Things that inexplicably taste better when you change their shape

Cheddar cheese just tastes better to me if you grate it first and then eat it in little squished up balls of grated cheese 🤣

What else tastes better when you change its shape but don’t do anything else to it?

Love a plain boiled potato. It needs to be a nice creamy variety, though. Perfect for mashing up with the food your eating and not turning into a gloopy mess.

Pasta is an obvious one I've not seen mentioned. Macaroni bolognaise would be bloody weird and fusilli cheese just plain claggy. Penne and rigatoni are more of a halfway house. Surface area, again.

And tea tastes different in different coloured cups. Even ones the same shape.

Chocolate buttons taste better than the same chocolate in a bar form.
Peanut butter from the spoon much nicer than spread on anything
Grated cheese is better than sliced
4 finger Kit Kat better than 2 , taste wise
Maltese’s from a box much nicer than from a packet
Big Yorkshires better than individual ones

…. anything nicked from someone else’s plate !

Oh we were also given large, quartered skin-on boiled potatoes often as well. Not with sauce or anything to make them palatable though. Usually served with a grilled pork chop (no seasoning) or piece of microwaved salmon (no seasoning, just bunged in the microwave!) and some microwaved broccoli&carrots.
We were very fortunate to be fed such good nutrition every evening but a dash of salt and butter would not have gone amiss 😬

It took me until adulthood to realise that I don’t dislike most vegetables and I actually really like a lot of them…just not when they are boiled in plain water until they go soggy with no seasoning

Champagne/cremant/prosecco need to be in a flute. All wine tastes better in a glass with a stem. Stemless glasses are wrong.

Has to be a THIN stem though - none of these monstrosities!

Agree! I also think that plain ham sandwiches (on white bread!) tastes better if you squash them first 🤣

Is it possible that you prefer everything squished?

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · Today 13:56

Drumstick Squashies definitely taste nicer when squashed (although the clue is in the name!)

WingBingo · Today 13:58

Fries not chips.

potatoes in general actual. Agree about plain boiled potatoes. DM served them like that. Boring.

MrsE · Today 13:59

Plain crisps taste better in a squashed sandwich (triangle shape) than eaten on their own
Peanut butter tastes better when spread on apple
Most fruit tastes better at room temperature
Not sure it counts but Ribena is better hot than cold

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · Today 14:01

Roundtrees blackcurrant fruit gums tasted better than a plain round blackcurrant fruit gum.

CliveBixbee · Today 14:02

Definitely pasta.

Rigatoni much better than penne, casarecce much better than fusilli etc.

canuckup · Today 14:14

Wine in a fancy glass. An old Nutella jar rinsed out just doesn't add anything -

Allseeingallknowing · Today 14:14

Carrots taste nicer when cut in batons instead of rounds. Runner beans taste nicer when shredded using a special gadget, rather than cut into lengths.

OliviaBonas · Today 14:15

Toddlerteaplease · Today 12:27

Easter egg chocolate just tastes better even if it’s the same chocolate.

Agree!

Allseeingallknowing · Today 14:16

Bacon sandwiches taste nicer made with white bread, and cut into four.

Monty36 · Today 14:17

Mash of any vegetable sort.
Butter when it melts and goes over another food.
Bread in some shapes are better. French white boule. Farmhouse loaf.
Streaky bacon is better than back
Crinkle chips are better than flat ones

Greenwriter76 · Today 14:19

Most fruit, including apples, is more palatable sliced

IamEarthymama · Today 14:21

Re potatoes... do you all mean that your parents served boiled potatoes that had been cooked without salt?
and then there was no butter?

I could faint in shock! Cook's bonus- scalding hot new potato with a little slab of cold butter while plating up!

My heart goes out to you all, and my thanks to my nanna and mam who knew the correct ways of the potato!

neverinyourwildestdreams · Today 14:22

Can I just add as a former fussy eater, I feel very indicated that everyone agrees carrots cut differently do taste different, as my mother tried to gaslight me for years that this wasn’t the case 🤣

On that vein, fussy child me would’ve argued turkey only tasted good in the shape of a dinosaur 🤣

now I’d say orange juice is nicer in a small glass rather than a big glass, toast is better cut diagonally, broccoli tastes better as tender stem and certain spoons make yoghurt taste better!

I've been offered cold boiled potatoes in Italy, and with salt and a good slug of olive oil they're suddenly delicious.

Which brings me on to pasta. Every single shape tastes different, obviously.

Triangle sandwiches are better than squares or rectangles.

My DH would agree with you!

What is this special gadget?! In case I have a glut again this year...

Tortielady · Today 14:38

I don't mind tea, coffee or any other hot drink in any sort of ceramic mug or cup. Good china does fine teas and coffees more justice and is nicer for special occasions, but apart from that, if it's a proper cup or mug, it'll do. The minute a hot drink is poured into a disposable cup, it becomes...something else and it's not as good. I won't say I never have a hot drinks in disposable cups, but it's not on a par - even when it's the same brew from the same source.

This, used it for years!

Bucking the trend, my children only liked "penny carrots" and turned up their noses at "stick carrots". And my stepdaughter turned it up a notch by declaring that she would only eat "smooth carrots" (peeled with a peeler before slicing) and not "rough carrots" (scraped with a knife).
