Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

My dh and his friend had a boozy night out and then a curry and then spent hours when they got back saying that Rogan Josh would be the perfect name for ds. I mean each part is ok as a name but not really together!!!

GreenSmallBird · 14/05/2026 08:34

I wanted Calypso for my DD because I loved the very outgoing character in The Camomile Lawn - thankful DH pointed out that maybe naming our DD after a woman who shagged her way through the Blitz was probably not a great idea.

It's a bit of a story and makes sense in my head, but my daughter has 3 middle names! Quite the passport.

We couldn’t come up with a name before DS was born.

Then once he was born he didn’t sleep literally AT ALL for weeks, and had to go to the registry office at the last possible day and pick a name and we were hallucinating with tiredness and delirious with mastitis and I had cabbage leaves in my bra and he SO nearly ended up being Ichabod

Fortunately my mother shook some sense into me.

Where's that laugh response when you need it?

Ginburee · 14/05/2026 08:50

Peregrine, Perry for short.
Didn't happen but I do chuckle now.

Rogan Josh would be a lovely name without it already being the name of an excellent curry.
I also think Chlamydia would be a pretty name if the word wasn't already busy.

AAAAYY · 14/05/2026 08:54

Unity - literally after the awful fascist Mitford sister. I have no idea what I was thinking. In my defence I didn't actually know much about her at the time but still. DD is very grateful I went for something a bit more run of the mill!

LoyalMember · 14/05/2026 08:55

Jaxon. What's that about, ffs...? Chloe and Phoebe are two girls' names I absolutely detest.

LancreWowhawk · 14/05/2026 08:56

I suggested both Perdita and Ariadne, which DH vetoed for being too 'weird', but I still maintain they are lovely. There's an Ariadne in DD's class, which is sort-of validating, and sort-of a relief, because DD is the only one with her (much more traditional) name in the school.

I loved honey, meadow and pearl for baby girl names but DH vetoed them, and we ended up with a pretty regular name in the end! Hoping if we ever have another girl I might get to pick something more unusual 😁

One of my mums names was Pearl. It’s a beautiful name.

CharlottePotatoes · 14/05/2026 08:59

4yo DD has informed us her baby will be called ‘Crubella’ which DH thinks melds Cruel, Rubella and Crab into one word. She is most adamant that it’s a beautiful name and daddy is not being kind!

CakesAndCandles1 · 14/05/2026 09:00

Greer
I still love it but we’re not Scottish
And not upper class enough to get away with it in England 😆

Posted about this many times over the years but.......

about 30 years ago when announcing births in the local paper was still a thing, a local couple had twin boys.....Leroy and Elroy.

Why would anyone do that to their sons?

My "out there" names according to my first H were Eden and Eloise. But this was a man who (in 1997) said "What's wrong with Susan or Claire?"

Edited

When I was expecting my son I was chatting to another mum-to-be who was having a girl. She told me the baby was going to be called Eden. I thought it was nice. She’ll be about 24 now.

Lol. I also loved the name Calypso from the TV series. Just as well I didn’t have girls but I still love it.

Athelstan 🫣🤭

I know a young adult Athlestan! (Ath to friends).

SaltedPotato · 14/05/2026 09:12

Zephyr....

ohdelay · 14/05/2026 09:14

Kakashi/Tenzo/Zebedee. Probably for the best I didn't get my way.

Bunionbabe · 14/05/2026 09:14

You've got to think about the poor kid with a hard to pronounce and spell name starting school. Fancy names are just vanity projects by parents imo. Good old Biblical or classical names never go out of fashion. David, Mark, Duke, Gabriel, Sarah etc. Satan, Judas or Beelzebub perhaps not so much.

MyIcyHeart · 14/05/2026 09:15

I wanted my twins to be called Eulalia and Persephone.
My ex-husband did not.
He won.
They have lovely, but traditional names, instead.
I still think Twin 2 would have suited Sephy...

Ilikeanimalsmorethanpeople · 14/05/2026 09:18

Oh god I genuinely look back on this and still think they would have been okay....

Storm
Rogue
Atlas (still love)
Archer
Astrid
Vivienne (still love)
Emerald
Jareth
Bowie

Place names had to be ruled out because of my surname but I really liked harper and with my surname it would have been a bit like Hubba Bubba...

Badgerfurpurse · 14/05/2026 09:18

Clementine. ExH refused to name our daughter after an orange. Still maintain it’s a good name but what do you shorten it to? Clem? Clemmy? Both a bit urgh.. Also it would absolutely not have suited our daughter who is very much not a Clementine.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 14/05/2026 09:23

I do still love Vivienne.
also loved Primrose and Clementine.

Half the names.on here are more normal than many that crop up on the usual threads.

I agree!! Some very weird opinions on here about what I'd consider pretty normal names - Bonnie, Milly, Jade, Evan?!
