It is a risk. Labour got 18,202 in 2024, Reform came second with 12,803. Given how well Reform is doing...

The electorate might not appreciate being used as pawns.

I think this is a good point. It’s a massive risk that Burnham is taking, in a seat where there isn’t even a large majority.

TemperanceWest · 14/05/2026 17:42

This is where we find out if Streeting has the backing he needs to trigger a leadership challenge. If he does, he would do it now before Burnham can even be selected to run in the by-election.

Although he has said that he wants a broad leadership election, so he can’t really now act to block Burnham from standing. We’ll see what happens now.

TemperanceWest · 14/05/2026 17:45

Bloody hell, Burnham's statement. He thinks he has it in the bag.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 17:45

Ah, I thought he had to resign to stand. That’s less of an issue, but standing is lose lose for his reputation either way.

Piggywaspushed · 14/05/2026 17:46

He's hugely popular in Liverpool as well as Manchester, if that matters.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 17:47

He’s not with me. He’s a good mayor. He was too centrist in government. And I like people who stick to their commitments- this is very poor.

TemperanceWest · 14/05/2026 17:49

This will be tricky for Reform. If they stand a candidate and win, they'll be potentially be helping Starmer.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 17:53

But hurting Burnham. Depends if they really believe he’d change Labour’s fortunes.
And a Burnham losing and skulking back to Manchester is weakened.

dontcallmelen · 14/05/2026 17:55

Another who doesn’t get the love for Andy Burnham, not impressed at all by these shenanigans it helps no one this is not the Labour way.

I’ve always been more centrist, so that would align with my views, and I’ve always liked him. I don’t agree with what he’s doing now, though.

Should be an interesting by-election, having said that.

More centrist than Starmer?

Sad.y it absolutely is…
Factions and infight8ng. Drives me mad.
Frank Turner describes it well:
Idiot fucking hippies
In 50 different factions
Locked inside some kind of
Sixties battle reenactment

Honestly, it is embarrassing. I wonder if Starmer is actually having a bit of a laugh at them all scurrying around, plotting.

Piggywaspushed · 14/05/2026 18:02

Interestingly, DH think Burnham is a left winger. This is because he reads The Times. This means lots of people will think this. I genuinely wonder if it is just because he is Northern.

PickAChew · 14/05/2026 18:12

I think a noticeable regional accent does colour many people's views of where they think someone stands, politically. It also prompts some people to make assumptions about someone's intelligence.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 17:58

I don’t know really. I very much supported Starmer at the election and largely align with his views now. But he did appear to be more right-wing in order to compete with Reform, which I consider a mistake.

These days, I don’t really know where I stand in terms of left and right (though always left of centre). These days, I just want Reform and Nigel Farage kept away from power. The idea of them in power is terrifying for me, with a disabled DD.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 18:15

in government, Starmer and Burnham were pretty identically centrist. Burnham has done some more left wing stuff as mayor, but who knows if it would translate back to government. With you on fear of Reform.

BIossomtoes · 14/05/2026 18:33

Apparently Simons’ constituency has combusted at the prospect of being used to get Burnham into parliament. That 5k majority could vanish like snow in the sun if he stands there. What IS this obsession with him?

ThatbloodyRoblox · 14/05/2026 18:37

I like the way Andy can communicate and I think that would be helpful as Labour need to be better at telling a story. I don’t think he would necessarily be a global hit.
I really dislike WS I have no idea why, I just find him a bit too full of himself.
I like Angela.
Iam so disappointed in this shit show.
That seat will be targeted very heavily, the electorate may well get pissed as being used as a stepping stone.
They could very well lose the mayoral as well. So all for nothing really.

I don't blame them.

Wouldn’t blame them if it did, I’d be pissed off if I lived in the constituency & used as crowbar for Andy Burnham it’s taking the electorate for granted extremely arrogant & high handed behaviour.

BIossomtoes · 14/05/2026 18:46

I’d be pissed off enough to go and vote Green.

cardibach · 14/05/2026 19:00

I actually really hope the greens take it. Labour won5 miss the seat and it would put this Burnham nonsense to bed. What would he do if the polls showed him as unlikely to win it, I wonder? Plough on? Or slink back to Manchester?

BestIsWest · 14/05/2026 19:06

Oh I am too furious for words! To think I gave this shower of shit the benefit of my vote last week. Grrr.
