Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Love the name Peta. It is pronounced ‘Peter’ which she says causes her problem. She is Irish so not actually sure where it come from.

I had Otto on my list which DH vetoed.

That's a shame. Going with the classical theme, you could have used Otho, but maybe your DP wouldn't have liked that either.

Malachy is a beautiful name, and quite popular in Ireland.

Malachy just makes me think of the stone malachite.

Twins - Malachite and Granite! 🤣🤭

Is it German? I know Petra (which would presumably be a variant of the same name) is quite common in Germany but not come across Peta there. I've known two women called Peta (one English, one Australian), both of whom pronounced it as in Peter - what has convinced you it's 'meant to be' pronounced Petta?

Because it's a German name and that's how they pronounce it.

Well Gwyneth Paltrow has an Apple so why not?

Paltrow also has a candle named This Smells Like My Vagina. I really wouldn't be influenced by her naming preferences!

Athelstan 🫣🤭

I love it! 🤣

An ex of mine and her sister were born in South America

her parents rather liked Conceptione which I understand is a common girls name in South American Spanish - or was in the very early 50's.

In 'European' Spanish however the meaning is a bit fruity!

Aneurin is a great name! I know someone called it, Nye for short (yes we are Welsh!)

Yorick and Gulliver. Still love both. Should have gone for middle names.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

"Alas, poor Yorick"!

One of my mums names was Pearl. It’s a beautiful name.

I love Pearl, too.

I know some men called Aneurin. None called Nye.

Greer
I still love it but we’re not Scottish
And not upper class enough to get away with it in England 😆

IT'S A SURNAME THOUGH! 🤣

I’m due in a couple of months and we’re down to two names…. One of which is Moss @aperolspritzbasicbitch 😬😆

Moss? I’m not lichen that…

Actually I really do like it. It’s very unusual but it also sounds like a real name and could work at any age.
I just couldn’t resist.

Oh, being a leftie I thoroughly approved of the political credentials of the name 😄, just had visions of the poor kid going through life having it spelt/pronounced wrong! Going by replies on here, though, I'm wondering if it's in more common use than I thought...

ruethewhirl · 14/05/2026 20:34

This thread has also just reminded me that in one of the Bridget Jones books her daughter has a doll called Saliva. 😄

SleepsAThingOfThePast · 14/05/2026 20:37

Dd has a girl in her year called Merlot and another year vivienne

Frumpitydoo · 14/05/2026 20:41

I know someone with a DD called Tesla, named before the birth of the car brand. I always feel sorry for her!

Vivienne's a pretty normal name.

NutsAndMay · 14/05/2026 20:49

Just looking back at my list I had Wyld/Wild, Indie, and Rogue for a girl. Bit of a theme 😂 I had no idea my actual daughter would end up being all of those things and did not need to be named them…

For a boy I had Byrd, Fox and Wolf - not ever serious contenders I don’t think - and also Lux meaning light. I quite like it on paper, maybe for a middle name, but the idea of announcing your child as a luxury upgrade is unfortunate. “James Luxe! New and Improved!” 🫣

desperatemum1234 · 14/05/2026 21:03

DH wanted Atom for a boy. It did grow on me, but we didn’t have a boy.

The ones I know are old Welsh men. I only know 3.

Indiana for DD1.

Still love it now to be honest but not a single person I mentioned it to had anything positive to say about it. DP hated it but if he'd been on board I'd have used it.

DD1 and DD2 both have beautiful, albeit "old lady" names.

Maybe I need another cat? 😆

I have an Indianna ! she is 32 so when she was born unusual names were not as mainstream as they are now. I was watching an Indian Jones film and I thought that so pretty for a girl! glad I stuck to my decision it really suits her and she loves it :)
