What age did you get engaged, married and have kids?

As I feel life is too short and I’m just throwing my life away. Me and my girlfriend are 33 and have just bought a house and are yet to get engaged, married and have kids. But because the cost of everything else we’ve just saved up for a house and have thought about the said stuff to a later time. But as said we both feel it’s a ticking time bomb to have marriage and kids, because for a woman after 35 it’s gets harder to have children. We’ve been together since 26, but all of this cost of living has made our lives a bit further behind than we’d like to be.

Anyone else in a similar situation?

Engaged at 21, I already had a house but we bought together later that year. First child at 25, another at 27. Still together.

Engaged: 29
Married: 30
Baby number 1: 31
Baby number 2: 34

TappingTed · 04/05/2026 13:15

Engaged 15 married 19

then

engaged 28 married 29

in your shoes I’d just ditch the wedding and get married. You’ve been together so long and it would save a bund of money better spent elsewhere. Maybe do it abroad for a holiday 2 in 1 and ttc on the honeymoon?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/05/2026 13:19

Never did formally get engaged. At the time (long ago!) dh thought ‘getting engaged’ was desperately uncool! We just set a date.

So I never had an engagement ring, but TBH the lovely ring he bought me right after the birth of dd2 meant a lot more to me.

Married at 25, dd1 at 28, dd2 at 31.

Acropolis49 · 04/05/2026 13:20

You don't have to do it in traditional order! We met 29. Bought first house together 30. First child 31. Second child 32. Bought (hopefully) forever house 35. Engaged 36. Third child 37. Married 39. Now 50.

Feelslikeaneternity · 04/05/2026 13:21

I know lots of people who had unexpected fertility problems. I wouldn’t hang about if it’s important to you. You can get married at a registry office, doesn’t need to be expensive.

I was engaged at 28, married at 30, kids at 32 and 34. But I know many people who planned similar timelines to me whose fertility issues meant they had kids at 35 or 40+

Geranium1984 · 04/05/2026 13:22

Met at 32, engaged at 34, married at 34, first baby 35, second baby 38.
Id prioritise getting married, short engagement and small wedding. It is just one day (an important one!) We were engaged for 8 months and had a big wedding. It was quite stressful to organise, so if I was to do it again, i'd do something smaller and local. Have a baby asap, having a family is the most important thing for us.

smallchange · 04/05/2026 13:22

Engaged 30, married 31, first child 34, second child 40.

Graduated 21, bought house 23, engaged 24, married 24, happily childfree.

But that was a zillion years ago, and I would be horrified at any smart young woman getting married at 24 these days!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/05/2026 13:35

plus inbetween losing a husband tho met another man a year later

a wedding is a day. Marriage is hopefully till death to you part

you don’t need to spend thousands on a ring or a wedding

so if marriage is important to you before kids then book a registry office or blessed place and get married asap /cheaply

krustykittens · 04/05/2026 13:40

Engaged at 25, married at 26, DD1 by 28, DD2 by 30. We had a small wedding and my dress was £90 in a chain store shop. Friends did the photography and lovely invites, another friend gave us a week in her holiday home for our honeymoon as a gift. I paid for the lot out of overtime. It's not worth putting life off or getting into debt for a huge wedding. No matter how much money you spend, you are just as married as someone who turned up to the registry office in jeans and a t shirt. If you want to be married before kids, which we did, just go for it. People don't remember how much you spent, they remember if they had a good time. The best wedding I ever went to, the bride wore a purple tutu and DMs, they hired a local pub and a dj, the food was fab, the music was awesome and we had an amazing time!

Swarly · 04/05/2026 13:42

Engaged at 28, married at 29 and baby at 30. Although we’ve been together since 18 and bought our home at 24 and already the money saved for our wedding so we did not need to wait.

passmeaglass · 04/05/2026 13:42

Met DH aged 35, moved in 37 bought house together 38 then ttc after 6 months. DS born aged 39, engaged few months later and married at 40. I always wanted to be traditional but buying together was the sensible thing first and we discussed getting married next but realised we should try for kids first due to our ages. I don’t regret doing it this way as DS is in our wedding photos aged 11 months. DH is 7 years older than me.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 04/05/2026 13:43

Guidanceplease20 · 04/05/2026 13:44

Engaged on my 18th birthday. Spilt late 19.

Engaged again when 23 and bought a house at 24 (and moved house to where we are now at 28) Married at 25. Baby 1 at age 29 and number 2 at age 31.

This year its our 34th wedding anniversary.

Mortgage repaid at age 48. Another huge life-moment for celebration.

picklefen · 04/05/2026 13:46

Mid 20s. It wasn’t entirely planned as our first child wasn’t planned but we chose to crack on with it, I have zero regrets. We did things a little topsy turvy by today’s standards but we own a beautiful home, have good careers, lovely children and will be child free by mid 40s! And most importantly still happily together 2 decades later.

I do think if things hadn’t have happened as they did for us we’d have been paralysed with fear as to when to do it. Sometimes it’s easier just playing the hand you’re dealt!

wellywangers · 04/05/2026 13:46

Met at 27 (me) and 24 (DP). Together 7 years when we had first child and got a mortgage same year. Second child is due in a few weeks. We've been together 10 years this year.
Engaged but no rush to get married, we need a 3 bed next so thats what our money is going towards. When we do get married it won't be a fancy wedding, probably registrar and then a party for family and friends after

Yes, engagements are just agreements, they don't have to cost a penny and you can get hitched for £130. Everything above the minimum is a choice. We weren't quite so bear bones about it but it was a means to an end, a lovely day fondly remembered but not as significant relative to the goal of moving on in life and building a home and family in the way we wanted to.
