What’s the nicest vanilla ice cream?

I’ve tried carte d’or, too sweet, and Hagen daaz has a weird texture these days.

Another vote for Mackies here. It's very like the fantastic ice cream from the local Italian family run cafe when I was a child.

Personally I did not like Mackies at all. Kelly’s is ok but still lacking something. I am a real ice cream fan, I love trying new places. I make my own at home and mainly make vanilla as I love the little flecks of black in a proper vanilla ice cream. I have a raspberry one in the freezer now.

Another vote for Kelly's

Mackies. All the flavours, but the traditional one is so far above any competing (vanilla) ice cream that it ought to be in a class all of it's own.

Oh yes reminds me of the ice cream I had as a 70s kid😋😋
Rizzas of Huntly I used to help the Mannie if I saw him delivering to our local newsagent and he'd give me bashed choc Ices for helping.

spiderlight · 22/05/2026 14:42

Joe's. Absolutely no question about it. I'm not sure whether it's available outside South Wales, though, as it was originally a single parlour in Swansea and only did vanilla ice-cream.

The thing is Kelly’s clotted cream is….clotted cream flavoured. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s not vanilla.

I grew up in the US and I have despaired for nearly 2 decades now about the lack of vanilla ice cream here. Everything is just cream flavoured, but no actual vanilla. I want specks of real vanilla bean in it like I grew up eating and that’s really hard to find.

Yes I would like something very vanilla-y! Which US brands are good?

Unless you can get Cheshire Farm Ice-cream! Their vanilla is amazing. As are all the other flavours

I watched a comparison thing on YouTube the other day and the best ice-cream (as in the one with ingredients you would find in homemade ice-cream, with no additives) was Mackies.
When this one melted, it turned into a puddle, whereas the Walls, HaagenDas, Carte for all held their shape as they contained so many gums and stabilisers.

Mackies has gums and stabilisers. Haagen Dazs vanilla doesn’t, maybe you’ve mixed them up?

ThejoyofNC · 22/05/2026 14:45

I would very highly recommend you check out your local farm shop to see if they do homemade ice cream. Absolutely nothing from the supermarket compares to it and I've had it from a few different farm shops now, all have been lovely.

Love Mackies. It’s not actually vanilla though, it’s just milk flavour, which is why it’s so nice.

My father in law at 86 swears by this stuff -

Crikeyalmighty · 22/05/2026 14:49

Best ice cream I’ve ever had was what they call ‘soft is’ when we lived in Denmark, they dip it in cocoa powder - totally addictive and suprisingly reasonable too compared to everything else there.

Blundl · 22/05/2026 14:51

Kelly's though it's clotted not vanilla.

My favourite was Walls Cornish ice cream but I haven't seen it for a few years now, I look each summer for it.

goingtotown · 22/05/2026 14:51

Sainsbury’s Cornish.

aintnothinbutagstring · 22/05/2026 15:01

Not sure where people have got the idea Haagan Das has lots of extra stuff in it - literally the ingredient list of the vanilla is Fresh Cream (39.2%), Condensed Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Water, Egg Yolk, Natural Vanilla Flavouring. Its also gluten free which might be a bonus for some.

aintnothinbutagstring · 22/05/2026 15:07

Ingredients of Mackies - Whole Milk (62%), Whipping Cream (19%), Sugar, Milk Solids, Glycerine, Emulsifier (Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids), Stabilisers (Sodium Alginate and Guar Gum). Some people might prefer as its just 'white' ice cream, not vanilla flavoured.

shouldntbeonhereagain · 22/05/2026 15:30

If.you can get hold of it, Brickells.is hands down the best.vanilla,.in my opinion. Kelly's is ok,.but nothing special. I don't rate Mackie's vanilla- it just taste of cold milk

Gatekeeper · 22/05/2026 15:42

Mackies...bloody lovely

I wish I lived anywhere near a farm shop 😂

Duchy Organic for me from Waitrose. Good quality ingredients and no weird gums or emulsifiers in it.

Ooh you've got to make the journey to a big one, even just for the ice cream!

Olderbutt · 22/05/2026 16:04

We really don't like Mackies and would suggest Kelly's Cornish Ice Cream

cottagecheese1 · 22/05/2026 16:06

I've got Kelly's Vanilla Bean with Cornish Clotted Cream to try tonight. I'll report back later!

Appleandcidergravy · 22/05/2026 16:11

We like red lion farm vanilla, and bluebells vanilla ice-cream (both farm shops- one in Derbyshire the other Staffordshire).... I would agree to get a good ice-cream small dairies seems to be better...
I also find m&s Cornish quite nice (favourite is blackcurrant)....

SirChenjins · 22/05/2026 16:11

Kelly's definitely. Mackies is just so meh.
