@BooseysMom, I'm sorry to hear about your son. I hope you're home soon.

We can hear rumbling in the distance. No sign of a storm here yet though. The breeze has picked up / freshened, so it wouldn't surprise me if there is a storm. The forecast now says rain overnight (obviously now I've watered everything!), so we shall see.

HazeyjaneIII · 27/05/2026 22:35

sorry to hear the heat has triggered seizures with you @ScaredButUnavoidable , and your son @BooseysMom ... its a really scary thing to manage in this heat. I hope you are both OK.
Ds has struggled today with the heat, he said his legs and arms are aching... and I'm worried he's not drinking enough. His room is about 30 degrees, and I've just had to sneak in to open the window and lift off the duvet, as he will not sleep with it open, and wraps himself up like a mummy.
Looks like it will be cooling down here on Friday🤞🏻

Me cold in bed with the window wide open and the fan on

I'm boiling in bed. It's just started raining here, initially with a whoosh and then a bit lighter. There were a few distant flashes of lightning, but no more thunder (which also never amounted to anything).

saminamama · 28/05/2026 02:46

Roaring roaring storm here

NoWordForFluffy · 28/05/2026 03:00

We have a storm too. Really loud thunder when it was right above us. It's moved away now though. For now. The rain was biblical.

saminamama · 28/05/2026 03:11

This storm is awful here in the midlands. Home alone with 2 kids and luckily they have stayed asleep but my daughter is only 3 worried she will be scared

I'm in Wolverhampton, I loved the storm, but then I generally do.

I hope your children are still sleeping through.

Yes we were awake during the early hours here in the Midlands. The lightening was crazy then there was a ridiculously loud clap of thunder right overhead and I nearly had a heart attack!! I usually love a storm but this one was pretty scary. Heavy rain turned to hailstones about the size of walnuts!

I’m ok thank you. I have rescue drugs that I keep at home that I’m supposed to take when I have cluster seizures, but I’m also allowed to take one during vulnerable times (times of stress, illness, heat, lack of sleep as some examples) so I have occasionally been taking a tablet over the last few days just to try and prevent things from starting up.

I hope your son is ok and you have been able to get home.

Thank you to everyone else for your kind wishes too x

Thank you ScaredButUnavoidable and to everyone who posted about DS. We eventually were discharged and were at home when the mother of all storms struck!
He seems so much better today which is normal for him as his seizures come out of the blue. I thought staying awake last night wouldn't help but he's ok. A huge relief!
We don't have rescue drugs as yet as it's a recent diagnosis so we have to get him into hospital when this happens and they give him something to stop the seizure. The first time he went crazy after he had the one drug but this time he was more settled when they gave him a different one.
I'm happy to hear you're well too after such a bad heatwave.

ScaredButUnavoidable · 28/05/2026 08:30

We had a crazy thunderstorm here too overnight with hail stones!!!

Temps of 28-29c expected by early lunchtime again though ☹️

Lottapianos · 28/05/2026 09:41

So far so good in east London. Still got the cool breeze from yesterday, really hope it stays 🤞

It was SO NICE sleeping under the duvet with the windows shut last night!

cheezncrackers · 28/05/2026 10:30

Yesterday was 27 here, which was MUCH better and with a nice, cool breeze. Today the breeze is present again and the Met Office has adjusted the high from 32 to 30, which is very welcome. The temp atm is lovely tbh - warm and sunny with a breeze and the birds are twittering 💖

NoWordForFluffy · 28/05/2026 10:44

I'm just walking through the woods and it's very pleasant indeed! Lots of birds singing and the breeze means it's not too warm. Quite toasty when the breeze drops, mind you.

The poor dog was scared of the storm last night. Thankfully it didn't last long. I'm knackered today though after not enough sleep.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/05/2026 11:12

27 here now - high of 30

Just need to get through today, tomorrow is 25

How are we coping

I'm doing better than the beginning of the week

Dd has had enough though and is off her food

30 degrees in the flat. Didn't get much sleep due to thunder for three hours last night. (Shut the bloody windows so it wasn't as "cool" this morning when I finally woke up. (Cool being 28 degrees) Had another nap this afternoon after so little sleep. Woken to 30 inside and out. Going to open the windows in a minute or two when I am able to stand without toppling over. (Two conditions that make me wobbly, three if you include the heat!)

ScaredButUnavoidable · 28/05/2026 18:53

Currently 7pm and still 28c.

I’m so done with it now.

Thankfully it looks like tomorrow is only going to be 19-20c all day so I’m staying focused on that!!

VintageLane · 28/05/2026 21:21

I thought today was bearable in the SE.

Just been outside to water patio pots, cutting garden and greenhouse and it’s gorgeous. Warm, not hot.

Bless you, girl it’s tough

I do think that being able to keep the window open last night has definitely helped here 🥺

Fingers crossed for a better tomorrow

So after lots of reading and experimenting I personally found that shutting all windows and blinds/curtains during the day and then opening them wide at night when the air cooled really helped.

On top of this I opened the loft latch to give the hot air somewhere higher to escape to. I’m not a fan of sleeping with my bedroom door open but I begrudgingly did this too.

All of these things combined with a fan seemed to make the heat a little more bearable.

I did read somewhere about filling a hot water bottle 3/4 full and freezing it then having it in your bed is really good too as it takes a while to defrost. Haven’t tried it yet though.

'So after lots of reading and experimenting I personally found that shutting all windows and blinds/curtains during the day and then opening them wide at night when the air cooled really helped'

I get the logic of this but it sounds so miserable and gloomy! Does it not feel like you're living in a cave?
