Evening everybody. Have been to vote at tea time a the polling station was very busy!
I often struggle for DC/ CC councillors ( unlike town) as I live in what was a traditional blues shire.
We have recently gone fairly yellow BUT the LD councillors are literally throwing us under a bus as far as LGR is concerned and looking at their seats county wide😏
Interesting that I had a door knock to check I had voted and it was the LD. They are concerned about the turquoise dicks- I understand that. It has been the absolute shitshow on the local FB of hate Greens v Reform are wankers type of posts.
Results will be interesting here.

PickAChew · 07/05/2026 22:29

I'll mostly be looking over the borders to see if the contagion has spread. Hartlepool is counting tonight, apparently. I fully expect them to go turquoise. Gateshead and Sunderland likely to be done by 4pm, tomorrow. I reckon Sunderland will go turquoise, too.

Of course, crafty wank has been telling people that the vote is about Gaza. Hmm

LittleBowSheep · 07/05/2026 22:54

Voted earlier this morning. Voted Plaid, but I don't think that will surprise anyone.

Vote early and vote often 😀

SerendipityJane · 07/05/2026 23:13

Just checked our front door, and was amused to find a leaflet from the conservative candidates, saying it's not too late to vote.

I can't fault hem for engagement at this stage. It's a shame they couldn't have put 1% of that effort into dealing with my local authority issues.

TemperanceWest · 08/05/2026 07:02

Morning all!

It is barely 7am, only a few councils have returned results (Reform has won loads of seats 😡but hasn't won control of any councils so far ☺️) and MN is already a bunfight on several threads. I swear some people still think this is a GE.

TemperanceWest · 08/05/2026 07:12

Oops. I tell a lie, Reform has won Newcastle-under-Lyme.

PickAChew · 08/05/2026 07:28

Morning. Reform won all 12 seats up for grabs in Hartlepool leaving it with NOC.

Unsurprising. I was horrified by the state it was in the last time I went there and my dad would have cried at what it’s become. I had a discussion with my cousin about the despair people feel and the lack of any hope.

Zonder · 08/05/2026 07:41

I don't think I can bear to watch any news today. I need to avoid any smug sightings of Garage for my own wellbeing.

He must be in a quandary. One the one hand he will be dying to do a big, triumphant press conference. On the other hand that risks questions about the £5m.

TemperanceWest · 08/05/2026 07:47

Lib Dems seem to been doing OK. They currently have more councils (5) than any other party apart from Labour (10).

No surprises so far, divided left vote. right vote goes reform. Tories?

They haven't started counting our council yet

BIWI · 08/05/2026 08:12

Thankfully we remained Labour - and actually gained 2 councillors, up to 32. Lib Dems in second place (by quite a bit, although they also gained 1) and Tories lost 3 so now only have 4. Reform just over 800 votes, so no councillors - hurrah!

I love it up that way - and Sunderland/Durham - I only visit now and again though my Dad came from there.

It is however heavily deprived in parts - I stayed in Seaham last time and was told that whilst a lot of funding had improved the beach/front end it still had issues and people were still angry.

Maybe the anger Farage whips up gives them a connection of frustration followed by a belief he will help them?

However, I did park any idea of moving that way - fingers still crossed for my city - I may feel physically homeless rather than the normal political homeless folk feel on MN!

Aye, the town centre is an absolute shell. Bus services are terrible and it's just so run down.

I think we're going to see the same everywhere the Southport riots were at their worst. It's telling that one of the new councillors in Hartlepool said that they were probably voted for because they're not politicians.

It's the element of the left vote that has gone to Reform that I find most worrying though.
Pleased to hear your results have bucked the trend BIWI.

Woohoo - I’m pleased LDs are doing fairly ok - I think perhaps some still revert to recognised longer standing parties at times rather than newer ones?

BIossomtoes · 08/05/2026 08:24

Good news @BIWI. I’m intrigued to see what happens here.

Durham city is a Libdem (and green) island in the wider county. I see a lot of sneering (eg. fucking students, swaying the vote, living in our houses) and even suggestions that we're always the first to have potholes fixed.

Southampton

Southampton is also interesting for where the gains were.

Reform gain in the wealthier and poorer areas.

Greens gain in the city and student areas.

Labour held in the poorest and most diverse ward (Bevois) and a ward I can't explain yet (Bitterne Park), which I thought would be Green/Reform.

Interesting. Perhaps the individual councillors were popular- that counted a lot for my vote in times past.

I am, probably unreasonably, more baffled and annoyed at wealthy areas - just self, self, self and nasty folk.

I’ve been watching BBC adaptation of Lord of the Flies with my grandson - interesting and still relevant - and goddam scary too!

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2026 08:42

I don't know, Reform is more a party for the wealthy than for the poorer, so it makes sense.

Students will be next to be 'punished' after immigrants.
