A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

That presupposes that Starmer’s successor delivers, and survives.

Not sure anyone can make guarantees of either.

Consider a run on sterling or gilt spike.

Sorry, I meant the change in leadership alone won't be the trigger - which I think is what Alison Taylor is suggesting.

The bond markets punishing a socialist spending spree would do it.

Upstartled · 12/05/2026 07:08

There won't be a general election, it's an empty threat.

I agree. As much as Labour screeched for a GE when the Tories changed leader / PM, the only people who actually voted for Starmer are those in his constituency. Many voters vote for a party, not a PM or even an MP.

It's a total nonsense to use a potential GE as a threat. However...Starmer strikes me as the type of man who'd go nuclear if forced out, so it wouldn't surprise me if, when he went to the King to resign, he asked for permission for a GE too. Might as well go down in flames. 🤣

EasternStandard · 12/05/2026 07:14

A GE is less likely rn but perhaps changes a bit in time, not sure.

KS staying no matter what or actually realising, I guess we’ll find out soon.

@Upstartledis where I’m at pretty much with GE issue

Ah sorry - yes, agrée.

Taylor is fear-mongering.

Sure. But there’s got to be someone standing for leader. No-one’s standing.

Yes, but the symbolism of reaching 81 will be important imv.
That should signal that the game is up, but this is Starmer so who knows.

I do wonder (not massively, just idle musings on occasion) what goes through his mind. Surely he actually does realise his time is up?

Maybe he's so unused to failing that he refuses to accept his lame / dead duck status!

Nuthatch26 · 12/05/2026 07:22

Labour will face calls for a GE if they change leader, as they did to the conservatives. Rayner called for a GE when Rishi Sunak took over.

I can't imagine what kind of teflon coated ego you must have to have to be so widely disliked and just shrug it off.

I guess we'll see today if he goes with some dignity intact, or he fights tooth and claw.

I feel like he has such messianic zeal and sees himself as the country’s saviour that he is going to hold on. I hope to be proven wrong.

i saw a video of him before the election being quite tough about immigration, stopping the boats, smashing gangs, securing borders etc. basically Reform type statements. But now he seems to think anyone making those same type of statements is “far right”.

I think his principles have all the depth of a saucer.

I think you'd have to get into the head of his particular demographic to work that one out!

Having seen how he is as PM, I doubt he's the type to pay the slightest bit of attention to his wife's opinion.

EasternStandard · 12/05/2026 07:28

If he doesn’t go Mahmood can’t really stay in cabinet and that is a big deal. She’s seen to be good by many.

Plus as Times just said they can’t wheel out Steve Reed on the daily media round every day, they’ll run out of pro Starmer very quickly.

Like AR people have to go when there’s no colleagues left to defend you.

This is all totally the opposite of stability and he needs to see sense and rip the plaster off.

FatEndoftheWedge · 12/05/2026 07:30

@CandidLurker agree and we know his views on women etc.

Well there may be some amusement if he decides to hang on. I'm in no rush for a swing to the left frankly.

FatEndoftheWedge · 12/05/2026 07:31

I don't undertsnd why reeves gets off Scots free and yet who would replace her !

Yep. Just realise, it’s fine, people will move on stability can come back without him.

Yes it is a big deal. Perhaps Mahmood has decided that she has nothing to lose?
Rayner has publicly criticised her plans as "un British", so the left of Labour don't like her. If someone from the left becomes PM, SM will be out anyway I suspect.

Who could replace an economist, chess-master Chancellor? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I imagine your dog would have more sense than to cripple the youth employment market!

Not sure about mine; he can be a bit thick! 🤣
