Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

Are you sure it wasn't the German female name, Peta? I had a friend who was friends with a Peta, and my friend always pronounced it Peter, instead of Petta, how it's meant to be. Irritated the tits off me.

Is it German? I know Petra (which would presumably be a variant of the same name) is quite common in Germany but not come across Peta there. I've known two women called Peta (one English, one Australian), both of whom pronounced it as in Peter - what has convinced you it's 'meant to be' pronounced Petta?

I still secretly love Rupert, not sure if DS could style it out tho

A mum I knew had a Teddy then a Rupert. I stopped bumping into her after a while so I never found out whether she went on to have a Paddington!

There are some excellent cat names on this list! Calypso (nn Callie) has just made it onto mine...)

My unhinged names are:
Demelza (had just had a Poldark phase)
Florian (I spent a lot of time in Belgium but DH thought he'd be bullied)
Felix (I still love this, and it would have suited DS, but DH insisted it was a cat name)

When I was much younger I insisted I would have a daughter and call her Anoushka... DS1 bump was nicknamed Horace and when he did in fact turn out to be a he it did briefly cross my mind as we were already so used to calling the baby that.

Melisande. Milly for short. This was pre the Red Witch from Game of Thrones so I think I escaped with that one. Phew.

Floofle · 14/05/2026 09:38

Constantine is the latest addition to my boy list but unlikely we're having more babies so it'll have to be a cat name!

I’m due in a couple of months and we’re down to two names…. One of which is Moss @aperolspritzbasicbitch 😬😆

It's not a great name for a child, to be frank. Aside from the fact that my dog and I regularly meet a (lovely) lurcher called Moss, It's too close to 'moist' for me!

I loved St John too. Big Jane Eyre fan when i was a teen.

But St John in JE was UNBEARABLE!

Lobelia123 · 14/05/2026 09:39

Tallulah. I must have been off my head to even consider such a pretentious and ridiculous name....but for a while I LOVED it!!! Thankfully the baby was a boy LOL

Peregrine, Perry for short.
Didn't happen but I do chuckle now.

Snap! Except we were thinking either Perry or Reggie as nicknames.

Also, Rollo was a serious contender for middle name 😂

NoLostCause · 14/05/2026 09:43

I really wanted DS2 to be Elvis.

I’ll refer you to my earlier post - that’s my DD’s name! We did go for it and everyone loves it 😊 It really suits her, thankfully.

elliejjtiny · 14/05/2026 09:45

Jadzia. Yes we like star trek in this house. Ds1 is thankful he is a boy!

merrymelody · 14/05/2026 09:46

Oberon / Auberon for my son.

LittleRobins · 14/05/2026 09:51

Trevor. I’m not sure what I was thinking or quite what my hormones were doing to me to make me thing I could name my child that!

MeekSqueak · 14/05/2026 09:55

Roy!

We couldn’t come up with a name before DS was born.

Then once he was born he didn’t sleep literally AT ALL for weeks, and had to go to the registry office at the last possible day and pick a name and we were hallucinating with tiredness and delirious with mastitis and I had cabbage leaves in my bra and he SO nearly ended up being Ichabod

Fortunately my mother shook some sense into me.

Sorry, but I’m howling at this.. ( think it was the detail about the cabbage leaves )
But - wow - Ichabod??
Where did you find that name?😳

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 14/05/2026 10:04

Oh my god I wanted to call my son Greene 😭😭😭 like the colour.

Ichabod is in the Old Testament.

Thatsillymama · 14/05/2026 10:18

I did like a lot of the Greek/norse gods names. Glad I didn't go with any of them though my son really suits his name. He is not an apollo, thor, odin or thyr!
