Hmm

West vows to seek to trigger Labour leadership contest

Labour MP Catherine West said she will seek to trigger a leadership contest if a cabinet minister does not launch a challenge to the prime minister by Monday.

West, previously a junior Foreign Office minister, said that if no leadership hopeful makes it known that the cabinet will seek to remove Keir Starmer, she will try to get the necessary signatures herself to trigger a leadership contest.

I don't get it. She wants to trigger a leadership contest without knowing whether anyone is ready to run?

Honestly, bloody Labour stabbing each other in the back. She is probably worried for her seat as Labour lost control of Haringey and of Barnet both of which cover her constituency.

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2026 18:17

If Starmer get replaced, I'd rather they would take time in finding a replacement than these knee jerk challenges

OP posts:
TemperanceWest · 09/05/2026 18:17

She also says:

“But my preferred option is for the Cabinet to do a reshuffle within itself, where there’s plenty of talent and for Keir to be given a different role, which he might enjoy, perhaps an international role, and then for others to come to the fore, who can communicate the message, who are very able, so we can have minimum fuss.”

So she wants Starmer to re-shuffle himself out of the PM role?

Absolutely. Do it properly and take the time needed.

PickAChew · 09/05/2026 18:23

It's this sort of sniping that crippled some long standing labour councils to the point of dysfunction.

It has all the hallmarks of a back of a beermat plan.

dontcallmelen · 09/05/2026 18:25

Wtf is she nuts, knee jerk response never ends well.

Are we sure this isn't Kemi Badenochs idea ?

DuncinToffee · 09/05/2026 18:27

Stalking horse, anyone knows what that means before I google it?

OP posts:
TemperanceWest · 09/05/2026 18:27

It is absolutely stupid

Let the dust settle. Let some of the hideous things we know about newly elected Reform councillors get a good airing etc. Then go for it in a sensible manner.

But no, let's have chaos.

dontcallmelen · 09/05/2026 18:38

Sorry I can’t remember who posted about the opposing circumstances of those who appear to be attracted by Reform, I know this is second hand information my dd was at a dinner/dance type function for the rotary club last night, she was really taken aback by the very vocal support of reform & the disappointment at the results in the borough a lot of these people are extremely comfortable really not short of a few Bob, so maybe it is the thought of deregulation the C currency & taxation etc
And to top it off the “entertainment” was a supposed comedian dressed up as Margaret Thatcher telling unfunny stories of her life, dd said the whole night was surreal the only saving grace was the food was very good.

Reports that Reform councillors in Ipswich have been instructed to only speak to GB News and ignore requests from local media.

This seems a new policy to avoid any kind of scrutiny. They tried to do the same on Nottinghamshire County Council.

Sadly for them all meetings are open to the public so they’re giving the local press license to print what they like without right to reply. Idiots.

cardibach · 09/05/2026 18:46

Hmmm.

SerendipityJane · 09/05/2026 18:46

So here's how Brum fell out.

Conservative: 16
Green Party: 19
Reform UK: 22
Labour and Co-operative Party: 1
Labour: 16
Liberal Democrats: 12
Independent: 13

now because "AI" can do some things ...

minimal winning coalitions:

  1. Conservative + Green Party + Reform UK = 57
  2. Conservative + Green Party + Labour = 51
  3. Conservative + Reform UK + Labour = 54
  4. Conservative + Reform UK + Liberal Democrats = 50
  5. Conservative + Reform UK + Independent = 51
  6. Green Party + Reform UK + Labour = 57
  7. Green Party + Reform UK + Liberal Democrats = 53
  8. Green Party + Reform UK + Independent = 54
  9. Reform UK + Labour + Liberal Democrats = 50
  10. Reform UK + Labour + Independent = 51
  11. Conservative + Green Party + Labour and Co-operative Party + Liberal Democrats + Independent = 61
  12. Conservative + Labour + Labour and Co-operative Party + Liberal Democrats + Independent = 58
  13. Green Party + Labour + Labour and Co-operative Party + Liberal Democrats + Independent = 61

DB ,made an interesting point from his secret US bunker 😀

Until now, as a whole, the UK couldn't confirm across the whole country quite how the reform support would flow. Which made tactical voting very hard. Certain the "Stop reform" website was completely silent for all the wards in Brum.

Now there is hard data (or will be when the full results are published) Reform are much more susceptible to tactical voting.

Quote how a 30 month hiatus until the next General Election affects that is as yet undetermined.

I’m not sure how the rest turned out but my tactical vote said Labour and Green won. My daughter’s was LD and stayed that way, but unlikely to change anyway despite an obnoxious huge St George flag across from that house.

Well yes. But it highlights that it’s a stupid challenge whichever way you look at it.

BIossomtoes · 09/05/2026 19:01

Well my intuition - vote Tory - failed We now have a right pair of reformers (in more than one way).

However when the breakdown shows what went wrong, the next vote will be far more efficient.

In the meantime, is anyone willing to speculate on whether Brum can secure a permanent coalition ?

All my life I have been bullied relentlessly that FPTP is the only way to deliver stability.

I am owed a fucktonne of apologies. In fact I may not have room for them all, as I am still collecting apologies from the people who insisted having a Monarch was how Britain was safe from destructive politicians who spy for the Russians and can't be trusted to obey their own laws.

Some info on line said that Sir Keir Starmer sacked Catherine West last year?

Yup. She lost a government post. Sour grapes and selfishness.
