Help me feel better about not buying the lovely new SUV that will cost me £620 per month including finance, insurance and road tax?

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

If you save up aggressively for a year and clear your debt you can probably get a brand new one cheaper than the quote you have now for a 2 year old one.

Honestly (and I really don’t mean this in a mean way) but it’s wanting it now that’s likely trashed your credit in the first place. Yes this as a chance to practise putting things off until you can afford them and promise yourself a new one as a reward when you get to the point that you can really afford it.

Thank you x

I would have paid someone that much to take my QQ away by the end!
It was the worst car I have ever driven. Hated it.

But those saying you don't need a car in London - you do realise that Londoners do leave London? And as others have said - kids, shopping, buggies, school/sport equipment aren't easy on a packed tube, or when the second full bus drives past the stop without stopping. When each child needs to be somewhere different in opposite directions? And much of South London is nowhere near a tube?

Just want to highlight this - people very much do need a car in london, just like everywhere else.

I done similar when I had a car crash and my old car was wrote off. Not quite the amount you were talking about but approx £420 overall for a 5 year old car. When things went wrong with the car, money was extremely tight to get them fixed. Honestly I’d save like heck and save a larger deposit for a car whilst working on your credit file.

Mine was pretty poor following the breakdown of my marriage hence why I was so expensive for the car. Is there anything that could be a quick fix on your credit file via a settlement? Or are there any nearing stay barred? Any sort of ccj? Working on these will help a lot ☺️

No ccjs etc just falling behind on payments

Thank you x - And I hope youre doing better now after your marriage breakdown

What % of your net income is it?

About 33k a year

Not sure what percent it is, sorry

I’d never pay that for any car, £300 absolutely maximum and I’d begrudge that, sooner spend it on holidays than something that spends 90% of the day stationary

It seems to me that there are three possibilities here.

  1. This entire post is fictitious
  2. The OP needs a serious look at their priorities if having the 'wrong' car mades them cry
  3. The OP has some serious stuff going on in their life that is too big to deal with and so they are focussing on the car non-issue instead

OP, if it's 1 or 2, stop being ridiculous. If it's 3 you have my sympathy: please see your GP and get some help.

Your post is mean but yes, ive been in my head a little

Still ive seen the light and have chosen my babies

@sadaboutcar26 I know you've already come to your senses (and good for you)!

But, I don't know if you've realised this, but Nisan SUVs often rank as some as the most un-realiable SUV (nearly as bad as Range Rover/Land Rover). If you do every want to upgrade to an SUV and financially viable to do so, I would strongly encourage you to go for one that is reliable. It's one thing to pay out a fortune on a car when it's going to last a lifetime and have no issues, but quite another if it's going to cost a small fortune to upkeep.

Where i am everyone has massive suv's and i'm just there with my dc in the micra 😞

So? I have really changed my way of thinking the last few years, I used to want and have the cars…now, when I see people in these type of cars, I just often think how silly, I know many of them are paying what your thinking of and in a ton of debt. Meanwhile my car is paid off, and I’m thinking of selling it and buying an old crappy cheap 4x4 as that’s what I need! I don’t give 2 shits anymore about what people think, I paid off a huge lump sum off mortgage last year, will do the same this year, and I’ve now got zero debt (bar mortgage obviously) and trust me…that’s way more satisfying, and you sleep better at night, than having an expensive car sat outside. Don’t let insecurity make you get ripped off and in debt for the rest of your days x

wherearethesnacks · 15/05/2026 13:00

I don't think a Qashqai is an SUV, is it? It's just a perfectly average car.

Op I know it feels bad but this is absolute right thing to do.

fwiw I love cars. Spend a lot on them and enjoy them, but at times in my life I couldn’t afford to do that so I didn’t. Lots of posters have pointed out how expensive a decision this really was (the real cost to you) and I’m pleased you have heard all that, and for now realise that more debt for something shiny is not sensible right now.

i can also say that a few months or years of managing with what you can afford makes a huge difference to reducing debt or building up savings. Future you will thank you for doing this.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 15/05/2026 13:16

I know a woman who had a Range Rover on finance and was so proud of that car. Her husband had an industrial accident and was self employed with no insurance. Then the war in Ukraine started and costs skyrocketed. She tried her best but within 3 months the car was repossessed and they were left in a massive amount of debt. There is no joy in having depreciating assets that you cannot afford, it is miserable in the long run. Live within your means and be proud of yourself for doing so!

We are disabled

Fwiw i'm in a wealthy area, all the cars are new and suv types

But I agree, i just can't afford it 😞

Have you looked at claiming disability benefits?

When you do need to change it may be possible to get a car through Motability

Petrol

But its an automatic which was a big draw as my current is a manual and its a nightmare on hills

Edited

I've driven a manual my entire driving life (around 20 years now) and have never had a problem on hills, really not sure what you mean by that?!

I am a five min drive from Muswell. Look out for me in my scratched ten year old red Polo. I honestly don’t care about cars. Enjoy your Micra! Much easier to park on Princes Avenue ;-)

Am glad you have phoned to cancel and I hope that goes ahead.
If you are starting to fall behind on payments you need to take action, that is when things can spiral scarily fast. Either CAB or step change may be able to help you sort out a repayment plan, CAB may also be able to advise or help with disability benefit applications.

Hill starts can be a bit scary! I much prefer an automatic for the same reason.

Papyrophile · 15/05/2026 16:55

Save the money every month for a year and buy a second hand one outright. It will improve your credit score too!

I doubt they would be able to assist if OP doesn’t meet PIP criteria in order to qualify for Motability.

Don’t do it!
I had a brand new top of the range Nissan qashqai which I purchased in 2021, it was around 39k and with a £500 deposit and 36 monthly payments of £420, with a balloon payment at the end. My interest rate was 4.3%, how is yours so high?!

I have paid it off now due to having some spare money and I must say it’s so nice to be away from car finance. Please think long and hard about this, don’t get yourself in debt for the sake of a car.
