A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour* *government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Good pic in the Telegraph; I’m sure many of us might have difficulty choosing! 😄

You can do both at our polling station as it's the local Methodist church (I think it's Methodist, anyway). 🗳️ 🙏

We're going for dinner at Hickory's, as it's next door, meaning DH can vote. I voted - Conservative x 3 - already by post.

boys3 · 07/05/2026 13:06

Indeed @Upstartled 😁

Sunderland should be one of the very many interesting ones. Although it’s not a complete Labour fiefdom, not quite in the 80% or more current councillors being Labour.

75 seats all up for election - 49 currently Labour, 12 LDs, 9 Conservatives, plus a handful of Reform - who may well be nearer that current Labour number once the votes are counted.

EasternStandard · 07/05/2026 13:13

Voted. Love polling day, always makes me feel happy.

Glad those meanie Labour stallers didn’t stop anyone as attempted.

busy polling station? Or weee the staff manning it just glad to see someone?

Quite a steady trickle, definitely not bad for a wee village. I was a spring chicken in the demographic, and I am not, realistically, a spring chicken!

WaffleBomb · 07/05/2026 13:36

Love that photo @TheNoWord 😂🙏

Thanks again for your excellent posts on stats @boys3.

I can't wait to vote! I was half way to work when polling opened so will have to wait until tonight.
Lots of colleagues talking about voting though, which I've never noticed before with local elections.

Back in the ‘80s it was said that at elections, of any sort, you got queues early in the morning with Tories on the way to work, and Labour queues later after the Post Office had opened for Labour voters to cash their giros.

So much crazy goes on every day I had practically forgotten about that

it's good for me that they're not counting overnight. I'm a very late person anyway and I'm trying to get myself back onto more normal hours. I was doing really well at the beginning of spring but now seem to be back on going to bed ridiculously late like
3 am

To be honest, I'm not really excited for results anyway. I don't particularly want to see Reform take over the area. No disrespect to Reform voters.

Usually there's not a lot of support for Labour round here, but obviously Keir Starmer was popular. I am assuming it's very much "was".

I blame Boris Johnson.

I enjoy polling day as well for some reason

I'll be there about 6:30 so that will be mostly people on their way home from work. I always vote on the way home and in the past that's been a bit of a rush making it there for 10 pm

When i have been in at 9:50, they are surprisingly calm

I was half expecting them to be outside with the supermarket style announcement that the tills will be closing shortly 😂

also when I was in my 20s, there were a couple of incidents where I stayed in a bar after work and just said "sod it" but it didn't feel like such a big deal then. I miss those days.

boys3 · 07/05/2026 13:44

@WaffleBomb hopefully they’ll be some excellent stats come the morning, and a shed load of similar as tomorrow progresses.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm off work tomorrow so I can nerd out with you. 😁

The actual vote felt a bit lacklustre as there’s no chance here but I love all the feeling of it. The fact we have a good democracy. And a nice community. And it makes me think of earlier times when dh and I voted at same time in the day, and happy we’re still together.

Soppy answer 😬

Not soppy, its nice and should be celebrated. 😊

Labour trying to cancel these election was a sharp reminder not to take democracy for granted.

I’ve fallen into a win-win frame of mind. As I posted above, I increasingly think Starmer will hang on for a while. But that’s so clearly a massive liability for Labour that I don’t care either way.

It’s true that Starmer being booted out would be great fun to watch. But protracted Labour discontent and civil war would be the bigger plus.

Just think about the panic that a loser like Starmer will generate in Labour ranks in a year’s time as he flails around yet more. Mmm, delicious.

Yep tg they didn’t succeed. I’d be so angry if they denied people votes.

It's not soppy at all

One of the reasons I like polling day is that you can appreciate the democracy, and you can remember all the times you've been there before.

thanks for all the staff - that's a hell of a long day and I wouldn't do it. One of my neighbours used to do it when I was in my 20s. She was retired from her main job though.

oh, that reminds me... there is another cliff edge that I've only recently found out about

So if you're a pensioner, or you're living on investment income or something, you get something called starting rate for savings? But if you do little bit of work on top, you lose the allowance pound by pound. Is that correct?

That seems totally mad

One of mum's neighbours is officially retired and he nearly had to make a decision about doing bits and pieces of extra work because of this cliff edge

It just doesn't make any sense. Again, I don't know who introduced that one or why these things don't get sorted. Seems like these things are on no one's list of things to do.

Yes I appreciate the people who make it happen locally too.

That is true. They simply don't have the leader-pushing ability which the Tories have, so the pantomime may well go on! 🤣

MelanzaneParmigiana · 07/05/2026 14:19

On balance I’d rather keep Starmer for now rather than risk any of the alternatives until there is s GE, but after his email yesterday to the Civil Service looks like he’s quitting.
