Unhinged baby names you considered for your children when pregnant…

What were they?
i have two girls, and I’m a fan in different names - but not made up names, IYKWIM.

when I was pregnant with my first I watched Moulin Rouge, and for quite a while I was convinced that Satine would be the perfect name, but my partner said no.
my second I was desperate for Vivienne, which in in itself is a gorgeous name, but combined with Satine seemed to follow a trend of ‘ladies of the night’ (pretty women) so my partner said no again.

whats the most out there names you considered for your children?

my top boys name was Moss. Not sure I’d have gone through with it.

@WheretheFishesareFrightening

i find it odd for a girl, definitely a boys name and the person I think of in that awful comedian Roy Chubby Brown, don’t burden a little girl with that name

It’s my dads name, he died when I was a child.
She was my only chance (well, last I guess as I was always done at two kids) to honour him, and as it’s just a middle name I went for it.
luckily she loves it rather than finding it a burden, and it actually flows really nicely with her name.

Gaia.

Gaia would be a gorgeous name though

Hepzibar and Byzantine. My children regularly thank their father for his intervention to stop me 😂

When I was pregnant,my brain did weird things when it came to names

I wanted:
Rainbow
Hope
Leaf
River
Garfield
Sunny
Peaches
Wren
Liberty
Leonard
Dusk
Phoenix
Zappa
Ziggy
Rain/raine
Moon
Luna (still love this)

My father told me to pick a name, call myself it and live with it for the rest of my pregnancy

If I still liked it THEN I could give it to a child (or as he put it 'saddle a baby with it')

She ended up as a Sophie

Berry.
But i just googled it 8 babies had this name in 2012...

ObsessiveGoogler · 14/05/2026 07:57

Isis (pre- Islamic State)

I suggested Bathsheba for a girl and Ianto for a boy. I also got stuck on Rollo for a boy for a while. I came to my senses in time and DS has a nice normal name. On the other hand, the dog is called Ianto!

Ianto is a great name! (Not Welsh, I just really like Torchwood!)

i wanted Lysander for my son. DH vetoed, he now has a very ordinary name.

SapphireSeptember · 14/05/2026 07:59

Sadly the names I chose for DS had he been a girl were very plain. Amy for the first name (because of the singer Amy Lee) and then Jane and Rose as middle names. He got a fancier boy's name and two middle names anyway (Lee being one of them.)

Bijou - only by DP is 6.3" and it would have been awks if she was massive.
And Monty for a boy!

Blossom. Our surname is a tree so dh ruled it out because “we’re not a garden centre”.

I know a Blossom Hill-like the wine

Caress. 🤣 In fairness, I was fifteen, and there had been a TV character called Caress, I think. (I wasn't pregnant at fifteen, I was just imagining my future family. Also young enough not to have any idea how pervy the world was and what it would have made of a girl called Caress!)

P.S. - Yes, there was a character in The Colbys, a Dynasty spin-off, called Caress Morell, played by Kate O'Mara.

Edited

OMG, that was me at 15 too after the Kate O'mara Character. Luckily I grew out of it too.

My 31 year old son was going to be named Bonnie if female. He was so glad he was male !

I know one, she’s horrible. 😂

sunnydisaster · 14/05/2026 08:18

The most outrageous I came up with was Louis but spelt Louie. Dd has an uncommon name although a ‘normal’ one that you do hear around, and people an often get it wrong. So I’m glad I didn’t go for anything mega unusual or a weird spelling.

sunnydisaster · 14/05/2026 08:19

Now I like ‘Lainey’ as a girl’s name but I’m way past that stage!

violetcuriosity · 14/05/2026 08:22

Eleni, which is a lovely name but we are not Greek 🤣

I also LOVE Sapphire but it gets a unanimous thumbs down whenever I mention it. I still think it's beautiful though.

I was thinking about Sapphire the other day. Ruby and Emerald get used but Sapphire not really, yet it lends itself to rather nice diminutives or is it the Sappho link that people think is too much of a statement? But sapphire is pretty - as are the stones.

Also reminds me of Saffira.

Was it one f the Anne of Green Gable's books?

Avril's Atonement??

No it was by Helen Forester called Twopence to cross the Mersey. About a well off family who went bankrupt plunging them into poverty. The eldest child had to take on the care of her siblings. Avril was the name of 1 of her siblings.

DH wanted to call DS Winston or Nelson. Then, before we knew that DC2 was a girl, he suggested Ghengis because our surname begins with a G. Muppet.

When DS was 3 he said he wanted us to callhim
Ghengis!

Thought Mirena would be a nice name if it wasn't a contraceptive...

We had an apprentice start in the pharmacy i used to work at. A woman rang up and the apprentice answered. She spent a while rummaging through the made up prescriptions before shouting out to us all if any of us had seen one for Mirena coil , she can't find her prescription 🤦🏻‍♀️ She didn't mute the phone either so the patient heard 😂

D0RA · 14/05/2026 08:26

Perdita and Venetia . We are not posh enough to carry them off 🙁

Also goes well as a middle name following ‘Hannah’ !!

CrazyWorldBlues · 14/05/2026 08:29
