My credit is poor

I currently own an 19 Nissan micra

I want so badly to drive an suv, and signed up to the contract

I know what I SHOULD do but I want this car

Work out how much it would cost you in interest over the period of agreement, then work out what happens at the end of the purchase period when you can't pay the final balloon payment. Add on the interest you are playing on other loans / credit.

Take than monthly amount.. and
1: pay off existing debt
2: Save 3xMonthly Salary
3: Pay 15% of your income into your pension
4: now save for an SUV..

AreBearsCatholic · 15/05/2026 08:20

What would you rather, an actual SUV enchanted so that everyone except you saw it as a Micra, or a Micra enchanted so that everyone except you saw it as an SUV?
If it’s the latter, don’t make a horrible financial decision to impress materialistic people. You also may find others judging you for having an antisocial SUV.
If it were a Nissan Figaro you wanted I would completely understand.

The moment you drive that car away it will depreciate in value even more, so you’ll be effectively throwing money away really.
If your micra can get you from A to B then that’s all you need until you can afford to pay for the car outright. Save that £720 every month and buy something outright.

Dahliadaily · 15/05/2026 08:24

Absolutely nuts and a crappy car. You can lease a Tesla or other EV for £400 a month and pay a tiny fraction for fuel.

honeylulu · 15/05/2026 08:27

Good lord, I'm thanking my lucky stars that I have near enough zero interest in cars. I drive and have a 13 year old little runaround, reliable, does the job and costs barely anything, ulez exempt etc. Insurance last time was £272 for the whole year! Most of our neighbours have SUV type cars but if you asked me what make/model or how old I wouldn't have a clue because I neither notice nor care. They still talk to me and smile and invite me to their drinks parties so it hasn't made me an outcast.

I earn a good salary and have paid off mortgage (keep quiet about this) but don't care if people think I'm poorer than I am. In my experience if people think you've got money they ask to borrow some haha. No thanks.

You have kids! There will be much more important things to spend money on than a 700 a month car just so you can have a sunroof and crap like that. I've just paid off my son's student loan. Now THAT felt good!

sadaboutcar26 · 15/05/2026 00:31

Not like its a range rover eh

Well they are just as vile!
29% are you fucking mad! A poor credit rating are you double mad!
OP bottom line is you can't afford what you want BUT if you build your credit rating, pay off debts and stop being silly with money you will be able to afford nicer things in a few years.

Secretsquirrelshh · 15/05/2026 08:28

I had a Qashqai and it was shit. Something was always going wrong. Never been so glad to see the back of a car.

Figcherry · 15/05/2026 08:30

@honeylulu agree. Our Toyota is 15 years old. We could buy a brand new car tomorrow with cash but I wouldn't waste my money.
Cars are just a means of getting from A to B imo.

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 15/05/2026 08:31

I get it, I’m desperate for a decent car but £700 is completely out of my realm of possibilities- I’m looking at £300 options and it’s still difficult.
I wouldn’t recommend doing this (but totally get why you might)

waterSpider · 15/05/2026 08:41

This is a really interesting point at which to think about your approach to money and finances. For that kind of money you could take a lot of taxis and ubers.

Cruise control in central London? Might work for a few dozen metres before you hit traffic.

ViciousCurrentBun · 15/05/2026 08:42

I could do with an SUV as we live on the edge of The Peak District and those hills sure do get slippy but I don’t have one.
@Figcherry Same, we don’t because DH car has that road tax that was available for a time so we only pay £20 PA so he refuses to change.

My mate has a 60k plus car and pays £400 PA road tax.

UniquePinkSwan · 15/05/2026 08:44

You’re making a mistake posting on here about cars. Unless you drive a 20 year old clapped out car, it’s a waste of money.

Seeline · 15/05/2026 08:44

Secretsquirrelshh · 15/05/2026 08:28

I had a Qashqai and it was shit. Something was always going wrong. Never been so glad to see the back of a car.

I would have paid someone that much to take my QQ away by the end!
It was the worst car I have ever driven. Hated it.

But those saying you don't need a car in London - you do realise that Londoners do leave London? And as others have said - kids, shopping, buggies, school/sport equipment aren't easy on a packed tube, or when the second full bus drives past the stop without stopping. When each child needs to be somewhere different in opposite directions? And much of South London is nowhere near a tube?

