My Dc has been with his dad for a week (unusual) and I really struggle to get back into a routine with him after a long period apart

As regards to unethical pet ownership I loved animals as a child I had two mice and hamsters as an adult I think this was cruel as the hamster spent most of his nocturnal life trying to escape the cage . Just seems really cruel to me now. However I think my dog has a charmed life with us and do not think it is cruel at all.
