Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Arkady for a boy. My mother nearly named me Merewinna and suggested Ambrosia if we had a girl.

I went through a phase of being convinced we should call her Boudicca. She’s very grateful we didn’t 😂😂

My dd is quite put out we decided against this name for her.

She has some rather outlandish names planned for a girl but very staid and conventional names for a boy. Should she ever have dc one day:)

Malachy
Bronwyn
Lola

Malachy is a beautiful name, and quite popular in Ireland.

When I was pregnant with my first I saw a very old Disney movie with a rooster in it called Chanticleer and that was the name i was going with, boy or girl.

I was adamant I was using it right up to the day of my induction and the midwife asked had I any names and a wave of embarrassment came over me trying to explain the name. I thought thats never happening again and I named him a regular name.

Edited

😂😂 there have been some hideous/funny ones on here but…Chanticleer!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 14/05/2026 06:06

Our DD has 3 longish forenames, and before going to the registrar, we'd sort of decided that she should have 4, the last being Ornette(male jazz musician. Not even DHs favourite Jazz musician. I dont like jazz). The registrar looked at me, sighed and said, sorry there isnt enough room on the certificate.DD is very grateful.("What the fuck were you thinking? Were her exact words)
My DM had a surname as middle name. We don't know why, she didnt or her sisters. Done the family tree and it doesnt crop up anywhere.

Flint!! 🤣🤣🤣 Another random noun as a name! Those crack me up, especially.

You could have had another one and called it Chalk. 🤭 Or Limestone. Or Granite. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Or Peat... (works as a yoonique spelling of Pete...)

😄

PoorEileen · 14/05/2026 06:08

My dd’s name has been mentioned. Tbf it was also suggested on here when I was asking for names! Lola. It certainly divides people.

Shelby - big fan of Steel Magnolias

Joel or Jude for a boy - not cool enough to pull those off!

I had Shelby on my girl list. 🩷

TheyGrewUp · 14/05/2026 06:10

Half the names.on here are more normal than many that crop up on the usual threads.

mellongoose · 14/05/2026 06:11

Lorelai
Sandy

My DH vetoed Georgie for a girl. Would have been short for something. Lately has been saying he loves it.

Anyway, we both love the names we gave her in the end and can’t imagine her being anything else.

Donnersons · 14/05/2026 06:16

Barnaby. Which I still do like actually but my husband immediately vetoed that one.

edit because I realised you said unhinged, which I don’t think Barnaby is. However autocorrect wants to keep changing it to Barnacle so maybe I’ll claim that was my first choice 😄

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 14/05/2026 06:18

While having my emergency cesarean at 32 weeks I told the nurse DS was going to be called..... Zebedee.

We hadn't got around to choosing names at that point. It took us a while to decide but he ended up being called my maiden name... which is not Zebedee but was a name I had considered for a girl.

Crazybigtoe · 14/05/2026 06:25

Marmalade

Banana. I thought it went well with our surname 😂

Is your surname split ? :)

DH kept jokingly (well, mostly jokingly) suggesting Horatio for a boy which I laughed off, but there did come a point where I was like wait … maybe?

I still love Hero for a girl, I really do, but not sure I’d ever be brave enough to actually use it.

We had a brief moment of considering Aelswith for a while too.

Given the above DD ended up with a very normal name really.

I love Horatio but DH didn't. So I now have a cat called Horatio.

WhisperingAngelisnotbad · 14/05/2026 06:40

I wanted to call DS Nye. Vetoed by DH as we live in England.

todayofthenight · 14/05/2026 06:43

oh god I wanted for a boy
Kane
draco

and girls
tammy
livinia-bell
monroe

🤣😭

Twittable · 14/05/2026 06:44

When a little bit high on gas and air, I slurred that I wanted to call my gorgeous 2nd born DS Raphael. My mother hissed ‘that’s a bloody turtle and you’ve already got a sodding chipmunk!’ She did have a point 😆

Buggabootwo · 14/05/2026 06:47

I suggested Bathsheba for a girl and Ianto for a boy. I also got stuck on Rollo for a boy for a while. I came to my senses in time and DS has a nice normal name. On the other hand, the dog is called Ianto!

I love it it just sadly has stripper vibes

There is a girl called Sapphire at the school I work in.I think its lovely and her surname is ultra normal so it balances it

centaury · 14/05/2026 06:48

I really liked Endymion. Dymi seemed like on OK nickname for everyday use. I don't think I would have ever done it and I'm glad I didn't but it persistently rattled around in my brain in the last trimester 😂

Corvidsarethebest · 14/05/2026 06:49

I knew a little Moss about 20 years ago. I also know a Barnaby (not so out there, but the autocorrect to Barnacle would get tiring). And a Tallulah.

I love some of these names (Boudicca, Vivienne) and think most kids could style them out.

I knew a little Rocky as well, and a Satchel. Honey was more unusual then too.

I genuinely really (and still do) like Orlando. Just not the name for a boy from a non posh background growing up around Glasgow though!

My husband had Blair and Leanne on his list of girls names when I was pregnant. Yes this was 2006 not 1986.

Blair?! In 2006 when it was still the PM’s surname? Haaa. Well that has made me chuckle.

I don't get this 'stripper vibe' thing, most of the names like Ruby and Sapphire are also the names of Victorian young women in the Jacqueline Wilson series.

If Priti Patel can style out Priti, I'm sure that Sapphire would be just fine, all jewel names are fine (Ruby, Pearl) apart from Crystal, but that's because I think of Crystal Carrington from Dynasty!

I do blame Cher for calling her daughter 'Chastity' though, and I don't blame them for becoming 'Chaz' as a transman!

Rex! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 He'd have been called Tyrannosaurus and everyone would have done little-arm movements!

Jamie is a girl's name as well as a boy's.

Evan isn't a name, it's a surname.

Evan absolutely is a proper forename! It can be a surname but Evans is the more usual version.
