A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Babylon5, I was following this at the time it was published and nothing came of it.

We talk about this government and it all being about the comms and they sure do manage the comms because and they use the comms to bury a story, as they did with this one.

Sir Keir Starmer’s team was kept in the loop about Labour Together’s “indefensible” investigation into the background of journalists who had written critical pieces about the loyalist think-tank, according to newly released documents.

The files showed that Morgan McSweeney, former chief of staff to the prime minister, was among the aides to Starmer who received updates on the progress of the probe in the run-up to the general election of 2024.

The revelation raises uncomfortable questions for Starmer and whether he knew anything about Josh Simons, one of his closest allies at the time, commissioning an investigation into the activities of journalists.

Simons was in February forced to step down as Cabinet Office minister after it emerged that in 2023, the think-tank paid US company APCO Worldwide more than £30,000 to “investigate the sourcing, funding and origins” of a Sunday Times story about undeclared donations to Labour Together.

FT

Good ol' Josh Simons who gave up his seat through pure altruism and for the good of the country.
I'm sure bollard will claim that it never crossed his desk.
Paul Ovenden also informed/involved according to other reports.

Angela Rayner was not available I guess.

This is a parody, yes?

I thought this might have been pulled together by the Crewkerne Gazette … but it seems not. Who the buggering bollocks thought this was a sensible idea?

I posted my thoughts about Gemma Collins earlier - now reading your comments, I think even more that might be what happened. It just doesn't make any sense otherwise.

@CruCru I thought that the scenes of Rachel Reeves being shouted at in the street might be AI - but it seems they're real as well

This mad world really unsettles me

@MNLurker1345 I'm not sure why you're suggesting retraining to these people but interested in the overall vibe of what you're saying?

I have noticed that trying to save money seems virtually abnormal now. Before any lurkers jump, that's obviously only if you can. But certainly I have had some weird conversations about it IRL. It's as if it's a cultural norm now to look for things to spend money on immediatelyrather than save it.

with my now notorious pub group, I feel really self-conscious about saying that I'm not attending other stuff - which they organise as well - because a lot of the time it's just too expensive. People can spend their money how they like. I have no issue with that. The first time I was in a post that was made redundant I was 25. Maybe that's got something to do with it.

I don't know - saving for a rainy day just doesn't seem to occur to people any more.

But then again, we live in a dumbed down world where it's also a cultural norm to watch programmes where people fake marriages with strangers... and it's apparently also normal to be accused of being snobby if you don't watch that kind of thing.

I don't understand anything! Have I become the old man shouting at clouds?!

MNLurker1345 · 20/05/2026 22:27

@SapphireCasino retraining because there is so much opportunity out there. I have a couple of young people in my family who have retrained in tech and one is screaming at her contemporaries to do the same. And she has ADHD. I also know in many cases it’s easier said than done.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves will on Thursday announce cut-price baked beans, free summer bus travel for children and £400mn of help for motorists and hauliers, in a wide-ranging package intended to win back voters after Labour’s electoral drubbing this month.

…lower prices for products including baked beans, marmalade, crisps, margarine, biscuits, chocolate and tomato ketchup.”

This is about demonstrating to punters we get it,” said one ally of the chancellor.

FT

That’s it Rachel, you are really smashing inflation - although you might want to give the NHS a heads up, given the unhealthy choices you are offering the ‘punters’ above…

Could this government be any more fucking daft???

Presumably because our Rachel knows what her core voter ‘punters’ want.

No avocado or organic kumquats for them.

Babylon5 · 21/05/2026 07:09

Elsewhere, the blind leads the blind….

Ed Miliband played a key role in advising Andy Burnham to commit to strict fiscal discipline if he becomes the UK’s next prime minister, news that will fuel Labour Party speculation that the energy secretary is positioning himself as a future chancellor.

Miliband has been offering economic advice to Burnham for some time and in recent days urged him to calm fears in the bond markets by backing the government’s fiscal rules, according to people briefed on the discussions.

Babylon5 · 21/05/2026 07:15

Last comment, and to add to your lexicon if I may…

One cabinet minister said of the recent UK political upheavals: “Ed was the wind turbine who fanned the flames of this.”

Miliband - the human wind turbine…

Avocados are precisely what her remaining few voters want… Anyone remember the thing about Mandeldom thinking mushy peas were guacamole?
It’s the Luxury Beliefs peoole who are still ‘virtue’ signalling.
I have an (ex) friend, British hugely wealthy retired to UK having made his pile in the US (California, natch) living in a quaint converted warehouse at Tower Bridge, doing a vanity Art for rich people course, pontificating on FBabout the ‘far right’ marchers invading London last weekend.. and deludely nostalgic for Labour.
The irony of the fact that his development displaced actual generations of working class is of course lost on him.
He was a good friend when e were students
Now I utterly despise him.
Luxury Beliefs.

From this morning’s Politico London Play Book:

”It goes without saying in a niche political newsletter … that Reeves’ efforts today will also be seen through the prism of her own political future, after her allies briefed she wants to keep the job after Starmer has departed.
And, well: Reeves made the case for her record in a speech to around 60 Labour MPs in No. 11 last night. She told them that the fall in inflation “only happened because of the decisions that I made in the budget last year” and that the government is “defying the odds and bucking the international trend” thanks to her decisions.
If you’ll have me, Andy: “I’m determined to continue doing that all through this year,” she said. “The work of government in the Treasury absolutely continues.”
Tick tock, prime minister: Reeves even launched her own TikTok last night to promote the buses policy. Her viral response to an abusive heckler hasn’t made it on there yet.”

Yep, its visible from space!
I read somewhere yesterday that she had backed Burnham in one of his previous attempts to become leader. Seems they have history.

Guidance requiring single-sex facilities to operate on the basis of biological sex will be published on Thursday, more than a year after a landmark Supreme Court ruling that clarified the law.

I’m a bit cynical about the timing.

After the local elections to field off the Green, but in time for the Makerfield by-election against Reform.

Not just Reform but Burnham’s stance that should be updated.

Well done and gratitude to the women who made it happen.

Babylon5 · 21/05/2026 09:17

And so it begins.

Wes Streeting has pledged to introduce a wealth tax if he is elected Labour leader in a fresh challenge to Sir Keir Starmer.
The former health secretary has pledged to reform capital gains tax by bringing it in line with income tax, in a move he says could raise £12bn a year.
Higher or additional rate taxpayers pay 24 per cent on gains they make in the current financial year. Under Mr Streeting’s proposal that would be equalised with the income tax rate of 40 per cent for higher rate taxpayers and 45 per cent for additional rate taxpayers.
It is the first major policy which Mr Streeting has set out since quitting the Government last week and demanding that the Prime Minister set out a timetable for his departure.
