The polling forecast for my borough was Reform winning 28 seats & council going NOC they gained six (in the flagshagger territory outer reaches hate Mayor Khan/ulez) I think what made the difference turnout was very high my wards & surrouding ones it was 52% & not much less in most other wards that & borough being heavily promoted as reform target & the electorate responded & mainly stuck two fingers up.

She is a member of the Fabian Society. That will set the tin foil hatters off!

I am awaiting the breakdown. Turnout last time was just under 25%.

BestIsWest · 09/05/2026 19:33

Any idea what kind of independents they are @SerendipityJane? Round here Independents tend to be to the right of Restore or the left of the Communist party. Or they have a single issue like the M4 relief road or they are Captain Beany. In other words difficult to see them forming a bloc.

I like Ed, but no.

There is an absolute corker of a thread about the left being a "snivelling self-righteous mob, busy bodying around, trying to shame others".

I hope we are all suitably ashamed of ourselves.😂

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2026 19:07

Well my intuition - vote Tory - failed We now have a right pair of reformers (in more than one way).

However when the breakdown shows what went wrong, the next vote will be far more efficient.

In the meantime, is anyone willing to speculate on whether Brum can secure a permanent coalition ?

All my life I have been bullied relentlessly that FPTP is the only way to deliver stability.

I am owed a fucktonne of apologies. In fact I may not have room for them all, as I am still collecting apologies from the people who insisted having a Monarch was how Britain was safe from destructive politicians who spy for the Russians and can't be trusted to obey their own laws.

I can't see any left-right alliances being viable. Out of that list, only number 5 looks like it could work and that would depend highly on the flavour of the tories and independents. Lib/lab/green and some independents might work.

dontcallmelen · 09/05/2026 19:59

That’s me told then, still rather be a snivelling self righteous leftie than a racist cunt.

I saw a Facebook post by a ousted Labour councillor who listed all the horrible insults he had faced since losing. He wanted to know why the right wing were still so angry in victory. He rightly linked it to football fans causing aggro even though their team won.

I really can't see a permanent coalition happening.

First challenge will therefore be to pass a budget. A legal requirement I believe.

(Also a leader will need to be elected ...)

We can all snivel together. (though it's surprisingly hard to do at the same time as rolling one's eyes).

It's like Brexit.

You won. Get over it.

Opposing football fans would want a losing manager to stay in place

Me too.

It reminds me of what happened in the days after the Brexit vote. All the racists suddenly emboldened, convinced they were going to rule the world.

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2026 20:25

As long as that keeps them away from us smelly lefties, it's fine with me

Yeah - why are they soooo angry still?

Going on the March next week - I’ll see how angry they are in person then - maybe they’ll just be skipping and singing into the promised land that is edging closer and closer though 🤔

I’d forgotten we were smelly.

namechangingeasy · 09/05/2026 20:30

Glad I found you all. Not looking at all the threads. As I feared now live in a Reform Council area. The place has not felt more positive since Labour got elected.

I know Labour has done a lot of good stuff, but certainly not publicised it enough. Pay rises feel swallowed up in CoL. I know a lot of CoL is outside government control with the war in Iran. Change is slow (of course after so many years of tories cutting things to the bone.)

Not feeling very hopeful today 😢

Bath! You champagne socialist. You should be washing from a communal muddy puddle. Anything else is rank hypocrisy.

It's hilarious, given that those on the right are always going on and on about how nasty people on the left are. Mote, beam.

Totally agree.

Let's have a moment with a snow covered Mount Etna. Taken from the Greek amphitheatre in Taormina. It was spectacular to see and then a few minutes later the mist rolled in.

That's a breathtaking view, if ever there was one, placemats.

I've been to South Shields with DS1, today. One of the grottier, now reform bits. It was 8 degrees and pissing down. I wore my big coat.

placemats · 09/05/2026 21:49

My sympathies. It's going to be at best 12 degrees when I get back to Manchester airport. It'll be 25c in Catania in the morning when I leave.

It's certainly a breathtaking view and we were lucky to get it. A ten minute window into spectacular.