McGregor33 · 15/05/2026 08:46

I done similar when I had a car crash and my old car was wrote off. Not quite the amount you were talking about but approx £420 overall for a 5 year old car. When things went wrong with the car, money was extremely tight to get them fixed. Honestly I’d save like heck and save a larger deposit for a car whilst working on your credit file.

Mine was pretty poor following the breakdown of my marriage hence why I was so expensive for the car. Is there anything that could be a quick fix on your credit file via a settlement? Or are there any nearing stay barred? Any sort of ccj? Working on these will help a lot ☺️

Soontobe60 · 15/05/2026 08:46

I have a lease SUV car - it’s a Peugeot 2008 GT, 75 plate (abut brand new in March ‘26) and I pay £250 pm. No tax - as it’s new, insurance is about £350pa.
You’re being ripped off.

Wordsmithery · 15/05/2026 08:47

I can see why you have a poor credit rating if this is something you're even considering doing. You need to learn some financial smarts!
If you're really desperate for a bigger car then put £400 aside each month. In four years you'll have £19k and will be able to buy a second hand car for cash. (Or three years and you'll have somewhat less, etc.) It's such a brilliant feeling when you've saved up for something you really want and finally buy it.
Try not to get car envy in the meantime. Tell yourself that bigger cars guzzle fuel and you can't pop them into tiny spaces to park. I LOVE my little car.

sadaboutcar26 · 14/05/2026 23:54

I know that youre talking pure sense.

My heart just wants this beautiful automatic qashqai with the sun roof and cruise control

Qashqais are so ugly! They're definitely not beautiful..
Ultimately both cars do exactly the same, get you from A to B. This from someone who owns a 61 plate fiesta and a 16 plate Passat.

Balloonhearts · 15/05/2026 08:48

Maybe I'm not understanding how this works but 29% of 17000 is nearly 5k! Fuck that for a lark! That's the sort of quote we give people when we really don't want to lend to them and hope they aren't stupid enough to accept it.

Shouldbedoing · 15/05/2026 08:49

If you are already driving a 7 y o Nissan it has a long life ahead of it!

eatreadsleeprepeat · 15/05/2026 08:49

sadaboutcar26 · 14/05/2026 23:43

Car costs a bit less than 17000

Interest rate of 29% plus a fixed percent amount that i'm not sure of

60 months - 500 per month hire purchase

Road tax cost is the same

Edited

Stop for a few moments, forget the delight of driving an SUV and think. 29% apr!!!!!!! Car cost £17k. 60 months at £500 comes to £30k you will be spending.
Ignoring the bets for a moment if you put £500 per month in a savings account you would have £6000+ at the end of the year. That could be a deposit towards a different car. Or towards clearing debts.

sadaboutcar26 · 14/05/2026 23:53

Where i am everyone has massive suv's and i'm just there with my dc in the micra 😞

Do not do this to keep up with what everyone else has u will not be happy !!!
I have just downgraded to a fiat 500 and I am literally zipping about everywhere !!!
Get a car that will make u happy because it what u want and price it with what u can easily afford without any added stress !
I had a fancy car and I never drove it lol 😁
I even got money back when I part exchanged !! Buck the trend of having bigger cars there also a nightmare.park !!!!

Jamesblonde2 · 15/05/2026 08:53

What % of your net income is it?

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 15/05/2026 08:56

benten54 · 14/05/2026 23:51

If you live in inner London you don’t need a fancy car! The micra does fine. When I lived in zone 2 10 years ago my monthly income was 3x yours and we didn’t even have a car! Give yourself a big shake.

Edited

We lived in London 20 years and only took the car out once a week, why would you spend so much on a car when you live on London ?

NotPrimrose · 15/05/2026 08:56

It seems to me that there are three possibilities here.

  1. This entire post is fictitious
  2. The OP needs a serious look at their priorities if having the 'wrong' car mades them cry
  3. The OP has some serious stuff going on in their life that is too big to deal with and so they are focussing on the car non-issue instead

OP, if it's 1 or 2, stop being ridiculous. If it's 3 you have my sympathy: please see your GP and get some help.
