I’ve tried carte d’or, too sweet, and Hagen daaz has a weird texture these days.

Yeo Valley or Jude’s

ScaryM0nster · 22/05/2026 16:18

For plain ice cream - mackies traditional. It doesn’t try to be vanilla.

For actual vanilla - Waitrose.

dennett’s ice cream from Lincolnshire. Reminds me of visiting my grandparents. I live in London so can’t get it.

Callestick Farm in Cornwall. Might be biased as I’m Cornish, but it’s bloody brilliant.

Hackney Gelato is good (from Ocado) and if you are in Dorset Baboo ice cream is amazing.

MsJinks · 22/05/2026 16:33

I do like Mackies, used to like it more - but for anyone near Sheffield then Our Cow Molly blows it out of the water - blows any ice cream out the water - it’s available at their farm in Dungworth - in comes/tubs there or a larger tub to take home - it is so popular- no added rubbish at all - unless you get Ferraro Rocher flavour I guess - I go for plain or sometimes lemon and ginger, which has actual lemon and ginger to flavour it. Amazing!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/05/2026 16:34

I’m not a fan of ice cream, but I only buy Mackies for the Gdcs - seems to have far fewer synthetic nasties than most.

Blundl · 22/05/2026 16:35

We just have Waitrose, M&S and Asda, nearby so can't get any of the nicer farmshop ice cream as it's not something that is easy to transport a long way.

MulberryFresser · 22/05/2026 16:37

Roskilly’s from Cornwall - wow.

Yep, I’ll go with that one too. Cracking.

Kelly's Vanilla Bean and Cornish Clotted Cream is gorgeous. They do a delicious Mocha flavour as well. We've only found them in Morrison's though. They're in cardboard tubs.

aintnospringchicken · 22/05/2026 17:11

Another vote for Mackies

Ooh you've got to make the journey to a big one, even just for the ice cream!

I think any ice cream would melt on the way back unfortunately!!

Jude's

KnittyKnotty · 22/05/2026 17:26

I really like Mackies Scottish ice cream (the one in a white tub not the usual round blue tub). I hate ice cream that turns into a solid lump that you need a chain saw to get into. This one actually scoops without tearing your bicep.

(I might have to go an get one now you've mentioned it 😆)

hexsnidgett · 22/05/2026 17:32

Argh. Now I want ice-cream.
Preferably Sainsbury blackcurrant which is the best ice cream ever.
I will settle for tesco finest, as I pass one on my way home and it is pretty damn nice.

hahabahbag · 22/05/2026 17:34

Kellys clotted cream, Sainsbury’s taste the difference vanilla or to be honest, I have an ice cream maker

PauliesWalnuts · 22/05/2026 17:36

Defiantly41 · 22/05/2026 13:23

Kelly’s Cornish clotted cream or Waitrose no 1 Madagascan vanilla

No. Let a tub of Kelly’s melt and you’ll soon change your mind. It separates into several sections of grossness.

Nonnim · 22/05/2026 17:44

Berthillon, if you happen to be in Paris. So much vanilla bean it’s almost grey.

Fantastic to see Roskilly’s mentioned before I did. I love their ice cream.

Another vote for Sainsbury’s TTD Vanilla

muddyford · 22/05/2026 17:57

Sainsbury's vanilla with clotted cream. May have to get some out of the deep freeze...

Another shout for Mackies. Not really vanilla flavoured but very delicious. They also do a caramel flavour with crunchy bits in which is AMAZING with sticky toffee pudding.

@mindutopia

When I lived in the USA we used to enjoy going to the Jersey Shore (New Jersey) and eating the yellow frozen custard on the boardwalks :)

There was/us a stand alone ice cream kiosk in Summit, NJ and I remember hot Summer evenings lining up with so many people to buy their ice cream (I liked the Butter Maple 🍁 flavour).

We also enjoyed going to the Cold Stone Creamery and choosing from the many mix-ins added to the ice cream on the cold marble stone ‘plate’.

My favourite ice cream ever (and I’ve been to Italy and had gelatos) was a Trader Joe’s own brand vanilla and lemon ice cream with tiny pieces of lemon zest - but sadly they discontinued it :(

dailyconniptions · 22/05/2026 18:04

Mackies is delicious but weirdly it's not even vanilla, just plain ice cream! But it's lovely and fresh tasting.

dailyconniptions · 22/05/2026 18:07

Mackies isn't vanilla. That's why.
