Help me feel better about not buying the lovely new SUV that will cost me £620 per month including finance, insurance and road tax?

Nissan

My credit is poor

I currently own an 19 Nissan micra

I want so badly to drive an suv, and signed up to the contract

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

😭

At that interest rate you’d be no worse off buying the bloody thing on a credit card. That’s utterly extortionate, and as another poster has said is the equivalent of them telling you to fuck off.

Cancel this contract. You do not need an SUV nor do you need to keep up with the proverbial Jones’s.

Yeah this is the smart thing to do

Plus I could buy new carpets

Thrilling

Or you could not make any expensive purchases at all, live within your means, save as much as you can and start to get in a better financial situation.

viques · 15/05/2026 10:08

And the minute you drive off the forecourt in a brand new car its value drops. You forgot to factor in depreciation into your costs. You might as well stand in the street and give away money. Cancel the agreement and look out for a two year old car. Same car, huge saving.

This is a 2 year old car 🤯.

zingally · 15/05/2026 10:22

Are decisions like this the reason you have poor credit?

Honestly, £720 a month for a CAR is bonkers!! And £120 a month for insurance?? Where on earth do you live? Mine is about £350 for a YEAR.

Your current 19 plate car should be absolutely fine for a few more years yet. How about you put that £720 a month in savings, and by the time the 19 plate dies, you'll have more than enough to buy a 2-3 year old car outright.

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 15/05/2026 10:29

Respectfully, that’s a lot to pay for a dime a dozen shitbox. I’m all for the joy of buying a nice car and understand the SUV craze. I used to hate them (have had a few and always go running back to an estate) but am currently driving one as a hire after a big smash and it’s won me over. Think of the holidays and carpets you can get.

the novelty will wear off when the first bill comes and you can get a very nice car for less if you shop around.

DancingNotDrowning · 15/05/2026 10:37

This is insane. 20% of income on a car???

GingerBeverage · 15/05/2026 11:01

sadaboutcar26 · 15/05/2026 00:52

No, just got no no claims bonus

So when did you last have a claim?

Toddlergrumps · 15/05/2026 11:10

I’d love a new car, at the moment I have a 8 year old estate (paid off). I would love a newer smaller car that’s easier to park, but we’d still need the estate for the dog and pram. At the moment DH share the car and we probably spend £80 a month on taxis when one of us has it. I priced up a fiat 500e and it would be about £350 and I decided against it as it is a vanity buy not something I need.
Instead I’ve decided to put the £350 into savings to see if we can afford it, I can then use it to change the estate or maybe take DS to Disney. In 2 years I’ll have over £8500 with interest. It really put it into perspective for me.

You don’t need a car if you live in inner London FFS. Especially not a planet and people killing car like that. Get a bike or get on the tube.

Me and dc are disabled, we do honestly need a car

So you'd paying £30,000 for a £17,000 car, which by the time it was paid off would be worth between £7,000 and £9,000, according to a quick Google.

Read that again. You'd be paying £15,000 in interest. Almost as much as the car is worth now. Then by the time you'd paid it off, it would be worth less than one third of what you'd paid.

Another poster alerted me to this, so came back to find you

Thank you.

Glad you are taking everyone's comments on board OP.
Buyong a car outright is so much cheaper and feels so much better. I'm currently driving a 15 year old car and saving for my next which will be around 4-5 years old when I buy it which is apparently optimum time for lower depreciation but still new enough.

Get yourself a written budget you can stick to and get your debt cleared, then save for a car. Depending on their age, involve the kids in the conversation too. You have a valuable lesson to teach them here.

I looked at my dc last night - fwiw I didn't sleep thinking this over - and realised this is a choice for me. They dont care about a panoramic sun roof but enjoy going out

That is a fortune for a mediocre car. Do you own the Micra yet? How would you have to pay to own the Micra.

I would be tempted to borrow very short term to pay it off, then sell it to buy a larger, older car. My car is 11/12 years old now and still relatively new feeling and good to drive.

5k to own the micra

Had a similar deal on the micra but it was at least affordable

Is it an EV, is that why it's so expensive, We have a 21 plate X-Trail which was quite reasonable price, that's why we got it to tow the caravan. Nissan are not a luxury car, probably similar to Ford, how is it so expensive. I definitely wouldn't buy it.

