A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks for the reminder. I've set it to record. (Only I could have booked a hair appointment for 1230 tomorrow.🙄)

Jon Craig:

"I’m told govt whips believe: 1. Wes Streeting will make his move on Thursday, to avoid clashing with King’s Speech; 2. Andy Burnham doesn’t have MP ready to quit; 3. Besides 87 MPs who’ve publicly called for Sir Keir Starmer to go, same number privately want him to step down"

I mentioned this on another thread in passing, but does anybody know what kind of flexibility the government has on scheduling the king's speech? Does it always follow the local elections like this? Or is it just total coincidence that the King is playing human shield for a result that we knew should be dreadful for Labour over a year ago?

I think it’s planned very much in advance, maybe always same time period not sure. But they have to organise all the security which is fixed.

Soz that doesn’t answer your question

FatEndoftheWedge · 13/05/2026 06:55

Jess Philips has said starmer has sat for a year on stuff about children because he didn't want to upset tech bosses.

LupaMoonhowl · 13/05/2026 06:56

State opening should have been earlier but delayed by Starmer because of all the Mandelsom stuff….

Ah, so a happy accident of sheer incompetence. I'll park my cynicism.

If Craig is right, and the whips are right, and 1 implies that Streeting does have enough nominations, there’ll be a great deal of unhappiness on the Labour left. A left candidate would stand. My guess would be Miliband. He’d easily get 81 MPs to sign up, for him to go against Streeting.

Then it all goes off, not just in a divisive fight, but for long after.

Rayner could stand. I don’t believe the tax issue would stop her if push came to shove. But I think it’s more likely that the bigger figures like her on the left would carve up agreements for cabinet positions with Miliband, IMO.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/05/2026 08:06

The backbenchers will eat Streeting alive.

They’re stuck. Streeting probably has the numbers still for a challenge, but beating the left in his party is another matter.

Ex-Labour peer, didn’t get name, very strong on a new left mandate can’t be brought in without checking with the country they want it.

Hallowedturf · 13/05/2026 08:26

Streeting strikes me as a wet - I’m not convinced he’s got the minerals tbh.

Frustratingly.

Upstartled · 13/05/2026 08:42

I know he does one of these each day just about but I really like yesterday's jrm entry. It makes me feel a bit more kindly towards Jess Phillips - whose resignation letter I didn't pass a glance over assuming it'd be the same old waffle -and now wondering how much other stuff bollard has been bollarding her on behind the scenes.

Do we think Wes will still be Health Secretary this afternoon?

EasternStandard · 13/05/2026 09:05

I don’t think he’ll sack anyone

Here’s another issue for him

Sir Keir Starmer has lost the support of all 11 trade unions affiliated to the Labour Party in another major blow to his premiership.

The Trade Union and Labour Party Liaison Organisation (Tulo), which is made up of 11 major unions, said it was “clear” Sir Keir must depart before the next general election.

A joint statement by Tulo said that Labour “cannot continue on its current path” in the wake of last week’s “devastating” local election results.

There’s more - basically saying he needs to go before next GE

He probably knows that he won't have the left of the party behind him and actually is maybe considering country over party (or self, at least). A fractured PLP would likely be worse than now. Or maybe that's giving him too much credit. 🤣🤣

They really are a bunch of fucking kids though, aren't they? Who was it said that they really just needed to split between left and centre left? It's the only way they won't fight like rats in a bag between themselves!

It's fascinating how different people see the current situation across MN...I sometimes wonder if I'm in an alternate universe!

Yes Jess P's letter was excoriating for Starmer, and worth reading.

Just reading that. Starmer doesn't care does he.
It's making me nauseous watching him cling to power. I knew he would though when the time came.

Yes it does feel like an alternative universe on here. Bollard and his cult following on MN. Weird.
Reading posts though, many of those who defend him still, didn't vote Labour last week. Why defend Labour whilst voting against? 💁‍♂️

Yeh not sure why there’s still so many pro Starmer on here when the general view is the opposite.

Agree - utter lightweights all of them.

Meanwhile Starmer is congratulated for being stubborn? Bonkers.

Ikr. I have yet to see a post saying that they voted Labour. Why bother defending them if you voted against? Bizarre.

I don't remember calls for the PM to stay in post for 'stability' when Boris was in this position, or Truss.
Now we have the most loathed PM in history, they want him to stay.

Stubborn is not a good personality trait. Pragmatic would be better!
