Iran has targeted US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain with ballistic missiles as the two sides continued to trade missiles on Friday, despite a ceasefire remaining in place.
America’s military said Iran had fired a total of seven ballistic missiles at both Gulf nations. “Initial assessments indicate six of the missiles launched by Iran were intercepted and a seventh did not reach its intended target.
“There are currently no reports of harm to US personnel, and Iranian claims of damaging US 5th fleet headquarters in Bahrain are false,” the US Central Command (Centcom) said in a statement.
Iran also said it fired at four tankers attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz without its permission. Tehran said it was retaliating after Washington struck Iranian surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, which are both on the waterway.
Since the start of a declared ceasefire in Iran on April 8, Trump has repeatedly suggested that a deal between Iran and the US could be days away. However, he has privately told aides he would consider ending the ceasefire if Iran were to kill US troops, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The president’s reluctance to resume hostilities suggests he might be willing to tolerate similar flare-ups for weeks or even months to avoid a return to conflict, the report added.
Hours before Iran fired the ballistic missiles, Trump told NBC News that Tehran only has “22 per cent, 21 per cent of their missiles”.
He said a peace deal had not yet been signed between Washington and Tehranbecause Iran’s leaders were “strong” and “proud”, telling NBC News: “There are things they never thought they’d be doing, that they’re going to have to do. They’ve got no choice.”
The past few weeks have been marked by periodic skirmishes between the two sides as the US is enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports in response to Iran’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Friday, Iran fired warning shots at two American warships in the Gulf of Oman after the US navy intercepted a sanctioned vessel in the Indian Ocean.
Tasnim, the Iranian state news agency, said Tehran attacked two American destroyers with drones and missiles in retaliation for “US interference in regional shipping lanes”.
On Friday morning, US forces said they had boarded the Davina, a supertanker that can carry up to two million barrels of crude oil and which flies no nation’s flag.
“We will continue global maritime enforcement to disrupt illicit networks and interdict vessels providing material support to Iran, wherever they operate,” the US Indo-Pacific Command posted on X. “International waters cannot be used as a shield by sanctioned actors.”
It came after Hezbollah’s leader rejected a US-mediated ceasefire with Israel on Thursday, branding it a “surrender’’ as Israel conducted airstrikes in southern Lebanon and the militia fired rockets and drones.
There's a brilliant opinion piece in The Times about stupidity and the war in Iran.