Petrol

But its an automatic which was a big draw as my current is a manual and its a nightmare on hills

£500 for a used Nissan, no one will be impressed by that my love, if you cancel it and improve your credit rating you could probably get a Range Rover for that kind of money in a couple of years.

Thank you 😞

You have kids that’s a massive holiday you could take them on instead of a car. That they won’t care about.

Thank you, youre right x

I get how you feel. I live in a very nice area and people have very fancy cars. I have a car similar to yours because I live in zone 2, don’t really need a car so it’s cheap to run.

A couple of people in my work are very car-oriented and actually laugh at my car. It stings but I hold my nerve because being financially secure is extremely important to me. One of the “laughers” drives around in a mercedes but can barely afford to get into work and is regularly in tears because of their financial situation.

Whenever they poke fun I remind myself that I’m in a good place because of the sensible decisions I’ve made and as a result I’m mortgage free and live a worry-free life.

Please don’t make your life harder for yourself.

Thank you x

When someone is driving an SUV I instantly think they have an attitude problem.
£620 a month is enough to get chauffeured to work- it's a huge amount, unless you are high net worth.

sadaboutcar26 · 15/05/2026 11:43

Donnersons · 15/05/2026 07:16

I did this once, a number of years back. Forked out a large proportion of my monthly income to buy a gorgeous car that I loved driving around in. The rate would have been similar to yours. I was sooooo happy with it.

Until I reversed into a bollard and couldn’t afford to replace the panel so had to drive around with a huge dent in my perfect, impressive expensive car.

Then, because of my history of not looking after my money (credit rating), it eventually caught up with me and I started to fall behind on the payments. And when your monthly repayment is that high, once you’ve missed one you’re an absolutely fucked, to put it politely. I’ll save you the details, but ultimately I got woken up at 7am one day to 3 bailiffs and tow truck outside my house.

That was a long while ago and I’m debt free now, not a single penny other than mortgage but it was an awful time that made me very ill, all because I wanted to have a nice car.

Ironically these days I drive a second hand, automatic (and slightly battered) Qashqui. But I own it - not the bank. You have no idea how nice it feels knowing I don’t have to worry about that monthly payment, particularly in this fucked up economy.

I totally get how you feel OP, but don’t do it.

Thank you very much - glad you're doing better now - hoping for the same for me x

Absolutely no chance _ I drive a qashqai, its an 18 plate, I do it (its not auto though, nor does it have a sunroof) I've just had 4 years of paying £200 a month for it. Now its paid off I'll keep it another 4 years or so - it'll be around 12 years old by then, and then it'll be traded in towards a 3/4 year old car.

I look around at the school gates and see all range of cars, from small aygos to big porsches. What we have works for us, couldn't care what works for anyone else - that's what you need to work on, your realisation that what you have works for you, stop playing the social media 'everyone has more than me' game

£2400 a year in car insurance-that’s insane! Have you got lots of points/crashes/only just passed your test?

First car, had it for 3 years

Had an accident last year and lost my no claims

Watch some youtube channels where financially savvy people tell financially unsavvy people how easily they waste their money on new cars. They’ll also give you advice on how to use the money you save more wisely.

managingexpectations · 15/05/2026 11:52

That’s the same as my mortgage! 😱
what I will say is I had a qashqai for a month as a courtesy car and I couldn’t wait to get my Kia stonic back. I really didn’t enjoy driving the qashqai despite loving it and wanting one the day it was dropped off. On longer drives it was very uncomfortable and just felt a bit rickety!
you’ll be able to find a better car for far less if you shop around

benten54 · 15/05/2026 07:49

The Micra would be my badge of honour. Where I live now shit bashed up cars are the norm (near the sea, unmade roads, crap drivers, potholes, loose livestock). People can have massive houses and boats but gad about in a dented 20 year old Toyota Vitz. We drive an ‘on its last legs’ dented and scraped Nissan Leaf. A big new shiny car in these parts makes people look like a gauche try hard or a real estate agent.

And kindly how can a car be a ‘lifeline’ when you live in central London? I knew one person with a car in London (all high earners) and they got rid of it last year. It take an ice age to get anywhere! Genuinely curious.

Fwiw i'm in a wealthy area, all the cars are new and suv types

I’m also intrigued where in inner London she lives which means everyone has an SUV? Parking alone in inner London is virtually impossible. I live in zone 2, and hardly anyone here has a car. Also, surely having an SUV in London is more of a hindrance, size wise?
