A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Absolutely brilliant. The MP for Makerfield, previously a safe Labour seat, is stepping aside for Burnham (I can’t see if anyone’s asked the incumbent what he’s been offered, but there you go).

The twists and possibilities in this are fantastic. And all of them will do Labour huge damage. 👍

Yet another "will he, won't he" episode while we wait to see if Burnham's elected. Just what we need.😬

I suspect this is Josh Simons paying penance for what he did to Gabriel Pogrund when he lead Labour Together.

Yep. They'll eat themselves alive. Good.

Welcome.
Thanks for your input, thats interesting. I'd be furious too if Burnham was parachuted in demanding my vote.
I live in GM. Does Burnham's mayoralty cover Makerfield? Its on the border between GM and Merseyside I believe?

Edited

Yes, Makerfield comes under Greater Manchester for Mayor.

Reform have a lot of support here and I don’t see how Andy feels it’s still a safe seat

Yes I'm sure Reform will throw the kitchen sink at this.
Burnham treating voters with contempt here. I can understand the anger you're seeing online locally.

Any chance of a big Green vote as well as Reform?

Hallowedturf · Yesterday 17:51

The first questions that any challenger should be asked is - 1) are you sure you are competent enough to be PM, and 2) are you quite certain that you want to be PM, that you really want this?

I have been a lurker on this page, but today is the first time I am commenting. I am so angry about this! Josh is my MP. I do not support Labour, but I have been happy with Josh as he has done so much for my area. To have Andy stand as MP in the hope of becoming PM is an insult to all us locals. We will be abandoned. The local Facebook page is fuming

I suspect it will be a crashing defeat. I'd be spitting mad too.

Nuthatch26 · Yesterday 17:53

Looking forward to the NEC vote!
Also looking forward to seeing who Reform's candidate will be.

If they stand their last candidate Robert Kenyon, then he has a lot of support. Army veteran too, very vocal on local issues too. Not read anything about bad him over the last few years

I feel sorry for the people in your area. Its going to be a bloody circus for you all. All because of Andy's ever growing ego. 🙄

I'm wondering if Reform will put someone like Zia Yusuf up. Or will Reform throw it to keep Starmer in power? He's the gift that keeps on giving for opposition parties.

Josh Simons a clever young man with ethics I suspect. He's Jewish and maybe disappointed in the handling of anti semitism.

I suspect we'll be hearing his name spoken again in the future.

Hallowedturf · Yesterday 18:04

Logically, Labour will re-elect a new PM in the same way they have governed.

i.e. an utter clusterfuck.

This article explains my negative comments about Simons. Part of his dirty tricks was questioning a Times journalists jewishness.

Labour minister Josh Simons resigns after falsely linking journalists to ‘pro-Kremlin’ network

I wondered the same re Zia Yousef. Blocking Burnham would be a huge scalp for Reform.

Thinking outside the box, would the Tories possibly not stand a candidate to clear the field a little?

i’m no Reform fan, but the irony of seeing Burnham fail to get a seat would be most amusing!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · Yesterday 18:16

All the present - and future - bonkersness from Labour is just magnificent for those of us who take an interest in politics from a right-ish perspective.

It looks very much like Starmer will keep going for a bit at least, but all of that time will be taken up with in-fighting. And with Starmer dragging Labour further down by being a truly atrocious PM. The permutations by which Labour turns even more into a laughing stock are endless. It could not have worked out better.

I said a while ago that I was hoping for Labour self-destruction over the summer to amuse me as I sip a cocktail. Thank you God, for delivering.

Bigot Phillipson being interviewed just now: "We had fantastic economic news this morning and NHS waiting lists have come right down, blah blah..."

  1. I wouldn't describe economic growth of 0.06 percent over three months as "fantastic".
  2. DH has been on an NHS waiting list for sun damage treatment since April 2025. He's been given seven appointments since then and all have been cancelled due to "pressure on the dermatology service". On Monday he had a private appointment with a consultant, and he's booked in for treatment next Thursday. Waiting lists are probably shorter because those who have private health insurance or can afford to pay have given up waiting, while some unfortunate souls have quite likely died while waiting for an appointment.
ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · Yesterday 18:22

Is this the best they could find?

5, 399 majority?

Out of 76, 641 electorate?

Risky.

In Wales waiting lists came down because patients were blocked by the managers at the health board who wouldn't refer you, or you went private, or died.

I would love to see the tories win it, but round these parts, they don't stand a chance - unfortunately.

I don’t care who wins it, just not Labour.
