Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

For some reason I loved Nova-Lee. Wtf. Both dd have normal names, thankfully.

Were you a big Blake's Seven fan? (Cally and Avon-backwards)? I rather like the name Kerr for a boy.

Purplebunnie · 14/05/2026 12:09

Ooh I forgot I did trifle with the name Vienna - think there was an Ultravox? song at the time.

SadTimesInFife · 14/05/2026 12:09

I've heard of someone called Ophelia, which is lovely but a bad omen for relationships/drowning, but worse still is her surname...Dick.

Yup!!

There is of course a back story, we struggled to get pregnant, then I had several miscarriages. For a girl the middle name would have been something like Hope/ Joy but I couldn't think of one for a boy. So I thought Light

Totally get you about Light! I lost my third baby, it was a total miracle that I got pregnant again and had another healthy baby and I was very drawn to names to do with light as well. Lucy for a girl, although it would have meant throwing out all our other favourites before that. For a boy I went through a brief phase of wanting to incorporate Lucky, for obvious reasons but also because it’s close to the ‘light’ meanings. But DH would never have agreed. In the end DS was given a solid old favourite.

Vienna just makes me think of Rigsby’s cat in Rising Damp but you are probably too young to remember that!

YessicaHaircut · 14/05/2026 12:18

I had Fabian and Jocelyn on my boys list and Evangeline on my girls one. Also as DS is a rainbow baby after 2 mc, I toyed with ‘Prism’ as a middle name. Fortunately DH suggested waiting until DS was born to choose a name and he has a lovely but ordinary name.

I know it's a proper name, but all I can think of is the fruit.

If she has a Clementine, she really needs to have another named Grapefruit or Lemon.

Satsuma, Pomelo, Tangerine, Mandarin, Kumquat, Easy Peeler ...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/05/2026 12:20

I knew a Peregrine who must be about 35 now. Perry for every day. I'd be surprised to meet a female Peregrine, but I suppose you get used to people's names pretty quickly once you know them.

“Easy peeler” 😂😂 “perfect for kids lunchbox”

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 14/05/2026 12:21

Zero.

...Not in memory of the actor Zero Mostel, but because we couldn't find a single boy's name that we even liked; and when we asked our four-year-old DD - who was desperate for a baby sister - what name she would like if she had a baby brother instead, she replied emphatically, "Nothing!"

Please don’t name your poor child Moss ☹️

You probably don’t want to know the other option… or my other child’s name 😬

Twinkletoesandspaghettios · 14/05/2026 00:11

oh pleas don’t!!

Are yours called things like John or Stephen? Can’t think of anything worse tbh.

Banana. I thought it went well with our surname 😂

Banana LeStrange does have a certain ring to it ... 😁

I don't have kids, but this thread has just reminded me a former colleague of mine wanted to call his son Aneurin. Thankfully he didn't (I suspect he was outvoted by his Mrs!)

danglethedingle · 14/05/2026 12:25

I've always loved the old Anglo Saxon names, and I actually considered loads of names along the lines of Aethelflaed and Enid for a girl, or Athelstan and Edwyn for a boy. ExH vetoed all of them. They all ended up with normal, ordinary names that are easy to spell and pronounce

But as no good idea should ever be wasted, my dear dogs and cats all sound like they should have been born prior to 1066.

It’s my dads name, he died when I was a child.
She was my only chance (well, last I guess as I was always done at two kids) to honour him, and as it’s just a middle name I went for it.
luckily she loves it rather than finding it a burden, and it actually flows really nicely with her name.

Mine too 💔 I knew there would be a good reason why you rejected Vivienne but not Roy!

I know a Satine who is 18 or 19.

mummymeister · 14/05/2026 12:25

Tant, Emile, Alban and Winston for boys. DH hated all of these.
All our DCs first names are saints names. I snuck in a few unusual ones for middle names though.

It works surprisingly well as a middle name. It really does flow.

my partner was the one who said no to Vivienne. I might still use it one day…on a cat or something.
harry Kane called his daughter Vivienne a month or so later, which would have wound me up so it’s a good job I didn’t use it really 🤣

Is it German? I know Petra (which would presumably be a variant of the same name) is quite common in Germany but not come across Peta there. I've known two women called Peta (one English, one Australian), both of whom pronounced it as in Peter - what has convinced you it's 'meant to be' pronounced Petta?

Peta Fowler (the academic) is pronounced Peter. I thought she was going to be a man but she wasn't.

Definitely not too young but I had forgotten that's what the cat was called.

There was a child in DD2s class who was called Poppy and she had a brother called Oscar - I had two cats called the same although the cats weren't siblings

Tulipsanddandelions · 14/05/2026 12:38

I loved Dimitri & Lysander for when pregnant (17 yrs ago) was vetoed by everyone so DD ended up with a different name all together.

ImImmortalNowBabyDoll · 14/05/2026 12:39

If we'd have had twin boys, they would have been Arthur and Merlin. 😂

I also LOVE Sapphire but it gets a unanimous thumbs down whenever I mention it. I still think it's beautiful though.

That's a lovely name, memories of Sapphire and Steel on TV many years ago! We had chosen Barnaby for a boy but had a girl, OH's boss then had a dog he called Barnaby so perhaps it was a good thing we had a girl!
Our lovely neighbours had a dog with the same name as our granddaughter, whenever one of them was called in their garden, the other got very excited in their garden!

The Horatio I knew was at Eton, and he still felt the need to call himself Dave.

He is the Horatio of Horatio's Gardens and died tragically.

@NameChangeMay2026 , Evan definitely is a name. Where do you think the surname Evans comes from?

Lorelai and Augusta. Middle name Lark. Surname has lots of Ls making Lorelai an even worse option. Shockingly dh went along with both!

Love name Augusta!
