A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The ‘ungovernable’ stuff is such a media / Labour line. It’s that they can’t govern and can’t do it without gaslighting.

It’s easy for people to see through it, most anyway.

Another Labour government triumph. Akin to the former Soviet Union.

The UK Treasury is pushing large supermarkets to introduce voluntary price caps on key groceries in return for lifting some regulations, according to four people familiar with the situation.

Supermarkets have reacted furiously to the proposals, under which grocers would agree to identify and cap the prices of essential goods such as eggs, bread and milk.

Edited

“Lost for words…. Never thought I’d see a British govt trying to set food prices” says the former head of the Institute for Fiscal Studies .

Government policy; higher employer NI, higher NMW, business rates pressure, energy policy costs, packaging waste regulations and healthy anti obesity policies have all contributed to the rise of food prices.

Alongside the war in Iraq, government policy directly impacts on rising UK food prices.

The government’s reactive approach is to now ask the supermarkets to cap the cost of essential items in return for delaying imposition of some of their policies. This government is renowned in the art of the U turn, one might be required now.

Anyone following the current ET hearing (Young v Manchester City Council) knows that the city is governed by a load of TRAs (it's a proper train wreck of a hearing as well...the evidence being given is 🤯). It's not really a surprise that the Mayor holds similar views.

A drop is good, we all want lower inflation. This drop links direct to the effects of the current energy cap phase.

The fact that the government is asking supermarkets to cap food prices, suggests a nervousness about the next inflation rate phase.

On the jet fuel from Russia issue Labour shouldn’t have tried so hard to close 20% of refineries

Since taking power, two of the UK's six refineries—Grangemouth and Lindsey—have closed.

Due to net zero taxes.

Upstartled · 20/05/2026 08:32

Phillipson has her nose to the grindstone fixing the shit storm that is our current education system. Or, at least, I think that's the vibe we are meant to be getting from her sketch show with non-parent Gemma Collins who is cos playing a school girl...?

@justasking111 Exactly! Some body has to pay for it.

The government is obviously reacting to the current international crisis and our weak economic position, we are therefore in crisis management phase.

State intervention in supermarket food pricing is not really where we should be heading. But with the CoL crisis apparently some think there should be, according to this morning’s Politico.

I had a job application like this. Sat down with a friend who had a PhD in gobbledegook filled it in and got the job. There's a lot of ex law students in HR these days.

Another friend gets an agency to tweak her CV. She's had success that way.

Having followed the Lorna Young v Manchester Council employment tribunal for the last few days (and many previous ones involving the public sector) it is clear this sector is packed to the gills with non-jobs on very big salaries.
Seeing these people regularly skewered in the witness box is eye-opening; they seem to be director of this, and lead of that, but do not seem to achieve anything of value (apart from witch hunting sensible women, which I’m sure they find valuable given the enthusiasm they show for it).

Huge amount of buck passing goes on in these tribunals, with nobody taking personal responsibility for anything; they get away with it as there are so many layers of bureaucracy that nobody knows exactly what they do!
HR appear to be some of the worse culprits; whilst having plenty of time on their hands to investigate colleagues’ perfectly legal tweets and other social media posts, they don’t appear to have enough time to properly disclose any documents relevant to the case.

Really, WTF is this job?! ‘Director, Inclusive Economy'

Absolutely damning. This is what he really thinks of women:

'I don't want to see people standing up for trans rights and people supposedly standing up for women's rights arguing on the streets of Manchester. That's not what we're about.'

I'm furious at the decision to loosen sanctions on Russia. They have zero fucking principles. 🤬

2% when they took office, 3.8% after a year of Labour.

To answer myself and @BIossomtoes . I see the main reason for the fall is due to the energy price cap...but we are on oil...which is still the most expensive I have ever known it. Coupled with petrol prices, I was indeed surprised.

Upstartled · 20/05/2026 10:07

If inflation dropped as a result of the energy cap that that is a very artificial measure. The cap for the current energy prices were set three days before the Iran war using the the wholesale price on the 17th February, giving us a domestic rate cap of 24.67p/kWh energy and 5.74p/kWh for gas.

The new rate will be set in a week and will kick in July 1st. The standing charges are expected to increase and the rate predictions increase to 26.03p/kWh electricity and 7.16p/kWh gas.

The gas will be what bites if we don't see a reduction in wholesale prices by the next round of changes.

That might be too rational for some ;

Labour are still all over the place, fighting each other and damaging jet fuel production here so they need the Russian type.

SionnachRuadh · 20/05/2026 10:36

If "abruptly leaves post" is code for "spoke to Tim Shipman", there won't be many people left in government.

Nuthatch26 · 20/05/2026 10:47

CaveMum · 20/05/2026 10:33

Very strange story here. The wording of “abruptly leaves post” implies something serious.

The Guardian suggesting that this has something to do with the investigation into the leak from the national security council, ie Keir Starmer wanting to allow US immediate use of airbases, but being overruled by others in cabinet.

Emily Thornberry has come out against this today.
I think this will be the topic at PMQs.

With the department of education and the Gemma Collins thing - I've heard someone say that it's good PR because they're promoting various schemes and they need somebody who didn't do the traditional education route.

Obviously, I understand that PR takes many forms. Generally, the Labour government seem to be spectacularly bad at it - so unless I see something more than a short video clip, I'm not convinced by this

It seems more likely that somebody in government called in a favour - that they know Gemma and she agreed to do a bit of work for them?

Very good PMQs from Kemi.
Starner trying to deny loosening sanctions on Russian oil.

Karl Turner knifed Starmer for the briefings against him and smears about his mental health.
