromatic compounds.

e. g. Easter egg chocolate tased better than the equivalent bar because it has to be tempered for longer to hold the Easter egg shape, and tempering improves texture which (in chocolate) improves flavour.

That’s interesting about Easter egg chocolate!

Sorry, just saw this!
Great minds 😉

Big crisps taste better than small ones.
carrot batons rather than sliced
mashed potato rather than boiled
tea in a china cup rather than mug

Edited

Mashed potato isn't just boiled potato reshaped though. It's had a load of butter, cream, salt and pepper added. Possibly also grated cheese and mustard 🤤
For most people, mash is so obviously going to taste better.
I didn't used to like mash, because growing up, my mum literally just mashed up boiled potatoes. It was dry and horrid 😂

I’m so sorry this happened to you! My mum used to serve peeled boiled potato (think mash before it has been mashed!) and that was pretty vile!

Toast cut diagonally in a toast rack

Not quite the same thing but orange juice tastes way nicer with ice than without

How sharp is your toast rack?! Grin

Cheese sandwiches taste better when you take a picnic and they've had several hours to go warm. 😂

Oh we were also given large, quartered skin-on boiled potatoes often as well. Not with sauce or anything to make them palatable though. Usually served with a grilled pork chop (no seasoning) or piece of microwaved salmon (no seasoning, just bunged in the microwave!) and some microwaved broccoli&carrots.
We were very fortunate to be fed such good nutrition every evening but a dash of salt and butter would not have gone amiss 😬

YoBetty · Today 12:59

Grapes, strawberries and tomatoes all taste much nicer at room temperature than they do straight out of the fridge. Cucumber on the other hand....

Vodka is better than potatoes.

I have not voluntarily eaten a plain boiled potato for decades.

dailyconniptions · Today 13:09

Danish pastries sliced into thin long strips are better.

BunnyLake · Today 13:11

I can’t (won’t) drink tea or coffee in a mug. It doesn't have to be thin bone china but it must be a cup.

YoBetty · Today 13:11

Have you tried a Mars bar cut into thin slices and then refrigerated? A delight.

The island of Ireland survived and thrived on plain boiled potatoes for centuries.
All you need to add is some salty butter and you have a food fit for a king

People eulogise about the dry, floury, freshly dug kerr pinks.
Ah memories.

It’s how we used to have them all the time as kids, but I didn’t make them for my kids. New potatoes with butter yes, plain boiled potatoes never, seems too much like a thing from the past.

Or rose in a chunky wine glass - thin stem tastes much better!

Champagne/cremant/prosecco need to be in a flute. All wine tastes better in a glass with a stem. Stemless glasses are wrong.

Calypsocuckoo · Today 13:19

I love a shaped crumpet , like a tree shape at Christmas or a heart on Valentine’s Day, not sure why but they just taste better. So well done they are practically burnt with loads of butter 😋

Walkacrossthesand · Today 13:19

@BunnyLakeI am the opposite - much prefer coffee from a mug, especially the giant cups with silly little handles that Costa have. I ask for a mug every time
