Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Is it really that different from other nature noun names like Viola, Willow, Summer? Or even another rock name like Ruby or Jade?

I see people make fun of the name Wren, but it's exactly the same as Paloma which means dove. Or Suzume, a Japanese name meaning sparrow.

If someone is not a fan of Biblical names, the pool really decreases.

But there's more of a logic to using those names, because they denote beautiful things.

Flint, though!!!

Are you sure it wasn't the German female name, Peta? I had a friend who was friends with a Peta, and my friend always pronounced it Peter, instead of Petta, how it's meant to be. Irritated the tits off me.

Nope, definitely Peter. It was her mums maiden name, but I still thought really cool 😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 14/05/2026 02:11

Moss? 🤔
I guess that's the kind of name that grows on you. 🤷‍♀️

Hazell (for a boy)
Asher (DP said it sounded like a sneeze)

I loved Autumn but DH said no ☹️

Millicent or Mildred. I still have a sneaking fondness for both.

When I was a teen I was obsessed with the name Orlando, had a hamster named that. Thankfully by the time I had DC my taste was a bit more traditional.

I had a hamster called Orlando too!

I've heard worse, but they're not great. She'd always be Milly, which is one letter away from Silly.

Hazel (that's the proper spelling😡🤣) is a girl's name. He'd have been teased into oblivion.

DH is right about Asher. It's also a surname, as in Jane Asher.

I can't decide which I find more irritating: random nouns used as first names or surnames used as such. Both are awful.

Love,
Car

Oh, that's awful! 🤣

I suppose it's the same with Ivy!

How awful to be a girl and have the middle name Peter! Imagine getting married. "Do you take Sarah Peter Smith to be your lawful wedded wife?" And half the congregation is thinking "Who the fuck is Peter? Is she trans? Is that her old name?" 🤣🤣🤣

Wonderlandpeony · 14/05/2026 03:03

A couple I know have two sons called Cosmo and Beau. Very pretentious imo, but they are an it type couple so can pull it off.

Chodge34 · 14/05/2026 03:06

Eldest son was nearly called Atticus but it didn’t go with our surname.

Coco and Octavia. I’m actually cheesed off I was talked out of them tbh Grin
I think I like them more than DD’s actual name!

We named our new puppy Coco, it’s just such a cute name 🙂

My awfulness was Atlanta Marie…. Fortunately DD ended up with a much more standard name!

Aintgointogoa · 14/05/2026 03:40

Gosh this takes me back....one of my favourite classic books is 'Bevis: the story of a Boy' (Richard Jeffries). it really chimed with my younger self being a tomboy and skittering around in the countryside, and is lovingly depicted as an English childhood in a halcyon age in the book...
HOWEVER, this being pre internet an' all...just imagine if I had gone with that choice then Beavis and Butthead arrived on the scene just when he was at secondary. It would have been carnage. I did find a Celtic name which I settled on, not dissimilar, and even with that he was picked on. However as he got past that, he came to really like it and the fact that it was hardly a common name in England. But be very careful what you wish for with regard to naming your children ! 😆
ps I did go through a phase, pre tomboy, of insisting my brothers call me Angel Butterlfy 😳

Gymnopediegivesmethewillies · 14/05/2026 03:43

Shelby - big fan of Steel Magnolias

Joel or Jude for a boy - not cool enough to pull those off!

Flint, though!!!

Edited

Flint is an important rock. It took us from simple ape to tool using hominid. And there are plenty of beautiful flint churches around. Plus it sounds similar to other names, like Flynn or Finn.

You also said you don't like Asher, as it's a surname. It's both. Asher was one of the children of Jacob in the Torah/Bible. I know this from growing up listening to Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, but it's pretty common in Jewish and more religious Christian families in America.

Haha, she loved it and I genuinely thought (and still think!) it was so cool!

StormGazing · 14/05/2026 04:49

Boys: Hunter or Tate
girls: Remy or Phaedra
DH wasn’t keen!
wjen I was a child I was going to call my first girl Daiquiri … perhaps @BellatrixpureBlood surname 😉

LBFseBrom · 14/05/2026 04:52

Satine is too much like Satan for my taste.

I knew someone years ago who called her baby girl, 'Antimony', which is a poison.

Duejuly26 · 14/05/2026 05:15

My dog has a very ‘human’ name, think Gary/Jeff etc. I didn’t want to tell anyone our ideas of what to call the baby I’m currently pregnant with I started calling him ‘Gary’ Junior and so did everyone else… now I’m starting to think it might not be a bad idea 😂

MinnieMountain · 14/05/2026 05:17

I knew someone with the middle name Horatio. Surname was Nelson. And he was from Norfolk. I'm sure he would have told me if he was a relative though.

DH wanted Mercutio, or Rupert.

I really liked Rose for a while. Now I think flower names are a bit sappy.

whiteroseredrose · 14/05/2026 05:19

DH wanted to call DS Winston or Nelson. Then, before we knew that DC2 was a girl, he suggested Ghengis because our surname begins with a G. Muppet.

I love it it just sadly has stripper vibes

I taught a girl called Safir, which I thought was lovely.
Also taught a girl called Ron.
FIL was desperate for us to call DD Xenobia ( a Persian princess???) When we declined, it became their next cat’s name.
