Should I apologise to my previous hairdresser and ask to return?

I fell out with my hairdrer because I thought I had reacted to her hair dye. It wasn't the hair dye, it was shingles. The hairdresser was upset and got rid of me. I went somewhere else and the new hairdresser coloured it too dark and I dont like it. I showed her a photo of what it looked like from the previous salon and she said she couldn't tell the colour as it was a photo. She kept insisting my hair was dark brown so I need dark brown dye. When I went to my previous salon I had had it coloured elsewhere and I was told it was too dark so she lightened it slightly and I was pleased with it. Now I've gone back to the too dark shade at the new salon.

I want to return to my previous salon to show them how dark it is and get their opinion and im sure they will agree that it's too dark.

All I can do is call and apologise and hope the hairdresser will take me back. The new salon is more expensive and £30 more for a colour and blow dry. The only good thing is the new salon is 15 minutes walk from home whereas the pre house salon is a 15 minute journey by public transport and then a 10 minute ute walk to the salon

Don’t you just show them the colour that YOU want?

Ive never heard of a salon having a waiting list. Most salons are only too glad to accept someone because it's the client paying the salon for whatever they have done and that means money for tge salon which can only be a good thing. Besides, you have to accept a client first and then find out if you want them to continue. My friends brother is a hairdresser and he has accepted ever person who has ever phoned him for an appointment and before anyone says go to him, I can't because he has retired

I’m just talking as my experience as a hairdresser, we have a waiting list and wouldn’t want the hassle

I don’t understand how someone can cause you to have a reaction to something? It’s your own immune system detecting substances that it thinks is a threat. So even it was a reaction in the first it’s nobody’s fault?

When i thought i had reacted i went to a salon and told them what happened and wanted some advice. They said every salon must patch test you every 6 months because you can still react. I said is that what you do and they said yes. I went back and said I believe you should patch test ne every 6 months. The stylist said I tested you when you first came and you were fine so I said but you can still react years later. The stylist said I only test once and that's all thats needed and so I left it at that. I went back to the salon who tests every 6 months and told them she didn't think resting every 6 months was necessary and they said sge is wrong of course it is necessary and we would never dream of tsting a client only once.

Anyway im going out in a bit and out of curiosity I will ask a salon to look at the colour and tell me if they think it's too dark. Other than that I hope it fades after a few washes

My point is, an allergic reaction happens because of your own body. So maybe rephrase your wording.

but as others have pointed out, maybe just stick to box dye because it seems like you complain about everything

Forty85 · 25/04/2026 10:24

My daughters a hairdresser and you sound like an absolute nightmare client. Going to another salon then going back and asking them to fix the mess up then going back to another salon again and expecting the original hairdresser to fix it. You have no loyalty and it's actually offensive the way you are behaving by going elsewhere then wanting them to fix their mistakes but they weren't good enough to keep going to. Hopefully they will tell you to get fucked.

PerkyOchrePeer · 25/04/2026 10:24

Yes, many reputable salons recommend a patch test every 3 to 6 months to ensure safety, as skin sensitivity and allergy status can change over time.

Found this online which means if a salon isn't doing this they are not following professional guidelines

pinkdelight · 25/04/2026 10:26

Seriously, do you know ANYONE who gets a patch test done every 6 months? Course not. We get our hair dyed and it's fine 99.9% of the time. Yours was even fine on that occasion so a patch test was neither here nor there. To go to another salon then go back to the first telling them what they should have done and then going back and forth like you did plus the groundless accusations shows someone who has way too much time on their hands for stirring up needless drama.

If you believe this, why would you want to go back?

Sure they recommend it to cover their arses if the worst happens, but guidelines aren't rules and in the real world no one has the time for ongoing pointless patch tests.

MudRitual · 25/04/2026 10:30

@PerkyOchrePeer, hairdressers are busy on Saturdays. They’re not going to stop doing their own clients’ hair to get into some kind of pissing contest about whether a different salon dyed your hair the wrong colour when you’re not their client.

Personally, I would not take back a former client I’d barred because they wanted to close me diwn because they thought their attack of shingles was a dye reaction due to my patch test procedures.

My hairdresser has a waiting list as she’s so good. You do sound a bit of a nightmare to be honest. Did you outright accuse them of burning your scalp or mention it? And even if you had reacted to the dye, if it had been used numerous times then it wouldn’t have been the hairdressers fault

Error404FucksNotFound · 25/04/2026 10:47

Have you got any friends/ family / coworkers / acquaintances whose hair you love? If so then ask them who they go to.

MississippiCroc · 25/04/2026 10:47

Regardless of how often they should or shouldn’t be patch testing you, how on earth is it the hairdressers fault if you had had a reaction? Why would you fall out over it?

UnderactiveUnderachiever · 25/04/2026 10:48

OP practically every single poster here has told you that you either are a nightmare or you sound like one.
You have never addressed this.

Do you ever wonder to yourself - because you do have serious form for falling out with pretty much everyone - whether you are the problem?

She didn't have a reaction. It was shingles which is probably why she's having a fit of the conniptions now. Nobody to pin the blame on!

GinaandGin · 25/04/2026 10:52

I know she didn’t!! I said ‘if’.

But at the time she thought she had. I can’t work out why it would have been the hairdressers fault even if it was. Other than the OP clearly likes arguing with everyone….

The 1st may not take you back but you should still apologise as its the right hing to do and may make you feel better.

Kidsrold · 25/04/2026 11:00

When you thought you had reacted to the salon’s dye, what did you do? This is kind of key in this story.

MississippiCroc · 25/04/2026 11:03

Of course they won’t take you back, because they can pick and choose clients. If you’re going to be rude and objectionable why would they have you? I’m sure they have enough clients on their books.

There is at least one previous thread in this, plus several simultaneous ones on how her GP’s surgery were also totally inadequate in diagnosing and treating her, ditto 111, and one about how bad her friends were for not enquiring about her health. @PerkyOchrePeer would start a fight in an empty room.

Lurkingandlearning · 25/04/2026 11:07

When you complained to your previous hairdresser you since realised you'd made a mistake. I can see how you might have thought you'd had a reaction to the hair dye rather than realising you had shingles.

Were you aggressive and rude when you complained? If you were, then I think you need to find a third hairdresser and make it very clear what you want. The last time I had my hair coloured they had a board / book with swatches of fake hair of all the different colours. If they have one of those, it will avoid the uncertainty that comes with using photos.

If you were polite despite needing to complain, I would go back to the first hairdresser with a bunch of flowers and explain that you hadn't realised that you actually had shingles.

She might have the good grace to take you back as a client but I think that would've been more likely had you gone back to her once you knew it was shingles rather than going to a different salon.

Well they did abd hair does lighten after a few washes

This is a good point. Have you washed it yet?

I wouldn't go back to salon 1 tbh, you didn't treat them very well. Maybe think about that going forwards?

You should have apologised as soon as you realised it was shingles. You are being insincere now as you are only apologising so they’ll take you back, not because you were in the wrong. This is a life lesson for you, if you want people to be kind and reasonable to you, you also need to be kind and reasonable.
