I’ve tried carte d’or, too sweet, and Hagen daaz has a weird texture these days.

I just make homemade from a tub of double cream, add vanilla flavour and any additional fruit nuts chocolate, a small amount of sugar. Mix well and freeze.
Really nice and you only need a small amount.

I must admit a good old fashioned Mr Whippy does it for me 😊

Kelly's Vanilla Bean and Cornish Clotted Cream is gorgeous. They do a delicious Mocha flavour as well. We've only found them in Morrison's though. They're in cardboard tubs.

I'm just eating the vanilla one now! Very nice and has black dots in. My husband is on the raspberry cheesecake flavour which he says is very good too. They came in my Morrisons delivery this morning!

I must try the Sainsbury’s Make the difference one. I fancy making some too. How easy is it to do?

Squirrelchops1 · 22/05/2026 18:34

Joe's

Lidl vanilla ice cream their "posh" one, small rectangular tub.
Has flecks of vanilla through it. Very yummy.

Also do a mint choc chip and rum and raisin in same range.

Homemade is the best. Other than that, I do like Mackies despite the additives.

AndSoFinally · 22/05/2026 18:44

Joe’s, but only the fresh stuff from the parlour. The frozen stuff in Sainsbury’s isn’t as nice

SemmaLina · 22/05/2026 18:46

Tesco finest Madagascar vanilla ice cream is the best

I’ll have to try Mackies. Don’t think they do vanilla though

Yes, they do a very nice vanilla.

SpottyAlpaca · 22/05/2026 19:34

As an accompaniment to a pudding, eg chocolate fondant, Mackies.

To eat on its own, Haagen Dazs.

Hackney Gelato is good (from Ocado) and if you are in Dorset Baboo ice cream is amazing.

Agree about Baboo. The little booth at West Bay is a mandatory stop for me when I'm in the area!

I like that with a flake a 99

I just had some Jude’s vanilla very nice

English Lakes ice cream is the best.
I prefer plain rather than vanilla ice cream, so choose their double jersey variety, but they do a very good vanilla. Never mind vanilla, their sticky toffee pudding ice cream is beyond fabulous.

Amiable · Today 18:18

Kellies Cornish Clotted Cream definitely!

They do ! I have a tub in my freezer right now for my daughters ice cream milkshakes ! I don’t think much of it to be honest hence buying it for milkshake.
My absolute favourite ice cream is Colpis in Milngavie, Scotland, so probably not much help…

The thing is Kelly’s clotted cream is….clotted cream flavoured. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s not vanilla.

I grew up in the US and I have despaired for nearly 2 decades now about the lack of vanilla ice cream here. Everything is just cream flavoured, but no actual vanilla. I want specks of real vanilla bean in it like I grew up eating and that’s really hard to find.

Personally I think putting clotted cream into ice cream is a waste- you can’t taste it.
In Dartmouth in Devon shops sell ice cream cones with clotted cream on it , now you’re talking ! Salcomb Dairy 🤤

I still remember from over 50 years ago, a double scoop of Devon vanilla ice cream with a heavy dollop of ice cream on top.

Joe’s. They’re a small Welsh company, based In Swansea I believe. They sell it in Sainsbury’s here (I’m in Cardiff) but not sure if they sell it elsewhere. It is my favourite ice cream ever though. So good.
