Help me feel better about not buying the lovely new SUV that will cost me £620 per month including finance, insurance and road tax?

Nissan

My credit is poor

I currently own an 19 Nissan micra

I want so badly to drive an suv, and signed up to the contract

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

😭

Well done for backing out. You’ve made a sensible adult decision.

Everyone’s got a SUV on the school run. It couldn’t want one less. It seems overkill and for some of the brands, I sure wouldn’t want to spend stupid amounts on repairs either on top of the high costs. it’s true that after a few weeks you’re just driving this big metal pile of debt (with a disgustingly high interest rate)

When I bought my first “newer” car, I did look at the monthly deals. When you’re caught up in that excitement, you can’t see the realities of “what if something in my circumstances changes?”

I eventually saw the light, stashed as much cash I could every single month. It didn’t actually take as long as I thought because I was so focused. I was so proud of myself. No interest. Walked into the forecourt and paid (the guys clearly didn’t expect me to pay cash and it was satisfying 😂)

@NotMajorTom oooh handbag. Fair enough I missed the the decimal point while reading on my phone. But seriously that is about an 8- 10 min walk, many people walk that from parking paces.

I stand by finances comment - someone on £3k per month with bad credit contemplating spending £700 a month on a big car to impress the neighbours is no good with money

OP is disabled so your snippy comments about being able to walk that distance are pretty unfair.

Op has taken advice on board and made a different decision. That’s a good thing. You scoring cheap points says more about you than them tbh

You’re on a roll!

Thank you 😞

OP… I’m really happy you’ve cancelled. I have had my car for 10 years and he is 16 years old. I never planned to replace him, but my Mum has been diagnosed with horrid illness, and she lives 3 hours away, so I’ve had to get a new one as mine was getting unreliable…. As a PP said, the first couple of weeks was fab! Sheeny shiny snd new! But… it really is just a mode of getting from A to B… and, having been crap with money in the past- and not particularly great now….. I PROMISE YOU that even your most desired car in the world is NOT worth the dread of those payments going out each month.

Do you know what I would do? I’ve seen similar suggestions, I think.. but, I’d put the loan amount into a separate ring fenced savings account, not touch it, and, after a year, 6 months or so, revisit the issue…… and, I guarantee you will be SO relieved you didn’t get the SUV! And, at that point, use some of your “ bonus” money to treat you and your lovely DC to a cool weekend away, or that new carpet!! 🥳

Good Luck!!🍀 💋

Thank you xx

Yes i will be saving the money. I WILL own an SUV but 720 per month was insane, I see it now. And I hope to get the carpets done this year! I went to Tapi yesterday to get inspired lol

I wish you and your mum the best, sorry she is unwell x

Well done OP, I'm sure you're disappointed but I think you made the right decision. I go through phases of wanting a new car and then I think 'no im going to get my moneys worth out of the car I have' which is no way flashy but easy to drive. All we need is something reliable to get us from a to b. We didnt have a car when I was young so it's still a novelty to me.

Same re not having a car growing up

My current micra is my first x

I have an invisible disability and and 8-10 minute walk would land me in bed for a week on a good day and in ICU on a bad day. A car is often someone's mobility vehicle even if they don't qualify for PIP

DancingNotDrowning · 16/05/2026 22:03

This is absolutely the best decision.
how often do you drive? Every day or do you just need the car for the food shopping and trickier journeys?

£620 can pay for a lot of taxi trips and may be a viable option if you’re not having to do multiple trips per day. Not having the commitment of a loan repayment is very freeing

FairyBatman · 16/05/2026 23:12

Well done @sadaboutcar26you’ve made the best decision. The money that you would have spent on the car can go towards your debts and a treat for you and DC.

Velvian · 17/05/2026 08:58

@sadaboutcar26 , really pleased you made the sensible decision. Seeing as your Micra no longer excites you, why don't you go 1 step further and pay it off, sell it and buy an older car outright with the proceeds?

It will give you even more income to put in the savings pot for a better car that you own 100%.

UtterlyUseless · 17/05/2026 09:04

Op start to research the FIRE movement ,even if you don't end up trying FIRE ,it's good grounding around money.
Also look into classic investing books or audio books like the pyscology of money.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 17/05/2026 11:47

Not a loser to use a car until you need to change it. Not a loser to secure your finances.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 17/05/2026 11:56

Well done OP.

Money stress and worry about debts is awful.

You've made the best decision for yours and DS future stability.
