A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yesterday on sky an authority figure from Belgium possibly a mayor where they are crossing from now said the navy in the sea would stop them along with law changes.

Which navy, theirs?

zurigo · 09/05/2026 17:01

I was thinking that Gordon Brown hasn't aged well, but he's 75! Surely too old to be taking on a new role in government. Shows KS's pathetic desperation.

EasternStandard · 09/05/2026 17:04

Ignore me just googled what they propose

DrasticAction · 09/05/2026 17:05

Omg starmer in sky now don't think it's live.
We didn't give people hope and what our young can do ???
Removing legal power from parents via echps, ruining our hospitality industry ...doing nothing about dreadful student loans and forcing people on lower incomes to give more of their money over by refusing to raise thresholds...

DrasticAction · 09/05/2026 17:06

Well I'm not sure he was just saying throwing more money at this isn't going to help

Are ‘global finance’ and ‘structural misogyny’ the primary reasons why Labour received a right proper kicking in the local and devolved elections?

It really is pathetic desperation, as you say.

I don't mind his age

Roger Gale is 80 I think

My late father stopped work reluctantly at 75 - possibly not the best decision he could've made - he was bored and unhappy, even though he did tons of stuff in the community.

He was one of those people who had to have tons of stuff to do all the time. Didn't need much sleep. Very much the opposite of me. I wouldn't have doubted his ability to do those kinds of jobs.

Similarly, a senior professor at my university climbed a mountain on his summer holiday last year aged 82. Some people are just like that. I wish I was like that!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 09/05/2026 17:17

The BBC now has Labour at -1446 and Tories at -563.

On the end of this link is a piece by Rollings and Thrasher about the locals:
https://ukandeu.ac.uk/a-preview-of-english-council-elections/

It includes a table with broad evaluations of levels of win and loss (I know a pp posted a nicer colour chart about this but I can’t find a link online, so you’ll have to excuse this black-and-white version).

The Tories have “Good” at -400, “OK” at -600 and “Bad” at -850. Labour’s equivalents are at -800, -1000 and -1500.

I think these favour Labour, but anyway…the Tories will finish at the high (bad) end of “Good” and Labour is essentially at the threshold for “Bad”.

Even on this - IMO unfair - banding the Tories have performed a great deal better than Labour. I don’t pretend the Tories did well, they obviously racked up losses, but there’s only one outstanding loser, and that’s Labour.

A preview of English council elections - UK in a changing Europe

Michael Thrasher outlines the key things to look out for in the upcoming English council elections.

I ask myself, if/when Labour get back to the business of actually governing, what policies could reverse their fortunes?

This is a big moment.
Catherine West does not want to be leader of the Labour Party. And she is not going to be leader of the Labour Party.
But she has just kicked off the process by which the Labour Party may have its first leadership election since Keir Starmer was elected in 2020.
West’s plan (which she says she came up with this morning) is this: by Monday, either the cabinet will have ousted Starmer, or West’s colleagues will have a chance to nominate her formally to contest the party leadership.
It is highly unlikely that West would get to the 81 MPs required for there to be a full ballot of party members between her and Starmer.
But suppose she got close? Suppose dozens of Labour MPs backed West as a show of frustration? That might be enough to tempt others to launch a leadership bid.
Or it might fall apart rapidly and prompt Labour MPs to row in behind Starmer, solidifying his position for now.
Let’s see. Whatever happens next, this is a big moment.

My preferred option is for the cabinet to do a reshuffle within itself, where there’s plenty of talent, and for Keir to be given a different role, which he might enjoy, perhaps an international role,”

So she wants him demoted so that he can do what he likes doing - ponce around on the world stage pretending to be important. She's not wrong.
