@Lottapianos silly question but how does it work ? Dp you lirtelry fill with water and freeze and put lid on ?

PerhapsaSillyQuestion · Yesterday 14:32

@MadisonAvenue that's gone to a crazy 39 here

It's very very different when you live in a country that expects this weather and it's like clock works. It's so unpreditable here isn't it .there is stuff happening next week ,school proms and so on that will be hard to enjoy in 39

henlake7 · Yesterday 15:36

I think countries that are used to these temps tend to go from air conditioned space to air conditioned space so they get some reprieve.
Alot of us though are looking at constant high temps with no relief, day or night. Thats what does me in, the fact its so unrelenting.
I plan on following my dogs example....find the coolest spot you can and doze the week away!😄

Fill with cold tap water, screw lid on, then freeze 😁 worked surprisingly well

Also certain medications (fluoxtine being one) really makes regulation of temperature difficult I feel like I over heat and not cool down without great difficulty.

WindyMillerDrinksCider · Yesterday 16:30

IMO heat in summer is like spiders. Love it in the garden but I don't want it in the house, especially in the bedroom when I'm trying to sleep.
The best thing I've tried is taping silver foil shiny side out over the glass sections of my front door which gets direct sun all day. It makes an amazing difference.
I already do all the other stuff but this extra thing is well worth it.

Just back from a hot city break and here are a few things I’ve observed.

  1. All public spaces, bars, etc have air conditioning. Obviously, the majority of us don’t, but perhaps we should? Currently trying to buy a portable unit for DC2 but they are sold out in Argos, JL, screw fix and the local currys. We purchased one (for us) a few years ago and it’s a God send in this heat.
  2. Windows, blinds and shutters (or curtains) closed from midday.
  3. Locals all wear full length clothing and don’t stand or sit out in the sun. No tiny shorts or spaghetti vests ( or sunburn!).
  4. Everyone walks really, really slowly. Nobody rushes. They all walk on the shaded side of the street. No one sits out in the park in full sun.
  5. People seem to drink a glass of water after every beer or coffee
  6. Evening meals are eaten when the temperature is cooling down.
  7. Everyone disappears between 2 and 6pm. It’s like a ghost town during this time. Where are they? Work, bar or having a siesta?
  8. Schools are breaking up now. They have long holidays in the summer.

Apologies to anyone who already knows this. We need to learn from our Mediterranean cousins.

This is not the thread for you.

plus people describing disgustingly hot weather as ‘glorious’ need to look up global warming.

They should be forced to live in one of these flats

Tower block residents left vomiting as heatwave sends homes to 35C

A local councillor says she fears someone will die in the stifling Sutton block

@henlake7 exactly there is going to be no reprive

Can I join?

I’m fat, peri menopausal and skin the colour of a milk bottle. I live in a sweatbox of a HA flat with excessive insulation (wonderful in the winter though) and no outside space. If I open the windows at the front, I get weed and screaming neighbours. If I open the windows at the back, I get weed and Grime music.

I fucking hate summer. If it wasn’t for the fact that some of these heat fans are fans simply because they’ve got nice big houses that don’t feel like an oven, and outside spaces, I’d be demanding seasonal house swaps with them.

overheating in HA flats comes under Awaabs Law.

Well (luckily) they've reduced it to 37c here on Wednesday, BUT now 39c on Thursday.

Is anyone feeling sick in this heat? I’m eating less but feeling nauseous. Drinking usual amounts. My DB and SIL are feeling sick too. No alcohol consumed. Was almost sick in my circuits class the other day (but new to the gym). And probably needed more water.

the80sweregreat · Yesterday 19:29

I was feeling ill earlier on, but the fan is doing its job and not too bad now. I tend to eat less in hot weather too.

Yep Constipation and piles since last Tuesday. Constant stomach pain and i had an accident earlier so got straight in the bath. Its fucking inhumane expecting ppl to live like this. Its the other end with me.

railcardfan · Yesterday 19:59

When I was a child a summer was considered hot if it was regularly 21 degrees (70 in Fahrenheit then). We'd hear stories of people who lived in hot cities in Southern Europe who had to move out for the whole of July and August because it was a crazily high temperature like 32 degrees (90F).

I can't believe that here in the UK I have actually been looking at rentals in Scotland for next summer, with the same idea in mind....

MoonlightMemories · Yesterday 20:10

A bit TMI....fair warning 😂. I don't know if anyone else here finds similar with gut conditions, but I've got IBS and the past couple of days it's been flaring up quite badly., even before the stress of finding out how hot it's going to be next week...this has happened before when the weather has gotten very hot. I've had plenty to drink but got an sudden bad increase in urgency and frequency compared to usual....like I don't already have enough to worry about with the upcoming extreme weather! 😥

For years people laughed at me , including my neighbour who told everyone I was the crazy one with tinfoil at my window. I used to block the sunlight, close all the curtains all day and avoid going anywhere if I could. Now it seems everyone is doing the same…

JenniferBooth · Yesterday 21:01

What about the storage of medication that has to be stored below 25c but not below 5c

JenniferBooth · Yesterday 21:40

You cant live a normal life
Cant put make up on ............concentrating makes me even hotter
Cant cook...............creates more heat Cant have the TV on. Have to keep an eye on the fridge freezer because it usually cant cope. Ditto the food stored in the hall cupboard. Cant keep food in the kitchen cupboard as it gets too hot Not everything is meant to be stored in the fridge and even if we tried it = even more pressure on the fridge freezer along with the heat.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Yesterday 22:26

I know the next week will be hell, but one consolation! It’s the summer solstice today so the days will start to get shorter. Shorter days, less sunshine!

ConstantlyFuriosa · Yesterday 22:28

I bought one of those silver spaceman heat reflecting blankets today. Am going to stick it on the outside of my west-facing back door and see if it helps.ideally I’d stick them on the outside of all of my west facing windows but it’s difficult because I’m surrounded by neighbours who might kick up a fuss about it. Hmm.

Not sick but as soon as the temperature reaches the low 20s I get a headache which nothing will clear until the temperature drops. I drink plenty of water, including adding an electrolyte tablet to one bottle, so it’s not dehydration.

Just looked at our area and it’s increased again this evening to 39° on Thursday.
It’s brutal.

I think anyone living in an HA property should put a photo of the temp up on Twitter copying in the HA and the press.
